{ENG-ESP] PREDATOR: FROM ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE - DEPREDADOR: DESDE OTRA PERSPECTIVA
Hello dear friends, I hope that this new year has started very well, this will be my first publication of this 2022 since I had a long time without talking about cinema. On this occasion I want to make a brief reflective analysis of the cult sci-fi film: Predator, from 1987. I really am not into watching current movies, I have been deeply disappointed in the decline of Hollywood cinema, I see few films and before doing it I investigate very well what it is about. That's why I prefer to look at the classics and continue enjoying the good stories, they are so good that for some reason the trend now is to destroy the classics with horrible remakes, that speaks a lot about the deplorable state in which the writers are today. My analysis is based on a literary approach called psychoanalytic, as a literature teacher I like to do that kind of analysis to works of art, and to speak of my point I will use the ideas of Carl Jung and the collective unconscious as a guide.
Hola queridos amigos, espero que este nuevo año hayan comenzado muy bien, esta será mi primera publicación de este 2022 ya que tenía mucho tiempo sin hablar de cine. En esta ocación quiero hacer un breve análisis reflexivo de la palícula de culto de ciencia ficción: Depredador, del año 1987. Realmente no soy de ver peliculas actuales, he estado profundamente decepcionado de la decadencia del cine de Hollywood, veo pocas películas y antes de hacerlo investigo muy bien de qué se trata. Por eso prefiero mirar hacia los clásicos y seguir disfrutando de las buenas historias, son tan buenas que por alguna razón la tendencia ahora es destruir los clásicos con remakes espantosos, eso habla mucho del estado deplorable en el que se encuentran los guionistas de hoy. Mi análisis se basa en un enfoque literario llamado psicoanalítico, como profesor de literatura me gusta hacer esa clase de análisis a las obras de arte, y para hablar de mi punto utilizaré un poco las ideas de Carl Jung y el insconciente colectivo como guía.
Most people know the story and plot of this movie so I won't go into those details too much, but it is about a military special forces team entrusted with a rescue mission in a tropical jungle, all warriors one. one of them is exterminated by a force that comes from outer space and only one of them survives. When I was in my childhood I watched this movie with terror and amazement, then as time went by that feeling did not change and on the contrary more sensations were added. Once, having more information and culture, I began to see in this film many interesting socio-political features, and apart from these traits I seemed to see in it a heroic story like those of the oral tradition in the beginnings of culture and civilization. Only that the elements change but the narrative is the same: The hero, a path, the test and in the end the victory.
La mayoría de las personas conoce la historia y la trama de esta película así que no abundaré mucho en esos detalles, pero se trata de un equipo militar de fuerzas especiales que se le encomienda una misión de rescate en una jungla tropical, todos los guerreros uno a uno son exterminados por una fuerza que proviene del espacio exterior y solo uno de ellos sobrevive. Cuando estaba en mi infancia veía esta película con terror y asombro, luego con el pasar del tiempo ese sentimiento no iba cambiando y al contrario se iban agregando mas sensaciones. Una vez al tener mas información y cultura comencé a ver en esta películas muchos rasgos sociopolíticos interesantes, y a parte de estos ragos me pareció ver en ella un relato heróico como los de la tradición oral en los inicios de la cultura y civilización. Solamente que los elementos cambian pero la narrativa es la misma: El héroe, un camino, la prueba y al final la victoria.
Let's think about the characters, the film shows us the team led by Major Ducth, an experienced fighter in wars in countries like Libya, Afghanistan and Vietnam, as well as all his companions. When I observe the participation of the group in the film, their performance is so good that they make me think that they really are an elite team, so the fact that they are exterminated without being able to do anything leaves me more impressed. I also like to see this team as a single individual and each character represents one character. The Psychiatrist Carl Jung spoke of the figure of the Archetype in the Collective Unconscious, a figure that repeats in all cultures and that symbolizes the virtues to which a people aspires. So I can see in Major Dutch a representation of the Jungian Hero Archetype, and his companions as archetypal manifestations of the hero. Dutch represents heroism, Billy's character of Indian descent represents a degree of intuition and harmony. Dillon represents the complete opposite of Billy, he represents instrumental reason, for whom the end justifies the means, he was the one who put the team on that mission using deceptions, once under the threat of the Predator he is the only one who does not want to accept that something else Beyond their beliefs it is hunting them. On the contrary, Billy with his intuition is able to see beyond, and what he perceives makes him feel the true terror and he is the first to admit that everyone is going to die.
