Hidden Figures is a 2016 film directed by filmmaker Theodore Melfi, with a screenplay by Allison Schroeder, adapted from the book by Margot Lee Shetterly. Lately, when I have some free time, I tend to watch videos on TikTok, a platform I didn't use before, but recently I've come across users who recommend films, and that's where I found Hidden Figures, a film that caught my attention from the start. The truth is that this production seemed familiar to me, perhaps because I had seen it at some point, but to be honest, I don't remember. Even so, I decided to watch it and give it a chance.

This film is a drama that deals with two rather controversial topics: racism and feminism. After the Second World War, the former Soviet Union and the United States began the Cold War, fighting for global dominance in terms of influence, a struggle between communism and capitalism. Among the struggles that began between the two great nations in the 1960s was the space race. This film tells the story of three African-American women, Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, who worked at the United States Space Agency, known as NASA. The 1960s was a time when racism and even sexism were at their peak, but these three women changed what was believed at the time. This is a story that had not been told before the film was released, a plot that is worth watching from beginning to end.

Figuras ocultas es una película de 2016 dirigida por el cineasta Theodore Melfi, cuyo guion estuvo a cargo de Allison Schroeder, una adaptación del libro de Margot Lee Shetterly. Últimamente, cuando tengo un tiempo libre, suelo ver algunos videos en TikTok, una plataforma que anteriormente no solía usar, pero últimamente me he encontrado con usuarios que recomiendan película y allí fue donde me encontré Figuras Ocultas, un filme que me llamó la atención desde un principio. La verdad es que esta producción se me hizo conocida, tal vez fue que la vi en algún momento, pero no lo recuerdo para ser sincero. Aun así decidí verla y darle una oportunidad.

Esta película es un drama que trata dos temas bastante controversiales, como es el racismo y el feminismo. Luego de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la extinta Unión Soviética y Estados Unidos comenzaron con la Guerra Fría, para hacerse con el dominio mundial en cuanto a influencia, una lucha entre el comunismo y el capitalismo. Entre la lucha que comenzaron las dos grandes naciones en los años 60 fue la carrera espacial. Esta película nos cuenta la historia de tres mujeres afroamericanas Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan y Mary Jackson, quienes trabajaron en la Agencia Espacial de los Estados Unidos, lo que conocemos como la NASA. En los 60 era una época donde el racismo e incluso el machismo estaba en su máxima expresión, pero estas tres mujeres dieron un cambio en lo que se creía en su momento. Esta es una historia que no fue contada anteriormente, antes de estrenar el filme, una trama que vale la pena de ver de principio a fin.

I must say that I am not much of a film buff, I like to watch films purely for entertainment, to pass the time, and to see this kind of film with a story of personal triumph based on real events that can undoubtedly help many people. And even more so with the story of the three African-American women who worked at NASA and paved the way for women, regardless of their skin colour, to contribute to one of the most important events in history, such as the first time man walked on the moon. I must say that the story is well written, a really great adaptation, a film that captures your attention from beginning to end, without a single wasted second. We often see productions with tedious, rather boring moments, but that is not the case with Hidden Figures.

The film depicts an area that was segregated, such as the Computing Unit, which was made up of black women. We know that in the 1960s in the United States, people of colour were generally frowned upon by white people, they could not be in the same place, they had to use different toilets, these people were discriminated against, and black women were not even allowed to study at white universities. Racism still exists today, although we don't see the things that we did in the past. In short, this film shows us the great contribution made by these three black women who played a major role in the United States winning the space race, or at least being the first to reach the moon. In addition to the central theme, I also like to see everything that went on behind the scenes of this feat, stories that perhaps very few people know about.

I thought the performances in the film were spectacular, with Taraji P. Henson playing Katherine Goble Johnson, who has a great talent for mathematics and even sees beyond it. This character was portrayed as a mathematical genius, albeit quite insecure, but I loved the character development, as she managed to become a self-confident woman. Octavia Spencer plays Dorothy Vaughan, who was also a mathematician in charge of the aforementioned computing department and who fought to obtain the position of supervisor. Dorothy was a very strong woman who loved what she did and fought hard to achieve her dreams. We also have Janelle Monáe, a mathematician whose dream was to become an engineer, something that was difficult at the time simply because she was a woman and because of the colour of her skin. Kevin Costner has a stellar performance in the film, as does Kirsten Dunst. Truly an exceptional cast.

