A dog, a chef, and a second chance // Un perro, un chef y una segunda oportunidad

Watching videos on Web 2.0 social media, I saw a lot of recommendations for a film called Caramelo. It's a Brazilian production, and to be honest, I don't usually watch many foreign films, not because they're bad, but because many of them aren't my type or I don't connect with the story. But many content creators were recommending the film, even mentioning it as one of the best on Netflix this year. At first, I wasn't motivated, but after a while, I decided to give it a chance, and here's my opinion. As I always remind people, this is a personal review, not a professional critique, as I don't consider myself a professional in this field.

The film Caramelo was released in 2025, directed by filmmaker Diego Freitas, an adaptation of a story created by the director himself, who also participated in the screenplay alongside Rod Azevedo and Carolina Castro. The story tells us about Pedro, who loves cooking, works in an important restaurant, and dreams of becoming a chef, a dream he achieves, but then he receives news that changes everything, turning his life upside down. In this review, I don't want to give anything away, at least not any significant details, as I understand that many people don't like spoilers. Pedro takes in a dog, which he names Caramelo, who becomes his loyal friend, accompanying him through his worst moments and the most complicated situations he faces during the plot.

Chance encounters are the most notable aspect of the film, but this movie shows us that even the simplest encounters can have a huge impact on our lives. As you know, I love dogs. I even have three of them; they are part of my family, and I feel better when things aren't going well. I feel that they are a great support, they offer unconditional love, they will be there in the worst moments and they will never leave our side. This happened to Pedro with Caramelo. This young man found great support in this dog, who was a ray of light in his life when he thought everything was falling apart. Like other films about dogs and humans, this one shows us the great bond that can be achieved between the two.

Viendo vídeos por las redes sociales de la web 2.0, recomendaban mucho un filme llamado Caramelo. Este es una producción brasilera y la verdad no suelo ver muchas producciones, no por nada mala, sino que muchas no son mi tipo o no llego a conectar con la historia. Pero, me salían muchos creadores de contenidos recomendando la película, incluso la mencionaban como una de las mejores de Netflix de este año. Al inicio no me motivé, pero luego de un tiempo decidí darle una oportunidad y a continuación les voy a dar mi opinión. Como suelo recordar, esta es una reseña de una opinión personal, no una crítica profesional, pues no me considero un profesional en el tema

La película Caramelo se estrenó en este 2025, un filme dirigido por el cineasta Diego Freitas, una adaptación de una historia creada por el propio director, quien también participa en el guion junto a Rod Azevedo y Carolina Castro. La historia nos habla sobre Pedro, quien es amante de la cocina, trabajo en un restaurante importante y su sueño es convertirse en un chef, sueño que logra, pero este recibe una noticia que lo cambia todo, le da un vuelco a su vida. En esta reseña no quiero adelantar nada, al menos detalles significativos, pues entiendo que a muchos no les gustan los spoiler. Pedro recibe en su vida a un perro a la cual le pone Caramelo, quien se convierte en su amigo fiel, quien lo acompaña en sus peores momentos, en los procesos más complicados que se le presentaron durante la trama.

Los encuentros casuales son lo más noté del filme, pero esta película nos demuestra que incluso los encuentros más simples, pueden tener un gran impacto en nuestras vidas. Como saben me encantan los perros, incluso tengo tres, son parte de mi familia, me siento mejor cuando las cosas no marchan bien. Siento que son de un gran apoyo, brindan un amor incondicional, estarán en los peores momentos y nunca se irán de nuestro lado. Esto le ocurrió a Pedro con Caramelo, este joven encontró un gran apoyo en este perro, fue un brillo en su vida cuando pensó que todo se venía abajo. Al igual que otras películas de perros y humanos, esta nos demuestran el gran vínculo que se puede lograr entre ambos.

This film gives us a lot to think about. It's a dramatic production, but it also has its touch of humor, as Caramelo is a badly behaved dog and Pedro is a rather cheerful character. Caramelo was abandoned, something that happens a lot and something that bothers me greatly. I don't understand how people can throw animals out on the street. But this film also makes us realize that there are still good people in this world. My expectations for the film were low, despite the good reviews it had received, but I was pleasantly surprised by the plot. Something I wanted to tell you is that the dog in the film is an animal that the director found on the street, adopted, and trained for the production. I don't really know if this is true or not, I haven't confirmed it, but if it is, I think it's a great gesture and it gives more meaning to the story.

