Synopsis/Sinopsis
The Substance is a horror/science fiction film directed, written, and co-produced by Coralie Fargeat. It stars Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quaid. The plot follows the history of Elisabeth Sparkle, a star of an aerobics program, who is fired because of her age and decides to resort to a mysterious substance that promises beauty and youth.
La sustancia es una película de terror y ciencia ficción dirigida, escrita y coproducida por Coralie Fargeat. Está protagonizada por Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley y Dennis Quaid. I found this film extremely disturbing, to the point that viewers will either love it or hate it; there is no middle ground. It explores the themes of fame, beauty, and youth in a society that values appearance above all else, in an extreme and harsh way. It will give you the chills, and I'm not lying. At first, I thought it was just weird, but as the minutes go by, it causes a physical reaction of disgust.
Esta película me resultó sumamente perturbadora al punto de que el espectador puede amarla u odiarla, no hay términos medios. Es que explora el tema de la fama, la belleza y la juventud, en una sociedad que valora la apariencia sobre todo lo demás, de una forma extrema y dura. Te dará escalofríos y no miento. Al principio pensé que era rara pero nada más y mientras van pasando los minutos te causa hasta una reacción física de repugnancia.
Youth and beauty are themes that have been explored, criticized, and debated many times in cinema, but this film manages to give them a new and disturbing twist that you won't forget. The images are impressive and go from perfect to grotesque in a second. The director shows how the entertainment industry and society have twisted to the point of extreme cruelty towards aging women. And that social pressure puts the protagonist in an extreme position where she will resort to a clandestine treatment involving a substance as mysterious as it is dangerous.
La juventud y la belleza, temas super explorados, criticados y puesto en debate muchas veces en el cine, sin embargo esta película logró darle un nuevo giro perturbador que no se te va a olvidar. Las imágenes son impresionantes y pasa de lo perfecto a lo grotesco en un segundo. La directora muestra cómo la industria del entretenimiento y la sociedad se ha se ha retorcido al punto máximo de la crueldad con las mujeres que envejecen. Y esa presión social pone a la protagonista en una posición extrema donde recurrirá a un tratamiento clandestino que involucra una sustancia tan misteriosa y como peligrosa.
The Substance promises youth and beauty, but it comes with rules and a price that no one expects. The experiment is successful, and we see two versions of the protagonist: one younger and one older. Everything goes well at first, but things start to go wrong when the younger, perfect version of Elisabeth breaks the rules, causing devastating consequences for her older self, and everything spirals out of control. La Sustancia promete juventud y belleza, pero tiene reglas y un precio que nadie espera. El experimento sale bien, vemos dos versiones de la protagonista: una más joven y otra más adulta. Todo sale bien al principio, sin embargo comienza a torcerse cuando la versión más joven y perfecta de Elisabeth rompe esas reglas, causando consecuencias devastadoras para su versión más adulta y todo se sale de control.
