500 DAYS OFF SUMMER - WHO WAS RIGHT? [ENG-ESP]

It would be the year 2009, and long before the rise and hegemony of Marvel there was a movie that divided many people, Team Cap? Team Iron Man? Bullshit, none of it compares to the dilemma presented in the movie 500 Days of Summer, a romantic comedy directed by Marc Webb, starring Zooey Deschannel and Joseph Gordon-Levit. I was lucky enough to see it when it premiered and I confess that I had mixed feelings, however I did not find a considerable balance when making or making a judgment about the motivations of the characters. So to refresh the memory of many, I will comment a little as an introduction who the characters are and what the story is about.

Coirría el año 2009, y mucho antes del aúge y hegemonía de Marvel hubo una película que dividió a muchas personas, Team Cap? Team Iron Man? Patrañas, nada de eso se compara al dilema presentado en la película 500 Days of Summer, una comedia romántica dirigida por Marc Webb, protagonizada por Zooey Deschannel y Joseph Gordon-Levit. Tuve la suerte de verla cuando se estrenó y confieso que tuve sentimientos encontrados, sin embargo no encontraba un equilibrio considerable al momento de hacer o emitir un juicio sobre las motivaciones de los personajes. Así que para refrescar la memoria de muchos, comentaré un poco a forma de introducción quienes son los personajes y de que va la historia.

Tom, a very idealistic young man, I think too much, in a small retrospective of his childhood it is revealed to us that he grew up in the warmth of a loving family and very influenced by cinema, specifically a misinterpretation of the film The Graduate, this idealism leads him to turn everything that happens to her into a kind of idyllic fantasy where everything is pink and smells of jasmine. This kind of escape from reality leads him to keep a mediocre job, completely forgetting to pursue a dream or goal. The movie begins when he is in full mourning for the breakup so looking for advice from his friends he tries to see the past to find out what he did wrong.

Tom, un joven muy idealista, creo que demasiado, en una pequeña retrospectiva de su infancia se nos revela que creció bajo el calor de una familia cariñosa y muy influenciado por el cine, específicamente una malinterpretación de la película El Graduado, este idealismo lo lleva a convertir todo lo que le sucede en una especie de fantasía idílica donde todo es color rosas y olor jazmín. Esta especie de evasión de la realidad le lleva a conservar un empleo mediocre olvidándose por completo de perseguir algún sueño o meta. La película comienza cuando él esta en pleno duelo por el rompimiento así que buscando consejos de sus amigos trata de ver al pasado para descubrir que fue lo que hizo mal.

Summer, is in many ways the opposite, when we talk about her childhood her story is the opposite of Tom's, Summer faced the divorce of her parents at a very young age, this fact determined her in a large part of what what she thought her life would be. Summer complements Tom's idealism with a cynicism about relationships, we could say that Summer is a person who sees reality, although the latter is a very broad word, after all human beings are islands and to survive we build bridges.

Summer, es en muchos aspectos todo lo contrario, cuando se nos habla acerca de su infancia su historia es lo opuesto a la de Tom, Summer afrontó el divorcio de sus padres a muy temprana edad, este hecho la detereminó en una gran parte de lo que ella creyó que sería su vida. Summer complementa el idealismo de Tom con un cinismo sobre las relaciones de parejas, podríamos decir que Summer es una persona que ve la realidad, aunque esta última sea una palabra muy amplia, después de todos los seres humanos somos islas y para sobrevivir tendemos puentes.

Days after meeting at the company they hold a small party for employees in a bar, here an interesting conversation takes place between Tom, Summer and one of Tom's friends, each one exposes their arguments about love and relationships. Summer expresses in a courteous and relaxed way that she does not believe in love, that relationships are only to get hurt, for her it is better to have a good time without belonging to something official, Tom on the contrary manifests some discomfort with his words and expresses his ideas very idealistically. At this point, everything is clear between the two of them, each one defended his point with an appropriate speech, but history will show us that sometimes words are carried away by the wind. Despite what Tom says about love, Summer begins an approach and they begin a relationship of "more than friends" and Tomo does nothing but succumb to the frenzy he feels, he has forgotten Summer's words and has given free rein he lets go of his idylls, he feels that she is the realization of everything he believes to be wonderful in love.

