Live Action: How to Train Your Dragon [ENG-ESP]

On 13 June 2025 the Live Action of the animated film How to Train Your Dragon was released, a production that I really wanted to see, I saw the animation and I really liked it. The expectations with this film were quite high, I was expecting a lot and I come to tell you my opinion based on my personal experience. The film was directed by Dean DeBlois, who himself was in charge of the screenplay, an adaptation of Cressida Cowell's books. This film is mainly executed like the original animation, although I consider that with certain minimal changes, although I don't remember very well, as I saw the animated film some time ago, but the feeling I got from it was of very slight changes.

The story of How to Train Your Dragon tells us about a community of Vikings who have a constant battle with dragons, as they attack the village, destroying everything in their path and taking the animals to feed their alpha dragon. The mission of the Vikings is to wipe out the dragons, since they are raised as children, but we have Hiccup, who is the son of the leader, a little clumsy, so he is relegated from the normal activities within the group. The reality is that this is a different young man, despite having the beliefs with which he grew up, he didn't have this thing of having to kill dragons, beyond wanting to do it to stand out and make his father and the inhabitants proud. Within the plot we have the dragon Night Fury, with whom our protagonist came to have a great connection, becoming very good friends beyond the traditions of the Vikings in the story.

El 13 de junio de 2025 se estrenó el Live Action de la película animada Cómo entrenar a tu dragón, una producción que tenía muchas ganas de ver, pues vi la animación, la verdad que me gustó. Las expectativas con este filme era bastante alta, me esperaba bastante y les vengo a contar mi opinión basada en mi experiencia personal. La película fue dirigida por Dean DeBlois, quien el mismo cineasta estuvo a cargo del guion, una adaptación de los libros de Cressida Cowell. Esta película se ejecuta principalmente como la animación original, aunque considero que con ciertos cambios mínimos, aunque no recuerdo muy bien, pues mi vi la película animada hace un tiempo, pero la sensación que me dejó fue de cambios muy ligeros.

La historia de Cómo entrenar a tu dragón nos habla de una comunidad de vikingos que tienen una lucha constante con dragones, pues estos atacan el pueblo, destruyen todo a su paso y se llevan los animales para alimentar a su dragón alfa. La misión de los vikingos es acabar con los dragones, desde de pequeño los crían para ello, pero tenemos a Hipo, quien es el hijo del líder, un poco torpe, por lo que es relegado de las actividades normales dentro del grupo. La realidad es que este es un joven distinto, a pesar de tener las creencias con la cual creció, no tenía eso de tener que acabar con los dragones, más allá de querer hacerlo para sobresalir y enorgullecer a su padre y a los habitantes. Dentro de la trama tenemos al dragón Furia Nocturna, con el cual nuestro protagonista llegó a tener una gran conexión, llegando a ser muy buenos amigos más allá de las tradiciones de los vikingos en la historia.

Hiccup does not fit the traditional Viking mould, he is creative, sensitive and does not want to fight dragons. Our protagonist wants to follow the traditions of the Vikings, even though he doesn't fit in, just to please his father. On the other hand, we have another group of young people who, if they want to follow the conviction they grew up with, do not understand Hiccup. What decision will our protagonist make? You can see that he has mixed feelings, but he also doesn't want to betray what he thinks. A film that gives us a great message of empathy, no matter how different we are, we can all fit in. It also shows us the courage of Hiccup, to follow his heart. A live action that at first I was a bit disappointed, but then I really loved it.

Being a live action and if we saw the animated film, we will know what the story is like, but often despite the success of the animation, it does not mean that the film with real actors, has the same success. As I said at the beginning I found the story a bit slow, it didn't convince me, but as the minutes went by, I connected much more with the film. The plot in general was good, with some details, but nothing that will ruin the final experience. The script was quite good, the dialogues quite accurate to understand what was being told. The photography is the best we will find in the film, the scenery, the use of technology for the recreation of the dragons, the costumes, among other things, is the highlight of the live action, How to train your dragon.

One of the things that always disappoints in this kind of films is the CGI, but the reality is that it is dazzling, and it has been one of the most praised aspects by critics and spectators, this after reading some comments before seeing the production. The dragons combined with the environment, with what we were seeing, obviously not what we are used to, but what we saw in the animation, so I consider that the success with this point is well valued. Cliffs, misty coasts and beautiful skies are what we find in the production. So the scenery lives up to expectations. The visual effects are also spectacular, very eye-catching.