Pensemos en los personajes, la película nos muestra al equipo liderado por mayor Ducth, experimentado combatiente en guerras en países como Libia, Afganistan y Vietnan, del mismo modo todos sus compañeros. Cuando observo la participación del grupo en la película su actuación es tan buena que me hacen pensar que de verdad son un equipo de élite, por lo que el hecho de como son exterminados sin poder hacer nada me deja más impresionado. Tambien me gusta ver a este equipo como un solo individuo y cada personaje representa un caracter. El Psiquiatra Carl Jung habló de la figura del Arquetipo en el Inconsciente Colectivo, una figura que repite en todas las culturas y que simboliza las virtudes a las que un pueblo aspira. Entonces, yo puedo ver en el Mayor Dutch una representación del Arquetipo del héroe del Jung, y a sus compañeros como manifestaciones arquetípicas del héroe. Dutch representa el heroísmo, el personaje de Billy de ascendencia indígena representa un grado de intuición y armonía. Dillon representa todo lo contrario a Billy, representa la razón instrumental, para quien el fin justifica los medios, fue el quién metió al equipo en esa misión utilizando engaños, una vez bajo la amenaza del Depredador es el único que no quiere aceptar que algo más allá de sus creencias los está cazando. Por el contrario Billy con su intuición es capaz de ver más allá, y lo que percibe lo hace sentir el verdadero terror y es el primero en admitir que todos van a morir.
Now let's think about the antagonist, one of the details that I do not like about the film is that at the beginning you see the Predator ship and as it is thrown to planet Earth, I would have preferred the scene of the helicopter only and thus think that it was a action film. In the scenes we can see how this creature is always observing from very close in the trees, studying its prey very well, analyzing its behavior and aggressiveness. The predator can symbolize many things such as: the fear of death, the unstoppable force of nature or the fear of the dark. But studying the theories of Carl Jung, the predator could very well symbolize The Shadow, in Jung's psychology the human psyche is made up of 4 traits: the person, the shadow, the anima and the being. The Shadow according to Jung is composed of repressed ideas and unpleasant experiences for the individual, such as weaknesses, defects, instincts and traumatic experiences, in short, everything bad is hidden in the archetype of the Shadow. This argument has been widely used in the cinema, and it is to overcome our greatest fear to evolve and become better people. The predator then represents the deepest fear of the heroic man, the life force that destroys and crushes without mercy.
Ahora pensemos en el antagonista, uno de los detalles que no me gusta de la película es que al inicio se ve la nave del Depredador y como es arrojado al planeta Tierra, hubiera preferido la escena del helicoptero solamente y así pensar que se trataba de una pelicula de acción. En las escenas podemos ver como esta criatura esta observando siempre desde muy cerca en los árboles, estudiando muy bien a sus presas, analizando su comportamiento y su agresividad. El depredador puede simbolizar muchas cosas como: el miedo a la muerte, la fuerza imparable de la naturaleza o el miedo a la oscuridad. Pero estudiando las teorías de Carl Jung, el depredador podría simbolizar muy bien a La Sombra, en la psicología de Jung la psiquis humana se compone de 4 rasgos: la persona, la sombra, el ánima y el ser. La Sombra según Jung esta compuesta de ideas reprimidas y experiencias desagradables para el individuo, como debilidades, defectos, instintos y experiencias traumáticas, en pocas palabra, todo lo malo se esconde en el arquetipo de la Sombra. Este argumento ha sido muy utilizado en el cine, y es vencer nuestro mayor temor para evolucionar y transformarnos en mejores personas. El depredador entonces representa el temor más profundo del hombre heróico, la fuerza vital que destruye y aplasta sin misericordia
One thing that I always liked was the design of the Predator, and if I say that it symbolizes the Shadow it is because its origin seems to have come out of a nightmare. Stan Winston, the legendary designer of creatures like the Terminator, said James Cameron helped him with the design, giving him the idea for the sharp jaws. We have a warrior with a primitive aspect but with very advanced technology. The camouflage for me is what I liked the most, because it literally disappeared in plain sight. It could only be seen if he wanted to appear. Billy is the first to notice his presence even though he cannot see it, inside he knows that something awaits them, and Major Ducth corresponds to that sensation although on a lesser scale, being a western white man, his trust is more placed in his arms that in the intuition, he is an earthly man but Billy, although he is a military man, perceives something beyond reason.
