Between verses and farewells: a year that changed everything [ENG-ESP]

A few days ago, I saw two reviews of a film that caught my attention. My Year in Oxford is a romantic drama with a touch of comedy. The film was released in 2025 and was directed by Iain Morris, with a screenplay written by a group of writers including Allison Burnett, Savion Einstein and Melissa Osborne, based on the novel by Julia Whelan. I must say that comedies are not my favourite films, but I do like romantic dramas, which is one of the main reasons why I decided to watch the film.

The entire story of this film takes place at one of the most prestigious universities in the United Kingdom, Oxford, where we meet Anna de la Vega, who travels from the United States to this institution to fulfil her dream of studying poetry. Anna is a very interesting character, a highly intelligent girl with considerable ambition. But, as always, life is never easy, and along the way she is faced with various decisions that are not at all easy to make, especially when you think you have your whole life planned out. Everything was going perfectly until Anna meets Jamie Davenport, a charming and mysterious poetry professor. They begin to form a bond, although at first it is nothing serious, but little by little it grows stronger, and the inevitable happens: the connection between these two is strong.

I have to say that at first I didn't have high expectations for the film; however, I watched it because I like the genre, but my initial interest wasn't as great as with other productions. The film surprised me in terms of the plot, a story that may be a cliché in others, two people who fall in love, but fate plays a dirty trick on them, they must decide whether to continue on their path, everything they planned to live in the moment. I am one of those who think that it is best to live whatever happens, because no matter how much we plan things, they often do not turn out the way we organise our future. A film that surprised me, without a doubt, was one that went from strength to strength, a plot with comedy that made me laugh several times. The latter is important, because often we are presented with stories that try to be funny, but this one is not, it succeeds all the time, but My Year at Oxford. This film is a perfect combination of romance, drama and comedy.

Hace unos días vi dos reseñas sobre una película que me llamó la atención. Mi año en Oxford es un filme del género de romance dramático con un toque de comedia. Esta película fue estrenó en este 2025, una producción dirigida por Iain Morris, con un guion que estuvo a cargo de un grupo de escritores integrados por Allison Burnett, Savion Einstein y Melissa Osborne, siendo una adaptación de la novela de Julia Whelan. Dedo decir que las comedias no son de mis filmes favoritos, pero los romances dramáticos sí que me agradan, siendo esta una de las razones principales por la cual me animé a ver la película.

Toda la historia de este filme se desarrolla en una de las universidades más prestigiosa del Reino Unido, Oxford, donde tenemos a Anna de la Vega, quien viaja de Estados Unidos hacia esa casa de estudio para cumplir su sueño de estudiar poesía. Anna es un personaje bastante interesante, una chica muy inteligente, con bastante ambiciones. Pero, como siempre, la vida nunca es fácil y en el camino se le presentan diversas decisiones que debe tomar, que no son para nada fácil y más cuando crees tener toda tu vida planeada. Todo iba perfecto hasta que Anna conoce a Jamie Davenport, un encantador y misterioso profesor de poesía. Estos comienzan a tener un vínculo, aunque al principio nada serie, pero poco a poco fue agarrando fuerza, llegando a suceder lo inevitable, que la conexión entre estos dos era fuerte.

Dedo decir que al principio no tenía tantas expectativas con el filme; sin embargo, lo vi porque el género me gusta, pero el interés al inicio no era tan grande como otras producciones. El filme me sorprendió en cuento a la trama refiere, una historia que tal vez en un cliché de otras, dos personas que se enamoran, pero el destino les juega una mala pasada, deben decidir si continuar su camino, todo lo que planearon a vivir el momento. Soy de los que piensan que lo mejor es vivir lo que tenga que suceder, pues por más que planeamos las cosas, muchas veces estos no se terminan dando tal cual organizamos nuestro futuro. Un filme que me sorprendió, sin lugar a dudas, fue de menos a más, una trama con comedio que me sacó varias risas. Esto último es importante, pues muchas veces nos presentan historia donde tratan de ser chistosos, pero esto no, todo el tiempo se logra, pero Mi año en Oxford. Esta película es una combinación perfecta de romance, drama y comedia.

