CODA: Los sonidos del silencio // CODA: The Sounds of Silence

Friends of the community, I hope you are having a wonderful time with your loved ones. These December days are a time for reflection, rest, and taking a few days off to come back feeling refreshed. The best thing to do is watch a movie to take our minds off things, and in this case, I would like to share CODA: The Sounds of Silence, a 2021 film directed by Siân Heder, who also wrote the screenplay. What is most surprising about the great success of this film is the fact that it won the Oscar for Best Picture, the first time a production from a streaming platform (Apple TV+) has won this award. This production also won Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor.

The film tells the story of Ruby Rossi, who is part of a family where everyone is deaf except for her. This family is dedicated to fishing, and as the only member of the family who can speak and hear, she must keep an eye on the boat and all the details when they set sail to fish, as this is the family's only source of income. Ruby has a great talent for music, but she is unaware of this, as she usually sings and, being the only member with hearing, she did not know how beautifully she sang. At least this is what the story implies. The girl is a very noble character, always putting her family first, until she is presented with the opportunity to do what she loves most, which is singing, as well as being able to study.

In general, I can tell you that the film shows how Ruby must choose between her role as a family supporter and her desire for artistic independence. It's a rather complex decision, because following her dream would also mean no longer supporting her father, mother, and siblings as a sign language interpreter. As human beings, we always seek to find our own path, do what we love, and fulfill our dreams, but there are many obstacles along the way that we must overcome. The film CODA conveys different messages: family and responsibility, independence, and personal growth through music. It is a film with a great story, an adaptation worthy of the Oscars, and my favorite film in recent years. It is also important to mention that this production is a remake of a French film, La famille Bélier (2014).

Amigos de la comunidad, espero que estén pasando unos excelentes días en compañía de sus seres queridos. Estos días decembrinos sirven para reflexionar, para descansar, para tomarse unos días y volver mucho más renovados. Lo mejor es ver una película, para distraernos y en este caso les comparto CODA: Los sonidos del silencio, una película de 2021, dirigida por Siân Heder, quien también fue el encargado del guion. Lo que más sorprende del gran éxito de este filme es el hecho que se ganó el Óscar como mejor película, siendo la primera vez que una producción de una plataforma de streaming (Apple TV+) gana este galardón. Esta producción también se ganó el mejor guion adaptado y mejor actor de reparto.

La historia del filme nos habla de Ruby Rossi, quien forma parte de una familia donde todos son sordos, a excepción de la chica. Esta familia se dedica a la pesca, y al ser la única integrante de la familia que habla y escucha, debe estar pendiente de la embarcación, de todos los detalles cuando estos zarpan al mar para pescar, siendo esta la única entrada de dinero de la familia. Ruby tiene un gran talento para la música, pero esto lo desconoce, pues normalmente canta y como es la única integrante con audición, no conocía lo hermoso que cantaba. Al menos esto último es lo que se da a entender de la historia. La chica es un personaje bastante noble, siempre coloca su familia por delante, hasta que le presenta la oportunidad de hacer lo que más le gusta, que es el canto y además de poder estudiar.

En general les puedo decir que la película muestra cómo Ruby debe elegir entre su rol de apoyo familiar y su deseo de independencia artística. Una decisión bastante compleja, pues seguir su sueño significaría también dejar de apoyar a su padre, madre y hermanos con intérprete de señas. Como seres humanos siempre buscamos conseguir nuestro propio rumbo, hacer lo que nos gusta, cumplir nuestros sueños, pero en el camino se presentan muchos obstáculos, la cual debemos sortear. La película CODA nos muestra diferentes mensajes, la familia y la responsabilidad, la independencia, la superación personal a través de la música. Una película con una gran historia, una adaptación que está a la altura de los Premios Óscar, siendo mi favorita de los últimos años. También es importante mencionar que esta producción es un remake de una película francesa, La famille Bélier (2014).

