When the past comes calling, and a bloody one at that, you either yield to it or fight. I think this just about summarises the recent pirate action film featuring one of my favourite actresses, Priyanka Chopra Jonas. Ever since she starred as Alex Parrish in thriller series Quantico, I've always loved her in action movies. She's one actress I'd happily cast in an action-packed movie like this, especially since she gets to play the badass saviour.

Written by Frank E. Flowers and Joe Ballarini, and also directed by Fowers, The Bluff (2026) is a pirate action thriller that truly thrills, and packs in adrenaline pumping action from start to finish.

In this movie, Ercell (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) is a mother with a dangerous past. She lives quietly on a Caribbean island with her disabled son and sister-in-law when a bounty hunter pirate, Captain Connor (Karl Urban) and his fearsome crew bombards them. This pirate doesn't come alone. He holds Ercell’s husband, T.H. Bodden (Ismael Cruz Cordova), hostage and quickly places the island under siege.

The residents run into a church for cover while some of the men fight the pirates and lose their lives in the process. Connor's men rush to Ercell's house and get into a bloody fight with her. She hides her son under a trapdoor. The men demand a stash of marked gold bars supposedly belonging to Connor from many years ago.

In this siege, as Ercell's past comes to light, she must fight to save herself, family and the island from Connor and his dangerous crew. Can Ercell hide her past from her family? Who does the stash of gold bars rightfully belong to? Can she save her family from a murderous pirate captain and his crew hell bent on revenge?

My Review And Rating

It's been a while since I watched a pirate movie and The Bluff satisfies this craving. I didn't expect it to be this action-packed and they didn't disappoint. The plot is great, the kind that pulls you in with curiosity and you are left wondering whether Ercell is truly dark and dangerous as painted by Connor and her crew.

I love that director Frank Flowers gives us a morally grey lead character—Ercell aka bloody Mary. You would expect, as portrayed in most movies, that the protagonist is good and clean and as such, must win at the end. In this movie, Ercell is painted as this dangerous slave rescued by pirates. She joins them, fights, kills, steals and does all the bad things pirates are known for. When Connor returns for ‘his’ gold bars, he tries to make her family see the ‘bad’ person Ercell once was. Instead, this admirable protagonist admits to her past but fights for her present and future.

The storytelling is well done and the action sequences are gripping. From the opening scene to the final credit, there isn't a dull moment. The focus is more on the action and includes guns, knives and sword fights. There are few scenes that attempt to be emotional but they don't quite land for me. Maybe because I don't like the actor who plays the role of Ercell's husband.

The acting is good in my opinion. I know Priyanka Jonas often works with a stunt double and they do great together. She doesn't have much to say in this movie because the fight scenes take up most of her acting. Karl Urban as always is good at villainous roles and performs well in this one. His anger and attraction towards Jonas' character is so convincing.

The cinematography is good but could have been better. Due to the action sequences, some scenes are a bit shaky and unfocused. Still, I'll say Flowers did okay with this movie. I know some viewers might feel squeamish watching this but it's a story about pirates, gold, greed and survival. Some gore is expected in this kind of movie. There are scenes where blood hits the camera lens. The director and cast do not shy away from the grit. The fight scenes are dirty and brutal, and Jonas plays her part very well.

Rating this series, I will give it 6.5 stars out 10 mainly for the action scenes and the cast's performance. The unfocused scenes distracted me in some parts but overall, I really enjoyed this movie. Have you seen this movie? Let me know your thoughts.
