They Will Kill You (2026)
Is it horror, comedy, or a simple blood festival? There are movies that move along that thin line without breaking a sweat, and They Will Kill You (2026), by director Kirill Sokolov, is the perfect example. I had my eye on it since its release, and now that it has finally landed on HBO, I was able to see if it lived up to the hype promised in its trailer. The verdict? A brutal black comedy where the slasher elements overflow with action and a pace designed to grab your attention until the very last moment.
¿Es terror, comedia o un simple festival de sangre? Hay películas que se mueven en esa delgada línea sin despeinarse, y Te van a matar (2026), del director Kirill Sokolov, es el ejemplo perfecto. Le tenía el ojo echado desde su estreno, y ahora que por fin ha aterrizado en HBO, he podido comprobar si cumplía con el subidón que prometía su tráiler. ¿El veredicto? Una comedia negra brutal donde el slasher derrocha acción con un ritmo diseñado para atrapar tu atención hasta el último momento.
Let's be honest... it's not your typical horror movie looking to give you a jump scare. Not at all. Its strength lies in a mischievous, rogue tone taken to such an absurd extreme that it generates a genuine cognitive dissonance. With bloody choreographies that at times will remind you of John Wick or the legendary scene of The Bride against the 88 Maniacs in Kill Bill, you will end up laughing no matter what while the screen drips liters of blood.
Vamos a ser sinceros... no es la típica película de terror que busca darte un susto. Para nada. Su fuerte es un tono gamberro llevado a un extremo tan absurdo que te genera una auténtica disonancia cognitiva. Con unas coreografías sangrientas que por momentos te recordarán a John Wick o a la mítica escena de La Novia contra los 88 Maníacos en Kill Bill, vas a terminar riéndote sí o sí mientras la pantalla chorrea litros de sangre.
This madness works because the film unashamedly embraces the identity of gore cinema, becoming a crystal-clear tribute to cartoon humor (in the purest hyper-violent slapstick style) that we already enjoyed in cult works like the original Evil Dead saga. Under this premise, the plot delivers without straying too far from survival genre clichés. But if the machinery works, it is largely thanks to its protagonist, Asia; a fantastic Zazie Beetz who knows perfectly how to transit between that cartoonish comedy and the physical heroine that a movie like this needs.
Esta locura funciona porque la cinta abraza sin complejos la identidad del cine gore, convirtiéndose en un clarísimo homenaje al humor de dibujo animado (al más puro estilo slapstick hiperviolento) que ya disfrutamos en obras de culto como la saga original de Evil Dead. Bajo esta premisa, la trama cumple sin salirse demasiado de los clichés del género survival. Pero si la maquinaria funciona, es en gran parte gracias a su protagonista, Asia; una Zazie Beetz fantástica que sabe transitar a la perfección entre esa comedia caricaturesca y la heroína física que una película así necesita.
It is a total spectacle to see her crush the cultists of El Vigil, an elite apartment building that hides a temple to Satan. A trap from which there is no escape, full of passageways and tunnels where the most disadvantaged are sacrificed by its tenants to an entity that controls their lives. A demon that is even too legal to break its own pacts. And watch out, because the visual aspect of this species of final boss is something I didn't expect at all and managed to surprise me completely.
Es todo un espectáculo verla machacar a los sectarios de El Vigil, un elitista edificio de apartamentos que esconde un templo a Satán. Una trampa de la que no se puede escapar, llena de pasadizos y túneles donde los más desfavorecidos son sacrificados por sus inquilinos a una entidad que controla sus vidas. Un demonio que es incluso demasiado legal como para romper sus propios pactos. Y ojo, porque el aspecto visual de esta especie de jefe final es algo que no me esperaba para nada y consiguió sorprenderme por completo.
I don't want to tell you much more so as not to spoil the surprises, whether the twists are predictable or not, of a very fun and highly recommended film that has managed to rightfully crown itself in the Top 10 of HBO Max, placing itself even ahead of recent major genre phenomena such as The Substance. Without a doubt, horror releases are giving all genre lovers a summer of fear.
I leave you with a quote that is difficult to forget and invites reflection; the classic quote with which this frenetic story decides to start and which is a declaration of intent long before even stepping on the accelerator:
"When the poor give to the rich, the devil laughs."
No quiero deciros mucho más para no arruinaros las sorpresas, tenga giros previsibles o no, de una película muy divertida y recomendable que ha conseguido coronarse con razón en el Top 10 de HBO Max, situándose incluso por delante de grandes fenómenos recientes del género como La sustancia. Sin duda, los estrenos de terror nos están regalando un verano de miedo a todos los amantes del género.
Os dejo con una frase difícil de olvidar y que invita a la reflexión; la cita clásica con la que esta frenética historia decide arrancar y que es una declaración de intenciones mucho antes incluso de pisar el acelerador:
«Cuando los pobres dan a los ricos, el diablo se ríe».
I remember wanting to watch this in theatres, but never finding it showing anywhere. Definitely gonna check this out though...