The film may be a cliché, but if you like this type of plot, I think the story is good, not perfect, but it does the job, as it has beautiful moments, sad moments and several that bring a smile to your face. ‘Living fully in the present is more valuable than pursuing certainties.’ Without a doubt, this is the central message of the film: live life to the fullest, because no matter how much we plan things, life often surprises us. Another point is that My Year at Oxford shows us poetry as a way of life, because Anna is a very intelligent girl, but Jamie shows her that it's not enough to know the meaning of poetry, you have to live it. It's really a film that, beyond the repetitiveness of its story, has a great message and a well-executed plot, much better than expected.

Anna was played by Sofia Carson, while Jaime was brought to life by Corey Mylchreest. The story centres on these two characters, with Sofia and Corey doing a great job, as I noticed the connection between them from the start. It was clear where the plot was heading in terms of romance, although our male lead is somewhat mysterious, so the film ultimately fails to surprise. I thought the casting was very good, as was the work of filmmaker Iain Morris and how he told the story. The cinematography was another highlight of the film. I loved the sets, the locations where this story of love and drama unfolded, especially Oxford, as mentioned in the film's title. The soundtrack also plays its part in the plot, drawing us into the story at different moments.

Si la película no deja de ser un cliché, pero si te gusta este tipo de trama, creo que la historia es bueno, no perfecta, pero sí que cumple, pues tienen momentos bonitos, tristes y varios que sacan una sonrisa. “Vivir el presente con plenitud es más valioso que perseguir certezas” Sin lugar a dudas, este es el mensaje central del filme, vivir la vida a plenitud, pues por más que planeamos las cosas, esta nos suele sorprender. Otro punto es que Mi año en Oxford nos muestra la poesía como forma de vida, pues Anna es una chica muy inteligente, pero Jamie le muestra que no basta con saber el significado de la poesía, sino que hay que vivirla. Realmente un filme que, más allá de lo repetitivo de su historia, cuenta con un gran mensaje y una trama bien ejecutada, mucho mejor de lo esperado.

Anna fue interpretada por Sofia Carson, mientras que Jaime le dio vida Corey Mylchreest. La historia se centra en estos dos personajes, donde Sofía como Corey lograron un buen trabajo, pues note la conexión entre estos dos desde el principio, se notaba hacia donde iba dirigida la trama en cuanto al romance se refiere, aunque nuestro prota masculino es algo misterioso por lo que la película al final no llegará a sorprender. La selección del cast me pareció muy correcta, al igual que el trabajo del cineasta Iain Morris y como nos mostró la historia. La fotografía fue otro acierto del filme, me encantaron las escenografías, los lugares donde se desarrolló esta historia de amor y drama, sobre todo Oxford, tal cual nos menciona el título de la película. La banda sonora también cumple tu papel dentro de la trama, adentrarnos en la historia en los diferentes momentos.

My Year in Oxford is a film worth watching. Yes, it is a cliché, a story repeated from other films, but I was more impressed by the plot, the message it conveys, and the different moments we experience while watching the production. We go from seeing love, sad moments that bring tears to our eyes, and happy moments that make us smile. I think it's a well-made production. It could have been a little better at the end, but nothing that ruined the experience. I recommend you watch the film and let us know what you think.

Mi año en Oxford es una película que vale la pena verla. Sí que es un cliché, una historia repetida de otras películas, pero me quedó más con la trama, el mensaje que nos da y los diferentes momentos que pasamos al ver la producción. Pasamos de ver el amor, momentos tristes que nos sacan una película y momentos alegres que nos roban una sonrisa. Una producción que considero que fue bien lograda, puedo ser algo mejor para el final, nada que arruinara la experiencia. Les recomiendo que vean el filme y nos comenten que tal te pareció.