Hipo no encaja en el molde vikingo tradicional, es creativo, sensible y no desea luchar contra dragones. Nuestro protagonista quiere cumplir con las tradiciones de los vikingos, más allá de que no encaja, solo para complacer a su padre. Por otro lado, tenemos a otro grupo de jóvenes que si quieren seguir la convicción con la cual crecieron, no entienden a Hipo. ¿Qué decisión tomará nuestro protagonista? Se ve que tiene sentimientos encontrados, pero también no quiere traicionar lo que piensa. Una película que nos da un gran mensaje de la empatía, no importa que seamos distintos, todos podemos encajar. También nos demuestra la valentía de Hipo, de seguir su corazón. Un Live action que al principio me estaba decepcionando un poco, pero luego sí que me encantó.

Al ser un live action y si vimos la película animada, pues vamos a saber como es la historia, pero muchas veces a pesar del éxito de la animación, no quiere decir que la película llevada con actores reales, tenga el mismo éxito. Como les dije al principio me pareció un poco lenta la historia, no me convencía, pero a medida que pasaban los minutos, conectaba mucho más con el filme. La trama en general fue buena, con algunos detalles, pero nada que arruinará la experiencia final. El guion bastante bien, los diálogos bastante acertados para entender lo que se estaba contando. La fotografía es de mejor que encontraremos en la película, la escenografía, el uso de la tecnología para la recreación de los dragones, los vestuarios, entre otras cosas más, es de lo más resaltante del live action, Cómo entrenar a tu dragón.

Una de las cosas que siempre decepciona en este tipo de películas es el CGI, pero la realidad es que deslumbrante, y ha sido uno de los aspectos más elogiados por críticos y espectadores, esto tras leer algunos comentarios antes de verme la producción. Los dragones combinaban con el entorno, con los que estábamos viendo, obviamente no a lo que estamos acostumbrados, pero sí a lo que vimos dentro de la animación, así que considero que el acierto con este punto, sí que es bien valorada. Acantilados, costas brumosas y cielos hermosos, es lo que nos encontramos en la producción. Así que los escenarios están a la altura de los esperados. Los efectos visuales también son espectaculares, muy vistosos.

By the way, the photography was in charge of Bill Pope. As far as the soundtrack is concerned, John Powell was in charge of the soundtrack, doing a magnificent job, taking us into the story and the different moments that we dare in the live action. The cast of How to Train Your Dragon is another plus point where Hiccup was played by Mason Thames, conveying very well what he wanted from his character. Within this production we also have Gerard Butler, the leader of the Vikings and father of the main character. The latter's name is Stoick. Nick Frost is another actor who plays one of the characters in the live action How to Train Your Dragon. Nico Parker gives life to another important character in the story. A pretty good cast that surprised me, as it has good actors and actresses who brought their characters to the story very well, giving a touch of humour to the film, just as we find in the animation, although I wasn't entirely convinced by the latter, but in the end it was what the director asked for.

The live action How to Train Your Dragon is a good production, a story that leaves us with a great message, if in the first minutes it didn't connect, but later on the action and other aspects of the story, improve the experience notably. The photography and the soundtrack, the visual effects, the countries, the costumes, give the film an engrandising touch. It has its details, but I consider it a production that was up to the mark, very entertaining and worth seeing. So I recommend it with my eyes closed. I'm sure you won't regret it.

Por cierto que la fotografía estuvo a cargo de Bill Pope. En lo que respecta a la banda sonora, el encargo fue John Powell haciendo un trabajo magnífico, adentrándonos en la historia y los diferentes momentos que atrevemos en el live action. El cast de Cómo entrenar a tu dragón es otro de los puntos a favor donde Hipo fue interpretado por Mason Thames, transmitiendo muy bien lo que quería de su personaje. Dentro de esta producción tenemos también a Gerard Butler, el líder de los vikingos y padre del protagonista. Este último se llama Stoick. Nick Frost es otro de los actores que interpreta a uno de los personajes del live action Cómo entrenar a tu dragón. Nico Parker le da vida a otro personaje importante dentro de la historia. Un cast bastante bueno y que me sorprendió, pues tiene buenos actores y actrices que llevaron muy bien sus personajes a la historia, dándole el toque de humor al filme, tal cual nos encontramos en la animación, aunque este último no me convenció de un todo, pero al final fue lo que le pidió la dirección.

El live action Cómo entrenar a tu dragón es una buena producción, una historia que nos deja un gran mensaje, si en los primeros minutos no conectaba, pero más adelante la acción y otros aspectos de la historia, mejoran notablemente la experiencia. De lo mejor la fotografía y la banda sonora, los efectos visuales, los paises, los vesturiarios, le dan un toque engrandecedor a la película. Tiene sus detalles, pero considero que es un producción que estuvo a la altura, muy entretenida y vale la pena verla. Así que la recomiendo con los ojos cerrados. Estoy seguro que no te vas a arrepentir.