Días después de conocerse en la empresa realizan una pequeña fiesta para empleados en un bar, aquí se da una interesante conversación entre Tom, Summer y uno de los amigos de Tom, exponen cada uno sus argumentos acerca del amor y las relaciones de pareja. Summer expresa de una manera cortés y relajada que no cree en el amor, que las relaciones son solo para salir lastimados, para ella es mejor pasarla bien sin pertenecer a algo oficial, Tom por el contrario manifiesta cierta incomodidad con sus palabras y expresa sus ideas de forma muy idealista. En este punto para mi queda todo claro entre ambos, cad auno defendió su punto con un discurso adecuado, pero la historia nos mostrará que a veces las palabras se las lleva el viento. A pesar de lo que Tom dice sobre el amor, Summer inicia un acercamiento e inician una relación de "mas que amigos" y Tomo no hace más que sucumbir frente al frenesí que siente, se ha olvidado de las palabras de Summer y ha dado rienda suelta a sus idilios, siente que ella es la realización de todo lo que cree maravilloso en el amor.

There were things that I found funny in the film, like the musical references, they were always there, like The Smiths, I think the lyrics of the song announced how one of them was going to end. But what amused me the most were Tom's hallucinations, the boy really believed he was in a romantic novel, so much so that when he went out he felt he was in a Broadway musical, now sharing with Summer made him idealize every aspect of her personality to the point of declaring that everything about her was perfect. This reminds me of the words of the philosopher Ortega y Gasett when he said that falling in love is a state of mind where one sees things as they are not, and it is that love acts that way. But the story tells us everything from Tom's point of view, we never meet the real Summer, what we see of her is through her eye deceived by fantasies. So, we can get an idea of ​​what will happen to Summer's image when all this sweet story comes to an end.

Hubo cosas que en la película me parecieron graciosas, como las referencias musicales, estas siempre estuvieron ahí presente, como The Smiths, creo que la letra de la canción anunciaba como iba a terminar uno de ellos dos. Pero lo que más gracia me causaba eran las alucinaciones de Tom, realmente el chico creía que estaba en una novela romántica, tanto que al salir a la calle sentía que estaba en un musical de Broadway, el compartir ahora con Summer le hacía idealizar cada aspecto de su personalidad al punto de declarar que todo en ella era perfecto. Esto me hace recordar las palabras del filósofo Ortega y Gasett cuando dijo que el enamoramiento es un estado mental donde uno ve las cosas como no son, y es que el amor actúa de esa manera. Pero la historia nos cuenta todo desde el punto de vista de Tom, nunca conocemos a la verdadera Summer, lo que de ella vemos a es a través de su ojo engañado por fantasías. Así que, podemos hacernos una idea de que pasará con la imagen de Summer cuando toda esta dulce historia llegue a su fin.

The Beginning of the End: Tom never saw the signs that everything was wrong because he never paid attention to Summer, always lived in his own fantasy and somehow undid Summer's words. But as we always see things from his point of view, this detail is easy to overlook, it is Tom who tells us what she is like, how he met her, everything they lived together and how she moved away from him. It is Tom's world, that color of roses that was now just thorns. Seeking help from his friends among them, they make him understand some things, however, he cannot fully understand how Summer abandoned him, his hatred is so great that now instead of Seeing things as they really are fills him with resentment, and what he once loved about Summer now repels him.

El principio del fin: Tom nunca vió las señales de que todo iba mal porque nunca prestó atención a Summer, siempre vivió en su propia fantasía y de alguna manera deshizo las palabras de Summer. Pero como siempre vemos las cosas desde su punto de vista este detalle es facil pasarlo por alto, es Tom quien nos cuenta como es ella, como la conoció, todo lo que vivieron juntos y como ella se alejó de él. Es el mundo de Tom, ese color de rosas que ahora era solo espinas, Buscando ayuda de sus amigos entre ellos le hacen entender algunas cosas, sin embargo del todo no logra comprender como Summer lo abandona, es tanto su odio que ahora en lugar de ver las cosas como son realmente, se llena de resentimiento, y lo que antes adoraba de Summer ahora le provoca repulsión.

Towards the end he has a very interesting dialogue because I think it's the first time that Tom really listens to Summer. He replies that she always said she didn't want a commitment and now she was married to someone else, he asks her how did all that happen? And she emphatically answers him that she saw in that boy what she never saw in Tom. That left him deeply moved inside, the first time he hears from Summer and receives the truth he never wanted to see or hear.

Hacia el final tiene un diálogo muy interesante porque a mi parecer es la primera vez que Tom escucha de verdad a Summer. Él le replica que ella siempre decia no querer un compromiso y ahora estaba casada con otro, él le pregunta cómo paso todo eso? Y ella de forma tajante le responde que, vió en ese chico lo que nunca vio en Tom. Eso lo dejó profundamente conmovido por dentro, la primera vez que escucha a Summer y recibe la verdad que nunca quiso ver ni atender.