Una cosa que siempre me gustó fue el diseño del Depredador, y si digo que simboliza la Sombra es porque su origen parece haber salido de una pesadilla. Stan Winston, el legendario diseñador de criaturas como Terminator, dijo que James Cameron lo ayudó con el diseño, dándole la idea de las mandíbulas afiladas. Tenemos un guerrero de aspecto primitivo pero con una tecnología muy avanzada. El camuflaje para mi es lo que más me gustó, porque literalmemte desaparecía a la vista de todos Solo podía verse si él deseaba aparecer. Billy es el primero en percatar su presencia aunque no pueda verlo, en su interior sabe que algo los espera, y el Mayor Ducth corresponde a esa sensación aunque en una menor escala, al ser un hombre blanco occidental, su confianza está mas puesta en sus armas que en la intuición, es un hombre terrenal pero Billy aunque es militar percibe algo más allá de la razón.
The problem posed by the stalking of the Predator breaks the opinions of the group immersed in an unconventional warlike situation. Dillon, the man who rationalizes everything, is the only one who does not want to accept the truth, and before this he self-suggests assuring that they are simple men who are stalking, but Ducth tells him that it is not like that, that he loves them all and that if not. face no one will survive. Carl Jung mentioned that the Shadow archetype represents the darker side of our nightmares and tomors, the denial of this nature will only make us project more of the Shadow in our lives, and sooner or later it will take the impulse of our behaviors and actions leading us to the disaster. This is what happens with Dillon, he does not accept reality and deceives himself to convince himself, the fear of death leads him to the path of denial and perdition. His death is great, because he chases the Predator and he appears before him, takes off his camouflage for a few seconds and shows who he is. The predator cuts his arm with its laser beam, the arm that he had clasped with Ducth at the beginning of the film and that represented his virility and confidence. The shadow destroyed his confidence and manhood and pierced his chest destroying his heart, a true reflection of what I mentioned earlier about what Carl Jung told us about the nature of the Shadow and the denial of the individual.
El problema que supone el asecho del Depredador quiebra las opiniones del grupo inmerso en una situación bélica no convencional. Dillon, el hombre que todo lo racionaliza es el único en no querer aceptar la verdad, y ante ello se autosugestiona asegurando que son simples hombres quienes estan asechando, pero Ducth le dice que no es así, que los quiere a todos y que si nolo enfrentan nadie sobrevivirá. Carl Jung mencionó que arquetipo de la Sombra representa el lado más oscuro de nuestras pesadillas y tomores, la negación de esta naturaleza solo hará que proyectemos más a la Sombra en nuestras vidas, y tarde o temprano tomará el impulso de nuestro comportamientos y acciones llevándonos al desastre. Esto es lo que sucede con Dillon, no acepta la realidad y se engaña a sí mismo para convencerse, el miedo a la muerte lo lleva al camino de la negación y la perdición. Su muerte es genial, porque persigue al Depredador y este se presenta ante él, se quita el camuflaje por unos segundos y muestra quien es. El depredador le corta el brazo con su rayo laser, el brazo que había estrechado con Ducth al inicio de la película y que representaba su virilidad y confianza. La sombra destruyó la confianza y la hombría y lo atravesó en el pecho destruyendo su corazón, fiel reflejo de lo que anteriormente mencioné acerca de lo que Carl Jung nos dijo sobre la naturaleza de la Sombra y la negación del individuo.

To his surprise he cannot see Dutch, the mud has hidden his body heat, the mud is a very interesting symbol, it has a religious connotation, if we read the genesis, God made man from the mud of the earth, also in the book From genesis, man made the Tower of Babel with baked clay, then we can perceive that this fight can be spiritual, or an indication that man must return to his origins, to his roots, to overcome this test. In Ducth's case, for, he could only see the beast when he was on an equal footing, the mud signifies the acceptance of the dark side, of the shadow. Carl Jung said repeatedly that what you deny submits you and what you accept liberates you. That is why I love this scene so much, it is so special, The man has seen into the abyss and now he knows how to face it.
