Movie Review: Doctor Sleep / Doctor sueño (ENG/ESP)
Hello everyone! Today I bring you a recommendation of a horror movie that I really liked. "Doctor Sleep" is a movie based on the book of the great writer Stephen King that bears the same name and, compared to him, I found it very well achieved. This book is the second part of another one called “The Shining”, of which there is also a movie. It tells the history of Dani Torrance, the child protagonist of the previous movie, when he is older. It gives the history a different and interesting twist, totally original, and you don't need to see the previous one to understand it.

Relata la historia de Dani Torrance, el niño protagonista de la anterior película, cuando es mayor. Le da a la historia un giro diferente e interesante, totalmente original, y no hace falta que veas la anterior para entenderla.

“Doctor Sleep” is a 2019 American supernatural horror film written and directed by Mike Flanagan. Dani, now an alcoholic adult with no fixed abode, lives haunted by the ghosts of her childhood. When a group of people with similar abilities begin to be murdered, Dani is forced to confront her past and fight against a group of people looking to exploit her abilities.
“Doctor Sueño” es una película de terror sobrenatural estadounidense de 2019 escrita y dirigida por Mike Flanagan. Dani, ahora un adulto alcohólico y sin residencia fija, vive atormentado por los fantasmas de su infancia. My opinion/Mi opinión
This movie hooks you from the first moment and if you have seen “The Shining” it will bring to mind several of its most beloved characters and others not so much, as it follows the history of all the survivors of that nightmare that happened in the Overlook Hotel. I thought it was fantastic and, compared to the book, very well adapted, as it is not always so. Ideal for lovers of horror and suspense, and for King fans.
Esta película te super engancha desde el primer momento y si has visto “El resplandor” te traerá a la mente varios de sus personajes más queridos y otros que no tanto, ya que sigue la historia de todos los supervivientes de aquella pesadilla acontecida en el Hotel Overlook. Me pareció fantástica y, en comparación con el libro, muy bien adaptada, ya que no siempre es así. Ideal para los amantes del terror y el suspenso, y para los fanáticos de King.
As we begin we see that Dani as an adult has inherited much from his father, he has become an alcoholic who is unable to hold down a steady job and his gift has all but disappeared because of this. Many of the inner demons that were born in his traumatic childhood manifest themselves in his addictions. When he hits rock bottom he will be forced to rethink his entire life.
Al comenzar vemos que Dani ya adulto ha heredado mucho de su padre, se ha convertido en un alcohólico que no es capaz de mantener un trabajo fijo y su don ha casi desaparecido debido a esto. Mucho de los demonios internos que nacieron en su traumática niñez se manifiestan en sus adicciones. Cuando esta toca fondo se verá obligado a replantear toda su vida.
Flanagan, the director, described The Shining as "very much about addiction, which is doom. It's about annihilation and the destruction of a family," while Doctor Sleep referred to "recovery," stating, "In the way that addiction feels like doom and annihilation, recovery is rebirth, and recovery is salvation, in a way."

As Dani begins to try to recover, she slowly regains her mental powers and it is then that she will have to face the “real” demons of her past. At the same time she contacts a girl, Abra, who also has the splendor and whose life is in grave danger. This is the first unexpected twist that is followed by a bunch more.
Cuando Dani comienza a tratar de recuperarse, muy de a poco recupera sus poderes mentales y es entonces cuando tendrá que enfrentar los demonios “reales” de su pasado. Al mismo tiempo contacta con una niña, Abra, que también tiene el esplendor y cuya vida corre grave peligro. Este es el primer giro inesperado al que le siguen un montón más.
The most interesting thing about this film is that it is not simply a continuation of “The Shining” but, in a very macabre twist typical of King, we see a group of people who feed on the splendor of people like him in a sadistic and cruel way. This gives the history a totally different path, one that doesn't lag behind the first but brings it to a spectacular and unexpected close. So you won't have to see the first one to understand the second one, it is very well explained by the brilliant use of flashbacks.
Lo más interesante de esta película es que no es simplemente una continuación de “El Resplandor” si no que, con un giro muy macabro de los típicos de King, vemos a un grupo de gente que se alimenta del esplendor de personas como él de una manera sádica y cruel. Esto le da a la historia un camino totalmente diferente, que no se queda atrás en cuanto a la primera sino que le aporta un cierre espectacular e inesperado. Por lo que no tendrás que ver la primera para entender la segunda, está muy bien explicada por el uso genial de los flashbacks.

Tengo que revisitarla, me gustó mucho como mezclaba los elementos visuales de la adaptación de Kubrick de the shinning con los elementos de la novela de Doctor Sleep, aparte, siempre es bueno ver a Ewan McGregor, actorazo.
A mí también me gustó mucho esa mezcla, realmente me pareció una genialidad y muy bien lograda. No necesitás ver la primera para entender la segunda.
I watched the Shining only recently in the last couple of years and liked it especially the atmoshere around it. Haven't gotten to see Doctor Sleep yet and I'm also not really drawn to it but seeing how good reviews it get I maybe should give it a try some day.