The film has its nostalgic moments, as well as cheerful and funny ones. I prefer the former, as drama is one of my favorite genres, especially the ending of the film. Obviously, I'm not going to spoil it for you, but I like that it didn't end like most of the films I've seen lately. Rafael Vitti brought Pedro to life, and I connected with his character. I thought his performance was very good. He knew how to show the different moods that we humans can experience, from sadness to joy, from fighting against adversity to finding support in our loved ones, even our pets. because we often think that having animals is a nuisance, but then we realize that the situation turns into a transformative friendship. Amendoim is the dog who brought Caramelo to life, a stray dog rescued by director Diego Freitas. We also have other supporting characters who are brought to life by good actors and actresses, so I thought the cast was a success.

Esta película nos da mucho para flexionar, una producción dramático, pero también tiene su toque de humor, pues Caramelo es perro mal portado y Pedro un personaje bastante alegre. Caramelo fue abandonado, algo que ocurre mucho y algo que me molesta mucho, no entiendo como las personas pueden tirar a la calle a los animales. Pero también con este filme nos damos cuenta de que aún quedan buenas personas en este mundo. Mis expectativas con el filme eran bajas, más allá de las buenas referencias que tenía y su trama me sorprendió para bien. Algo que quería contarles es que el perro de la película es un animal que el director encontró en la calle, lo adoptó y lo entrenó para producción. Realmente no sé si es cierto o no, no lo confirme, pero de ser así, me parece un gran gesto y le da más sentido a la historia.

La película tiene sus momentos nostálgicos, como también los alegres y divertidos. Me quedo más con lo primero, pues el género de drama es de mis preferidos y más con el final de filme. Obviamente, no se los voy a contar, pero me gusta que no terminé como la mayoría de los filmes que he visto últimamente. Rafael Vitti fue quien le dio vida a Pedro y conecté bastante con su personaje, su actuación me pareció muy buena, supo mostrar sus facetas en los diferentes momentos de ánimo que podemos pasar los seres humanos, de tristeza y alegra, de luchar contra las adversidades y de encontrar un apoyo en nuestros seres queridos, incluso nuestras mascotas, pues muchas veces creemos que es una molestia tener animales, pero luego nos damos cuenta de que la situación se convierte en una amistad transformadora. Amendoim es el perro que le dio vida a Caramelo, un perro callejero rescatado por el director Diego Freitas. También tenemos otros personajes secundarios que le dan vida buena actores y actrices, así que el reparto me pareció un acierto.

I thought the cinematography was very good. Kaue Zilli was in charge of it, and it shows us some beautiful places, with sequences of scenes that touch our souls. As I said, it also has its funny moments, but I was more impressed by the former. The soundtrack is also up to par, with emotional compositions for the saddest moments and others for the moments of humor that the film Caramelo wanted to convey. As I said, I didn't have high expectations, I don't consider it to be the best I've seen, but it was a good film, I connected with its story, a nice message, an ending that I liked, and cinematography and soundtrack that were up to par. Without a doubt, one of the best Netflix productions I've seen this year. Do I recommend the film? Honestly, yes, it's an entertaining film that's worth watching from beginning to end.

La fotografía del filme me pareció muy buena. La misma estuvo a cargo de Kaue Zilli y nos muestra lugares bastante hermosos, con secuencias de escenas que nos llega al alma y también como dije tiene sus momentos divertidos, pero me quedó más con lo anterior. La banda sonora también está al nivel, tiene composiciones emotivas para los momentos más tristes y otras para los momentos de humor que se le quiso dar a la película Caramelo. Como dije no tenía altas expectativas, no considero que sea de lo mejor que he visto, pero sí que fue una buena película, conecté con su historia, un bonito mensaje, un final que me gustó, una fotografía y banda sonora que estuvo a la altura. Si lugar a dudas de las mejores producciones de Netflix que he visto este año. ¿Recomiendo el filme? La verdad que sí, es una película entretenida y que vale la pena ver de principio a fin.
