Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story (Eng-Esp)

The World in His Hands, or Miracle Hands, is a 2009 film directed by filmmaker Thomas Carter. The screenplay was written by John Pielmeier. It is a film with a very interesting story, which I believe had a lot of potential. It is an adaptation that talks about personal growth, an inspiring film especially for young people, those who may be going through difficulties, where the support of our parents is always important, as in this case it was for the protagonist of the story, who always had his mother's support. This review is based on talking about the film and giving my personal opinion, all according to my personal experience of watching the production.

The film tells the story of Ben Carson, an African-American neurosurgeon who faced many difficulties in his studies as a young man, with his father's absence working against him at the time. But with the help of his mother, who instilled in him a love of reading, the young man managed to get ahead, studying to become a doctor and becoming one of the best, doing things that other doctors did not do. All because of his dedication, pushing himself at every moment, even with things he thought were impossible. Ben went through different things, including racism, although I think it was touched on lightly in the film, and I liked that, because many films are based on this theme and fail to address other details of the biographies of the people they want to show on the big screen. The central message of the film is that perseverance, faith, and education can transform lives even in the most adverse circumstances. A very beautiful theme, as always. It may be somewhat repetitive, but these are the stories that are ultimately worth showing to the public.

El mundo en sus manos o Manos milagrosas es una película del año 2009, dirigida por el cineasta Thomas Carter. El guion del filme estuvo a cargo de John Pielmeier. Una película con una historia bastante interesante, que considero que tenía bastante potencial, una adaptación que habla de la superación personal, una película inspiradoras sobre todo para los jóvenes, aquellos que pueden pasar por dificultades, donde siempre el apoyo de nuestros padres es importante, como en este caso lo fue el protagonista de la historia, quien siempre contó con su madre. Esta reseña está basada en hablar sobre la película, dar mi opinión personal, todo de acuerdo a mi experiencia personal a ver la producción.

La película nos cuenta la historia de Ben Carson, neurocirujano afroamericano, quien desde joven pasó por muchas dificultades en sus estudios, la ausencia de su padre le jugó en contra en su momento. Pero con la ayuda de su madre, quien le inculcó la lectura, el joven logró salir adelante, estudiando para médico y logrando ser de los mejores, haciendo cosas que otros médicos no hacían. Todo por su dedición, superándose en cada momento, incluso con cosas que creía imposible. Ben pasó por diferentes cosas, por el racismo, aunque creo que se tocó levemente en el filme y me gusto, pues muchas películas se basan en este tema y dejan de abordar otros detalles de las biografías de las personas que quieren mostrar en la gran pantalla. El mensaje central de la película es que la perseverancia, la fe y la educación pueden transformar la vida incluso en las circunstancias más adversas. Un tema bastante bonito como siempre. Puede que sea algo repetitivo, pero estas historias son las que al final valen la pena mostrarles al público.

What I like most about stories based on real events is that they teach us that things don't just happen in movies, but that anyone can achieve their dreams. In this case, Ben, through his sacrifice and the help of his family and his mother, was able to help others with surgeries that many believed impossible. Carson grew up in Baltimore and Detroit in a humble home with his mother Sonya and his brother Curtis after his parents separated. This could have led him down the wrong path, as he became a poor student, but following his mother's advice to read, he managed to get ahead, overcoming his low grades, but above all, bullying and racial discrimination, which are quite sensitive issues that we often see these days and that can affect the lives of many people, especially when we are young and can be weak-minded. That is where emotional support is important, having people by our side.

From the story, I can conclude that what it does want to show and convey is very good. A goal of personal inspiration, of overcoming adversity, regardless of poverty, racism, or bullying, allowed them to overcome all the barriers that stood in their way. The film focuses on several themes, not just one. Now, I think the story had a lot of potential, but the execution left a lot to be desired, as I feel that everything was very rushed, the narrative was very hurried, and I needed a little more pause to understand more of Ben's story. I don't think it's a disaster, but even though I consider myself someone who isn't too demanding when it comes to these issues, if you connect with the story, that's fine, but I think that in this case, the hour and a half of film was enough to cover everything that this biographical drama wanted to show. My overall experience with the plot was fine, but it could have been better in the sense I mentioned above.