I prefer Tom's sister's phrase: "Just because a girl likes the same weird things as you, doesn't mean she's your soul mate!". And it's part of what helps me understand that it was Tom who had the problem, when the movie was released, in those years for the public, Summer was a bitch who took advantage of Tom, but when you think about it, Tom always had a lot of problems. mistakes that he was never willing to correct, he had it in his hands to show Summer that what she thought and believed about love was wrong and that what happened to her parents should not have to happen to her. But Tom was trapped in his own bubble from which he was never willing to leave, although in my opinion this does not release Summer from any responsibility, since she also ignored Tom's words when he had implied that he wanted a formal relationship, through her charms she made Tom not focus on that, so our dear good boy did not fall into the mistake by himself.

Yo me quedo con la frase de la hermana de Tom: "Que a una chica le gusten las mismas cosas raras que a ti, no significa que sea tu alma gemela!". Y es parte de lo que me ayuda a comprender que quien tuvo el problema fue Tom, cuando se estrenó la película, en aquellos años para el público Summer fue una perra que se a provechó de Tom, pero analizando bien las cosas Tom siempre tuvo muchos errores que nunca estuvo dispuesto a corregir, él tuvo en sus manos poder mostrarle a Summer que lo que pensaba y creía del amor estaba errado y que lo que sucedió a sus padres no tendría que sucederle a ella. Pero Tom quedó atrapado en su propia burbuja de la cual nunca estuvo dispuesto a salir, aunque esto tampoco a mi parecer libra a Summer de alguna responsabilidad, ya que ella también pasó por alto las palabras de Tom cuando este había dado a entender que quería una relación formal, ella a través de sus encantos hacía que Tom no se enfocara en eso, así que nuestro querido chico bueno no cayó en el error él solo.

I can say about Tom that he was always a simp who only dedicated himself to idealizing a girl as if she were the only one in the world, after suffering he realized that there are many in the world. Another criticism is that he never had ambitions, he was always satisfied with his work, and only at the end, after suffering, is where he takes his profession seriously, not being focused on his project led him to consider that a person could be the reason for his happiness and that in real life is not that way, whoever sees it like this ends up suffering and with a broken heart. Lastly, my only criticism of Summer is that like many girls, she always had a contradiction between what she said she believed and what her facts reflected, if she only wanted sex, she should never have given Tom much hope, in the end she also turned out to be a victim of her own cynicism, she ended up married and did not know how it all happened. The poet and writing Oscar Wilde once mentioned that if you want to know what a woman thinks you should only look at her and not listen to her, this principle applies to Summer, and as a metaphor a lot of girls.

Para finalizar yo solo tengo algunas cosas en contra de Tom, y no tantas contra Summer. De Tom puedo decir que siempre fue un simp que solo se dedico a idealizar a una chica como si fuera la única en el mundo, luego de sufrir se dio cuenta que en el mundo hay muchas. Otra crítica es que él nunca tuvo ambiciones, siempre se conformó con su trabajo, y recien al final, luego de sufrir es donde se toma su profesión en serio, el no estar enfocado en su proyecto le llevó a considerar que una persona puede ser la razón de su felicidad y eso en la vida real no es de esa manera, quien lo ve así termina sufriendo y con el corazón hecho pedazos. Por último mi única crítica a Summer es que como muchas chicas, ella siempre tuvo una contradicción entre lo que decía creer y lo que sus hechos reflejaban, si ella quería solamente sexo, jamás debió darle muchas ilusiones a Tom, al final ella también resultó ser una víctima de su porpio cinismo, terminó casada y no supo como sucedió todo. El poeta y escrito Oscar Wilde mencionó una vez, que si uno quier saber lo que una mujer piensa solo debe mirarla y no escucharla, este principio se aplica a Summer, y como metáfora una gran cantidad de chicas.

Team Tom? or Team Summer? I think there was neither a villain nor a hero, I only saw two people conditioned by the environment in which they grew up but they realized that one thing is the conditions in which you grew up and then there is what you do when you are an adult. Team Tom? o Team Summer? yo creo que no hubo ni un villano ni un héroe, solo vi a dos personas condicionadas por el ambiente en el que crecieron pero se dieron cuenta que una cosa son las condiciones en las que creciste y luego esta lo que haces cuando ya eres adulto. Culpar al pasado de los errores del presente es una actitud inmadura, los errores son para aprender y mejorar y lo que hagan otras personas no tiene por qué afectarnos para siempre, eso lo decidimos nosotros. Así que no hay Team para mi al cual apoyar. Y para ti?
