Streaming platforms are becoming more and more similar to the television we have consumed for years. And I often wonder if it is a good idea to pay for something that used to be free or cost much less than what today, for example, a subscription costs. But, something very strange happens to me and that is that while in traditional TV channels it was enough to change channels to watch some series, shows or movies, in platforms like Netflix or HBO Max, it would mean hiring a monthly subscription.

That's a problem, because while Netflix occasionally has a hit or two in its catalog, HBO Max, Disney+, Paramount, Star Plus or Prime Video, also do their own thing. There are good series on many platforms, but I'm always weighing the idea of whether or not it's worth the effort to sign up for a service where you're only going to watch a single series or movie.

I'm a fan of Rupaul's Drag Race; previously all seasons were available on Netflix, now Paramount+ has bought the streaming rights. The same thing happens to me with hundreds of productions that on a daily basis simply disappear from the catalog or even platforms that merge with others. This last case happened with Discovery Plus and HBO Max.

After the parent merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery, the content of both companies' platforms will become one. HBO Max will keep the name, but hundreds of shows, series and diverse content from the Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, TLC, Travel Channel, Magnolia Network, Food Network and Investigation Discovery will be gradually added.

I don't dislike having Discovery content, in fact, I love the idea. I love documentaries, true crime and other reality shows and special programs, so I take it for granted that our profiles on HBO Max will be complete, but it was a merger I didn't ask for. This merger comes with an increase in the subscription of what, by the way, is my favorite platform HBO Max.

Although they have not announced how much it will cost to access the platform's content, it has generated serious doubts in my mind. Starting because they have taken it upon themselves to delete hundreds of HBO original series, movies and shows. It is an uncertain thing for which there is no reasonable explanation, because it is fine to delete third-party content, but deleting original content?

On the other hand, there are the cancellations of movies, like Batgirl and even series like Westworld, which, even though it had declined in quality, HBO has never been known for leaving series half-finished. But, it all seems to be the fault of the "dirty" money. Already this year, staff cuts were announced, as well as the stoppage or freezing of Warner films such as Fantastic Beasts.

In this regard, and on the occasion of the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery, the company assured that they would seek to change the image of the platform with a different branding. But, I ask myself again, why change something that works as it does and does not need anything, the answer is still money. Both companies, and especially Warner, looked pretty bad after the merger.

This is the reason for the cutbacks, cancellations and elimination of content. They have even sought to give more priority to DC universe productions that will go straight to theaters and stop investing in "expensive" movies on video-on-demand services. Under this perspective it is hardly plausible to think that content will go down in quality and we will pay more.

Paying more is fashionable. Netflix, however, announced that they would be testing a new adjusted fee, which would include restrictions on quality and lots of advertising. The plan is that we pay less and their intentions are good, but with this they seek to eliminate shared profiles. They do not care about losing users, which in fact is already happening; right now, the important thing is that we consume advertising in a single profile and they have even announced retaliation against those who dare to share their screen.

These digital platforms have also copied the same television dynamic of broadcasting one episode a week and now they won't let us watch a series in marathon. It is much easier to upload one episode a week and make people talk about it on social networks, than to release all the episodes and after a week no one remembers the series. And I ask myself again, isn't this what we used to get from traditional television?

All this added to the fact that at the hottest moment of the streaming services war, these companies have decided to lower the quality of their productions, make us pay much more or make us endure advertising that we had already paid in advance not to watch. The strategy is simple, to oppress subscribers who stay and control them, make them pay more and provide them with poor quality content.

And that will be the moment when they lose millions of viewers and we turn our eyes to television, when they will decide to turn back. In the meantime, I'll keep looking for what series or movie to watch that is good and that I don't feel like I've wasted my time with. One of the hardest tasks to do, it has become lately.

I haven't subscribed to Neflix in a long time. Though for now, I opt for VIU, a streaming platform offering Asian and Middleastern films/cinema/drama. They release episode/week which made me anticipate something. If I want to watch film, I usually just get it on youtube film or google film and rent it. Maybe it's not cheaper but so far, it's more convenient to me. I don't think it's right to just simply delete the content right away before fully merging them, at least that's what I understood.
