Guilt, seriousness, murder and... laughter (EN/ES)

I'll tell you about the movie, but I won't really tell you. What follows will feel like spoilers, a teaser, and yet you'll still watch it. Because the actors are brilliant, because you'll laugh despite the intense drama, and because...

These two are hitmen. Harry and Ken. The first is the boss.

And this one below is Ray, a rookie in the trade.

They're in Bruges because of the rookie's botched job. If you don't know where Bruges is, don't Google it – let the movie surprise you. And boy, will it. It’s a very beautiful city. Here’s a little sneak peek. Look:

The boss is in London, but due to his criminal code, there's one thing he won't tolerate:

But things don’t go Harry’s way. Which, though deadly serious, ends up being hilarious.

So he decides to resolve the conflict himself. Meaning, he travels to Bruges to carry out the sentence he himself passed. But he encounters several surprises. The last one is the most extraordinary.

Meanwhile, the rookie feels incredibly guilty about the botched job.

Despite this, he decides to take a chance on love. In his own way, of course:

However, he’ll have to run. And it results in one of the funniest chases I’ve ever seen in cinema. Criminal black humor of the finest kind. Especially because there’s a pregnant woman involved.

There’s also a dwarf. His name’s Jimmy.

He’s as funny as Tyrion Lannister because he argues with Ray about a war between dwarf races. He plays a crucial role in the plot.

In case you want a brief summary for your notes, the context and main roles would look something like this, based on internal conflicts:

Purgatory/Underworld: I believe the city, Bruges, acts as a medieval limbo or purgatory where the characters face their sins and judgment. Similar to descents into the underworld in various myths.

I’ll also share two anecdotes:

There's a sequence where Ray argues with a Canadian and his girlfriend in a restaurant, and after several shenanigans, ends with Ray drinking in a bar. The sequence took many takes. Colin Farrell, drinking real beer (not prop beer) each time, ended up consuming the equivalent of 40 shots of beer during filming. Reportedly, he was quite affected by the end of the day.

Martin McDonagh conceived the character of the dwarf actor Jimmy after seeing actor Jordan Prentice at a party. Prentice, who actually has achondroplasia, was wearing a stylish tuxedo. The image of this small, well-dressed man captivated McDonagh and became the initial spark for creating the eccentric, philosophical character who ends up being crucial to the plot.

So there you have it. If you like humor combined with criminal suspense, this black comedy isn't just great – it's one of the enormous masterpieces of the genre. And my personal favorite. The dialogues and facial expressions are a delight. I hope you enjoy it.

Ah, I almost forgot. The movie is titled In Bruges and it's from 2008. Who plays the leads? Ray (Colin Farrell), Ken (Brendan Gleeson), Harry (Ralph Fiennes).

Culpa, seriedad, asesinatos y... carcajadas

Te cuento la película, pero no te la cuento. Lo que sigue te parecerá spoilers, adelanto, y aun así la vas a ver. Porque los actores son geniales, porque te vas a reír pese al drama intenso y porque…
Ellos dos son asesinos profesionales. Harry y Ken. El primero es el jefe.

Y este de abajo es Ray, un novato en el oficio.

Están en Brujas debido a una chapucería del novato. Si no sabes dónde queda Brujas, no lo googlees para que la peli te sorprenda. Y bastante. Es una ciudad muy bella. Te doy un pequeño adelanto. Mira:

El jefe está en Londres, pero debido a su código criminal, hay algo que no tolera:

Pero las cosas no le salen a Harry como quiere. Lo cual, aunque es muy serio, resulta muy cómico.

Y decide a resolver el conflicto por su cuenta. O sea, viaja a Brujas para cumplir la sentencia que él mismo dictó. Pero se encuentra varias sorpresas. La del final es la más extraordinaria.

Por su parte, el novato se siente bien culpable por la chapucería

Pese a ello, decide apostar por el amor. A su manera, claro:

Sin embargo, tendrá que huir. Pero resulta una de las persecuciones más graciosas que he visto en el cine. Humor negro y criminal del más fino. Sobre todo porque hay una embarazada de por medio.

También hay un enano. Se llama Jimmy.

Es tan divertido como Tyrion Lannister porque discute con Ray sobre una guerra entre razas de enanos. Desempeña un papel crucial en la trama.
Por si te interesa un breve resumen para tus apuntes, el contexto y los papeles protagónicos quedarían más o menos así, según los conflictos internos:

Hay una secuencia donde Ray discute con un canadiense y su novia en un restaurante, y después de varias locuras, termina con Ray bebiendo en un bar. La secuencia tuvo muchas tomas. Colin Farrell, bebiendo cerveza real (no de utilería) en cada toma, terminó consumiendo el equivalente a 40 chupitos de cerveza durante el rodaje de esa secuencia. Según los informes, estuvo bastante afectado al final del día.

Martin McDonagh concibió el personaje del enano actor Jimmy después de ver al actor Jordan Prentice en una fiesta. Prentice, que realmente es un actor con acondroplasia, estaba en la fiesta usando un elegante esmoquin. La imagen de este hombre pequeño y bien vestido cautivó a McDonagh y se convirtió en la chispa inicial para crear el personaje excéntrico y filosófico que termina siendo crucial para la trama.

Pues ahí lo tienes. Si te gusta el humor combinado con el suspenso criminal, esta comedia negra no es de las grandes, sino de las enormes obras maestras del género. Y mi preferida. Los diálogos y las expresiones faciales son una delicia. Ojalá te guste.