Una vez el Depredador ha exterminado a todo el equipo se lanza a cazar al Mayor Dutch, cayendo este por una cascada, pensando que ha escapado llega a la orilla y descansa, pero pocos segundos despues escucha como cae algo al lago y sale de él unas pisadas espantodas, como la apariciónde un demonio salido del infierno que viene por tu alma. Ducth sin querer se llena el cuerpo con lodo y se esconde entre los juncos del río y logra apreciar con sus propios ojos al demonio cazador de hombres, la fuerza de la naturaleza, la Sombra de Jung. Para su sorpresa este no puede ver a Dutch, el lodo a ocultado su calor corporal, el lodo es un símbolo muy interesante, tiene una connotación religiosa, si leemos el génesis, Dios hizo al hombre del barro de la tierra, también en el libro de génesis el hombre hizo la Torre de Babel con barro cocido, entonces podemos percibir que esta lucha puede ser espiritual, o un indicio de que el hombre para vencer esta prueba debe volver a sus orígenes, a sus raíces. En el caso de Ducth, para, solo pudo ver a la bestia cuando estuvo en igualdad de condiciones, el lodo significa la aceptación del lado oscuro, de la sombra. Carl Jung dijo reiteradas ocaciones que lo que niegas te somete y lo que aceptas te libera. Por eso adoro tanto esta escena, es tan especial, El hombre a visto dentro del abismo y ahora sabe como enfrentarlo.
The final fight is simply apotheosis, we see Ducth transformed by the mud, there are no more weapons, now there is only cunning, intelligence and nature. Nature in conflict with civilized man is now the tool to fight the Shadow. Dutch prepares primitive traps, as if it were an indigenous person, that meant the mud with going back to the beginning, hunting to preserve your life and that of your spice. The Predator appears and Dutch with an arrow explodes the camouflage, now he can see it and attack it with all his weapons, he has taken the power from the Shadow, becoming one with the Shadow, participating in its same brutal and ruthless nature. Both lose their tools and the Predator, seeing the will to live that the human has, challenges him to a melee fight where Ducth loses, the force of terror is greater, the blows of darkness dominate the individual, but the appeal to him ancient, customs, roots makes him win. Sometimes the same thing happens in our struggles, we see how our surroundings succumb with us in the face of life's adversity, and there is nothing left but to learn from the old advice and the wise, the past experiences that gave us maturity, that is where we find the response for improvement and transformation.
La lucha final es simplemente apoteósica, vemos a Ducth transformado por el lodo, ya no hay armas, ahora solo hay astucia, inteligencia y la naturaleza. La naturaleza en conflicto con el hombre civilizado, ahora es la herramienta para luchar contra la Sombra. Dutch prepara trampas primitivas, como si de un indígena se tratara, eso quería decir el lodo con el volver a los inicios, cazar para preservar tu vida y la de tu especia. El Depredador aparece y Dutch conm una flecha hace estallar el camuflaje, ahora pued verlo y atacarlo con todas sus armas, le ha quitado el poder a la Sombra, haciéndose uno con la Sombra, participando de su misma naturaleza brutal y despiadada. Ambos pierden sus herramientas y el Depredador al ver la voluntad de vivir que tiene el humano lo reta a una pele cuerpo a cuerpo donde Ducth pierde, la fuerza del terror es mayor, los golpes de la oscuridad dominan al individuo, pero la apelación a lo antiguo, a las costumbres, a las raices lo hace salir vencedor. A veces en nuestras luchas sucede lo mismo, vemos como nuestro alrededor sucumbe con nosotros ante la adversidad de la vida, y no queda más que aprender de los viejos consejos y los sabios, las experiencias pasadas que nos dieron madurez, es ahí donde encontramos la respuesta para la superación y la transformación.