Debo decir que no soy muy cinéfilo que digamos, me gusta ver filme por solo entretenimiento, para pasar un rato y ver está clase de filme con una historia de superación personal basada en hechos reales que sin lugar a dudas puede ayudar a muchas personas. Y más con la historia de las tres mujeres afroamericana que trabajaron en la NASA y dieron un comienzo para que las mujeres sin importar su color de piel, dieran su aporte en uno de los hechos más importante de la historia, como la primera vez del hombre pisar la luna. Debo decir que la historia está bien escrita, una adaptación realmente estupenda, un filme que capta la atención de principio a fin, no tiene ni un segundo de desperdicio. Muchas veces vemos producciones donde hay momentos tediosos, bastante aburridos, pero con Figuras Ocultas no es el caso.

La película un área que estaba segregada, como la Unidad de computación que estaba formada por mujeres de color de piel negra, donde sabemos que en la época de los 60 normalmente en Estados Unidos las personas de color estaban mal vistas por los blancos, no podían coincidir en el mismo sitio, tenía que usar baños distintos, estas personas eran discriminadas, incluso las mujeres de color no podían cursar sus estudios en universidades de blancos. Actualmente, aún existe el racismo, aunque tampoco vemos las cosas que en el pasado sí que daban. En fin, esta película nos muestra el gran aporte de estas tres mujeres negras que dieron su gran aporte en que Estados Unidos ganará la carrera espacial o al menos ser los primeros en llegar a la luna. Además de tema central, también me gusta ver todo lo que se realizó detrás de esta hazaña, historias detrás que quizás muy pocos conocen.

Las actuaciones del filme me parecieron espectacular y es que tenemos la participación de Taraji P. Henson como Katherine Goble Johnson, quien tiene un gran talento en la matemática, incluso ver más allá. Este personaje se mostraba como un genio en las matemáticas aunque bastante insegura, pero el desarrollo de personaje me encantó, logrando ser una mujer segura de sí misma. Octavia Spencer como Dorothy Vaughan, quien también era una matemática quien era la encargada del área de computación ya antes mencionaba, quien peleaba por obtener el puesto de supervisora. Dorothy una mujer bastante fuerte, quien amaba lo que hacía y luchaba muchos por lograr sus sueños. También tenemos a Janelle Monáe, una matemática quien su sueño era lograr ser una ingeniera, algo que era difícil en su momento nada más por ser mujer y su color de piel. Kevin Costner tiene una participación estelar en el filme y también Kirsten Dunst. Realmente un trabajo excepcional de cast.

The photography and soundtrack are another of the film's strengths. The film shows us the NASA facilities where work was being done on the space race, where the best mathematicians worked, including women of colour at a time when racism was very strong, when white people had better working conditions and people of colour were segregated. Mandy Walker really did a great job of showing us these different aspects of the story being told. As for the soundtrack, I think it works quite well; it's nothing spectacular, but I can't say it's bad either. Hidden Figures is a great film that tells a story touching on issues such as civil rights, space travel and new technologies. The fight against racism so that all people have the same opportunities regardless of their race. A well-executed film in all aspects, a worthy adaptation, the narrative is well written, with interesting dialogue, majestic performances and artistically the film is well made.

La fotografía y la banda sonora es otro de los fuertes que podemos encontrar en el filme. El filme se nos muestra las instalaciones de la NASA, donde se trabajaba en la carrera espacial, donde trabajan los mejores matemáticos, entre ellos mujeres de color en una época donde el racismo era muy fuerte, donde los blancos tenían mejores condiciones se trabaja y los de color eran apartados. Realmente Mandy Walker hizo un gran trabajo en mostrarnos estos diferentes aspectos de la historia que se narra. En cuanto a la banda sonora, me parece que cumple bastante bien, no es nada espectacular, pero tampoco puedo decir que esté mal. La película Figuras Ocultas es un gran filme que nos narra una historia donde se tocan temas como los derechos civiles, los viajes espaciales y las nuevas tecnologías. La lucha por el racismo que todas las personas dispongan de la misma oportunidad sin importar su raza. Una película bien ejecutada en todos los aspectos, una adaptación a la altura, lo que se narra está bien escrito, con diálogos interesantes, actuaciones majestuosas y artísticamente el filme está bien realizado.
