The Final Goodbye? Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025) || Movie Review

The Mission impossible franchise is one of the best action films of all time, which will still be remembered by the majority of people who enjoyed the franchise. I almost thought this franchise would never come to an end seeing that more sequels were being produced.
However, the final sequel is here and it is a wrap up. The question now is; did it end well? Was it a satisfactory wrap up for the avid fans and viewers? Was it really a final good bye? Perhaps maybe in the next 3 years there will be another sequel.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is an action spy film directed by Christopher McQuarrie from a screenplay which was co-written with Erik Jendresen. This sequel is the final installment in the franchise. It was distributed by Paramount Pictures and it starred Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny and Angela Bassett.

The plot of this movie picked off right from the last installment in the franchise where Ethan Hunt, the IMF agent had already retrieved the key to the source code for the artificial intelligence aka, ”The Entity”.

However, after the retrieval, Ethan goes into hiding but somehow he receives a cryptic and self destructive message from the US President Erika Sloane. She informs him that he needs to surrender the key to the government as ”The Entity” now have control over almost all the global nuclear systems.

On the other hand, Ethan had other plans to go after Gabriel, the Entity's former proxy who ”The Entity” had cut all forms of communication because he failed to steal the key from the last installment. Apart from pursuing Gabriel, Ethan and his IMF colleague Benji went to see Luther who is sick in his off the grid underground lab where he had finished developing a ”poison pill” meant to attack and kill ”The Entity”. Will Ethan succeed with his solo plan? Who will try and stop him? Will ”The Entity” eventually find what Ethan is up to? What part does the US president play in this whole end of the world mishap?
My Review And Rating.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning was a fantastic and a controversial final installment of this the Mission Impossible franchise. This last sequel stood out for me because of the underwater scenes (which gave me serious anxiety) while I was watching it. For me, this sequel is good but it was not the deserving final goodbye. In the end I feel like it still wasn't a good bye.
Despite the fact that this sequel didn't have the deserved ending, I still appreciate some things in this installment that were amazing. The choreography and stunts were thrilling, good pacing, all the stunts were arranged, and the underwater scenes were explicitly and wildly shot. All the action scenes were shot with the intention of eliciting some high tension from the viewers. I enjoyed them all.
Let's talk about the writing and the plot. In this sequel, the writer of the plot / storyline ran out of words right immediately in the first act. As I was watching the movie, I discovered that the entire screenplay was filled with repetitions from the first act. Dialogues were repeated seriously some many times by different characters at different scenes. It became weak and the poor writing became quite obvious. This alone should have thrown away many viewers but I suspect like me, the action stunts kept them going and they also pushed through to the end to see the final ending/goodbye.
Let's talk about the cast and the world building. For me, The Entity is not really an interest/ a worthy villain. The Entity as a character was not really explored. I felt like the writer didn't properly flesh out The Entity. We didn't witness any economical melt nor technical melt down, it was all focused on global Internet melt down and Nuclear war heads.
However, the cast were so good that some percentage of the viewers would not recognise how poorly the plot was written and how bad the repetition of dialogue was. But then, I was impressed with Angela Bassett performing as the POTUS. She was amazing, fantastic and earned her spotlight. She carried her role like she was made for it.
Rating this movie, I will give it 6 out of 10. It was a good and thrilling watch but it was not the final ending this franchise deserved.