One thing that really caught my attention is the fact that Ruby's father is played by Troy Kotsur, a deaf actor who, incidentally, won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, becoming the first person with hearing loss to win such a prestigious award. But he is not the only one, as Daniel Durant and Marlee Matlin, who play Ruby's brother and mother, also suffered hearing loss. Honestly, I think this was one of the film's greatest successes and gave the story great meaning, allowing us to connect more with what it was trying to convey. We also have the participation of Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez, who, as always, does a great job and adds a touch of comedy to his roles. On the other hand, Irish actor Ferdia Walsh-Peelo had another role in the story, although a little less significant than the others, but I liked his performance. The cast really couldn't have been better.

The cinematography for the film CODA was done by Paula Huidobro, a Latin American talent. Also Mexican, she presents us with warm visuals, with a very natural style that allowed me to connect with what I was watching. It is a very relatable film that conveys a lot of tenderness and can even bring tears to our eyes with its very moving scenes. What I liked most were the scenes of the sea and fishing, which show us the beauty of the sea and nature, as well as the hard work these people do in difficult conditions, but also how many people take advantage of them. As for the soundtrack, it was very good, I loved it. It was on par with the film, with background music for the different emotional moments we encounter in the story.

CODA: The Sounds of Silence is a great film that teaches us the importance of pursuing our dreams and the importance of the silent support of family, as well as how we can give support, but also receive it, especially when it comes to a person's personal growth. A film with a director and script that live up to the story, a flawless adaptation, a great cast, and a captivating soundtrack. If you haven't seen the film, you should. It has a plot that captures our attention, a moving story, as I said before, with a very beautiful message that can help other people grow as human beings, striking a balance between duty to the family and the need to find our own identity as individuals.

Una cosa que me llamó podesamente la atención es el hecho que el padre de Ruby es interpretado por Troy Kotsur, un actor sordo que por cierto fue quien ganó el Oscar como mejor actor de reparto, siendo el primer con falta de audición es ganar tan prestigiosa premio. Pero él no es el único, pues Daniel Durant y Marlee Matlin quienes le dan vida al hermano y madre de Ruby, también sufrieron la perdida de la audición. Sinceramente esta creo que fue uno de los mayores exitos de este filme y que le dio una gran sentido a la historia, pudimos conectar más con lo que se quería transmitir. También tenemos la participación del actor mexicano, Eugenio Derbez, que como siempre hace un gran trabajo y le da un toque de comedia a sus papeles. Por otro lado, el irlandés, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo tuvo otro papel dentro de la historia, aunque un poco con menos transcendencia que los otros, pero su participación fue de mi agrado. El reparto realmente no pudo ser mejor.

La fotografía de la película CODA, estuvo a cargo de Paula Huidobro, un talento latinoamericano. La también mexicana, nos presenta un trabajo visual cálido, con un estilo bastante natural con el cual pude conectar con lo que estaba apreciando. Una película bastante cercana, que transmite mucha ternura, incluso nos puede llegar a sacar lágrimas con escenas muy conmovedoras. Lo que más me gustó fueron las partes del mar, la pesca, que nos enseña la belleza del mar y la naturaleza, además del duro trabajo que realizan estas personas, con condiciones complicadas, pero que además muchas personas se pueden aprovechar de las personas. En cuanto a la banda sonora, estuvo muy bien, me encantó, estuvo a la altura de la película, con composiciones de fondo para los diferentes momentos emocionales que nos encontramos en la historia.

CODA: Los sonidos del silencio es una gran película que nos enseña a lo importante de perseguir nuestros sueños y lo considerable del apoyo muteo de la familia, así como podemos brindar un apoyo, pues también recibirlo y más cuando se trata del crecimiento personal de una persona. Una película con un director y guion a la altura de la historia, una adaptación sin desperdicio, un reparto grandioso, una banda sonora que cautiva. Si no has visto el filme, pues lo debes hacer, una trama que captan nuestra atención, una historia conmovedora tal como dije anteriormente, con un mensaje muy bonito y que puede ayudar a otras personas a crecer, como seres humanos a hacer un balance entre el deber hacia la familia y la necesidad de conseguir nuestra propia identidad como personas.