Lo que más me gusta de las historias basadas en hechos reales, es que nos enseña que las cosas no solo se pueden dar en una película, sino que cualquier persona puede lograr sus sueños, en este caso Ben quien con su sacrificio, ayuda de su familia, de su madre pudo ayudar a las demás personas, con cirugías que muchos creían imposible. Carson creció en Baltimore y Detroit, en un hogar humilde con su madre Sonya y su hermano Curtis, tras la separación de sus padres. Esto lo pudo llevar a un mal camino, pues llegó a ser un mal estudiante, pero tras lo consejo de su madre, con la lectura, logró salir adelante, superó sus notas bajas, pero sobre todo el acoso escolar, además de la discriminación racial que son unos temas bastante delicados que solemos ver en estos días y que puede afectar la vida de muchas personas y más cuando somos jóvenes donde podemos ser débil de mente, allí es donde es importante el apoyo emocional, contar con personas a nuestro lado.

De la historia puedo concluir que lo que sí quiere mostrar y transmitir está muy bien. Un meta de inspiración personal, de superación, sin importar la pobreza, el racismo, el bullying, pudo superar todas las barreras que se les presentaron en el camino. La película se centra en varias temas, no en uno solo. Ahora bien, creo que la historia tenía bastante potencial, pero la ejecución dejó bastante que desear, pues siento que todo fue muy apurado, la narrativa estuvo muy apresurado, me saltó un poco más de pausa para entender más de la historia de Ben. No creo que sea un desastre, pero a pesar de considerarme una persona que no es tan exigente con estos temas, si conecta con la historia, está bien, pero opino que en este caso la hora y media de película nos bastó para abarcar todo lo que se quería mostrar de este drama bibliográfico. Mi experiencia en general en cuanto a la trama se refiere estuvo correcta, pero pudo ser mejor en el sentido ya mencionado.

Cuba Gooding Jr. played Ben Carson, doing a magnificent job with his character, as he portrayed his role, transcended the screen, and showed who Ben was and what he achieved through his perseverance. Jaishon Fisher played Ben Carson as a child, while Gus Hoffman played Ben as a teenager. Kimberly Elise played Sonya Carson, the mother of the story's protagonist. Both Cuba and Kimberly did a great job in their performances, giving the plot a leap in quality in the different emotional moments that our central characters in the story went through. It was a pretty good cast. The cinematography of the film was up to par, with quite emotional scenes that I was able to connect with quite a bit, which is a great success for the filmmaker. As for the soundtrack, I can tell you that the musical compositions were great, as there were compositions for the very emotional moments, connecting 100% with the scenes, and also classical music, as Ben apparently liked to perform surgical procedures with this type of music. I don't have much to complain about in this regard.

The World in Your Hands is a great, inspiring story, but its execution fell short of expectations, with a very rushed narrative. The story may be good, but the execution and adaptation can spoil the film a little, and I think that was the case here. While I don't think it was a total disaster, it does lower the quality of the film a bit, and that's a shame. I loved the soundtrack; I think it's one of the best things about the film, as I was able to connect with the different moments I was watching. Despite the detail mentioned, I still recommend the film, as I think we should always watch this type of film, especially with a story that is worthwhile.

Cuba Gooding Jr. hizo el papel de Ben Carson, haciendo un magnífico trabajo con su personaje, pues mostró su papel, traspasó la pantalla, mostró la persona que fue Ben y lo que logró con su perseverancia. Jaishon Fisher como el niño Ben Carson, mientras que Gus Hoffman hizo de Ben de adolescente. Kimberly Elise como Sonya Carson quien era la madre del protagonista de la historia. Tanto Cuba como Kimberly hicieron un gran trabajo en sus interpretaciones, dándole un salto de calidad a la trama, en los diferentes momentos emocionales que pasaban nuestros personajes centrales de la historia. Un cast que estuvo bastante bien. La fotografía de la película estuvo a la altura, con escenas bastante emotivas y con las que logré conectar bastante y es un gran acierto del cineasta. En cuanto a la banda sonora se refiere, les puedo decir que las composiciones musicales estuvieron geniales, pues había composiciones para los momentos muy emotivos, conectando al 100 con las escenas y también música clásica, pues al parecer Ben le gustaba realizar las intervenciones quirúrgicas con este tipo de músicas. En estos no tengo mucha queja.

El mundo en sus manos es una gran historia, inspiradora, pero su ejecución no fue lo esperado, su narrativo muy apresurado. La historia puede ser buena, pero la ejecución, la adaptación puede estropear un poco la película y creo que fue el caso. Si bien no creo que haya sido un desastre total, pero le baja un poco la calidad a la película y lo que estamos bien. La banda sonora me encantó, supongo que es de lo mejor del filme, pues logré conectar con los diferentes momentos que estaba viendo. A pesar del detalle mencionado, aun así recomiendo la película, pues pienso que este tipo de filme siempre la debemos ver y más con una historia que vale la pena.