In the end we have a new man, broken and with traumatic experiences, with deep psychological consequences that will determine him for his future, but wiser. The final scene of Dutch in the helicopter staring out into the jungle, thinking about everything he faced is wonderful. It is the look we give to the past when we have passed a great test, all the suffering has served to grow and evolve and be new people. I like to think of this movie as the journey to a great trial, heroism shattered by an unknown force, but rebuilt stronger and on a more solid foundation.
Al final tenemos a un nuevo hombre, quebrado y con experiencias traumáticas, con secuelas psicológicas profundas que lo determinarán para su futuro, pero más sabio . La escena final de Dutch en el helicóptero con la mirada perdida hacia la selva, pensando en todo lo que enfrentó es maravillosa. Es la mirada que damos al pasdo cuando hemos superado una gran prueba, todo el sufrimiento ha servido para crecer y evolucionar y ser nuevas personas. Me gusta pensar en esta película como el viaje hacia una gran prueba, el heroísmo hecho pedazos por una fuerza desconocida, pero reconstruido más fuertes y con bases más sólidas.
Carl Jung was someone who studied the most hidden aspects of the mind better than anyone, and beyond the individual, he studied the effects they have on culture and civilization. For Jung, archetypes and symbols are repetitions of the same story, we inherit it in the same way that we inherit patterns of behavior and ignoring them can affect our lives. I highly recommend your book "Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious", it is an enriching analysis that will open your mind and understand things in a more comprehensive and different way. As a professor I like to do this kind of analysis and in the university there was no literary work that was in my hands to which I did these analyzes. Apart from the psychoanalytic approach, there is also the mythological approach, closely related to the first, and also the socio-historical, the latter helps us to understand the social and political framework that makes up a literary work and the moment in which it develops, helping to understand better the political discourse that underlies the depth of the text. So the cinema can be seen from this perspective.
Carl Jung fue alguien que estudió mejor que nadie los aspectos más ocultos de la mente, y más allá de lo individual, estudió los efectos que estos tienen en la cultura y la civlización. Para Jung los arquetipos y simbolos son repeticiones de la misma historia, la heredamos de la misma forma que heredamos patrones de conducta y el desconocerlos puede afectar nuestra vida. Recomiendo ampliamente su libro "Arquetipos y el Inconsciente Colectivo", es una análisis enriquecedor que les abrirá la mente y entenderán las cosas de una forma más integral y diferente. Como profesor me gusta hacer esta clase de análisis y en la universidad no hubo obra literaria que estuvo en mis manos a las que le hice estos análisis. Aparte del enfoque psicoanalítico tambien está el enfoque mitológico, muy emparentado con el primero, y también el socio-historico, este último nos ayuda a entender el entramado social y politico que conforma una obra literaria y el momento en que se desarrolla, ayudando a entender mejor el discurso político que subyace en lo prfundo del texto. Así pues al cine puede verse desde esta perspectiva.

Se puede concluir entonces que el film de Depredador puede ser analizado bajo una perspectiva psicoanálitica y encontrar una simbología rica en significados individuales y colectivos. Una producción de cine no escapa a estas apreciaciones, porque el discurso cinematográfico siempre es metafórico, el lenguaje metafórico es la clave del arte en general y en el colectivo compartimos símbolos que nos ayudan a entender. Algúna vez has visto una producción artística y te ha tocado el alma? te has sentido identificado? aún cuando la trama cuenta una historia diferente? A work is always located in a social context where ideologies, customs, values and behaviors are reproduced. In this way we better understand the cultural richness of a work. Está muy interesante su análisis. No llego a ese nivel, pero siempre me intrigo:
si solo ataca a guerreros armados, la solución lógica era arrojar las armas y no ser beligerante. El depredador no habría tenido interés en luchar con guerreros desarmados, es algo que no haría.

Es muy dificil que un soldado abandone su arma, y más tratándose de un equipo élite. Y eso es lo hermoso, que su valor es convertido en nada ante una amenaza abrumadora de la que no tienen idea. Todos estan desconcertados hasta que la chica revela que vio su sangre en las hojas, es ahí cuando Ducth lanza esa frase tan épica: "Si sangra, entonces podemos matarlo".. Dentro del análisis que hice, es una declaración de desafío a la Sombra.. Gracias por pasar, me agrada que te haya gustado.
