Recently, I watched a movie called Souls Marked: Rule + Shaw, an American Romantic Drama released in this 2025, which was directed by filmmaker Nick Cassavetes, while the screenplay was in charge of Sharon Soboil, adapted from the novel written by Jay Crownover with the name of "Rule". My expectations with the film were not so high, unlike other productions and even more with the disappointment of the last film I told you about in my blog (Bad Influence). As always, don't expect a professional review, as most of the text are personal opinions according to my experience.

What is the story about? Well, it is a story of drama and romance, where we have our two main characters, Shaw, a young girl who loves Rule, another young adult. Both are friends, they have known each other since they were very young, but Rule only feels an appreciation of friendship with Shaw. However, after one night they decide to give each other a chance, to see how their relationship works, because the boy sees her as part of his family, as she was the best friend of his twin brother, who died in an accident, so his family is not going through the best time. This story is a cliché of the typical plot of the young rebel and the good girl, a story in this sense similar in this sense to the previous movie I brought you last time.

Recientemente, me vi una película llamada Almas marcadas: Rule + Shaw, un Drama romántico estadounidense estrenado en este 2025, que fue dirigido por el cineasta Nick Cassavetes, mientras que el guion estuvo a cargo de Sharon Soboil, adaptada de la novela escrita por Jay Crownover con el nombre de "Rule". Mis expectativas con el filme no eran tan altas, a diferencia de otras producciones y más con la decepción de la última película que les hablé en mi blog (Mala Influencia). Como siempre, no esperen una crítica profesional, pues la mayor parte del texto son opiniones personales de acuerdo a mi experiencia.

¿De qué trata la historia? Pues es una historia de drama y romance, donde tenemos a nuestros dos personajes principales, Shaw, una joven que ama, a Rule, otro joven adulto. Ambos son amigos, se conocen desde muy pequeños, pero Rule solo siente un aprecio de amistad sobre Shaw. Sin embargos estos dos luego de una noche deciden darse una oportunidad, para ver que tal funciona su relación, pues el chico la ve como parte de su familia, pues era la mejor amiga de su hermano gemelo, quien falleció en un accidente, por lo que su familia no pasa por el mejor momento. Esta historia es un cliché de la típica trama del joven rebelde y la chica buena, una historia en este sentido similar en este sentido a la anterior película que les traje la última vez.

Shaw is a girl who studies medicine, a young woman with very good feelings and who is interested in others. While Rule is a tattoo artist, who has a bad temporary, all after losing his brother and that his family was immersed in that pain and as much as they tried to move forward, they were always under the shadow of an event that marked their lives. Rule tries to take refuge in the creation of tattoos, which for many is considered an art. Both are very different people, Shaw is wealthy, her mother wants to control her, while Rule can be considered a free soul. A film that can be interesting, it is aimed at young people and contains some racy scenes.

The story seems a bit repetitive, but I must confess that I like this kind of plot. I read a little bit that several fans were disappointed with the adaptation, because they considered that the literary work was very good, but they didn't know how to take it to the screen. Personally I think the plot was ok, nothing that impressed me, but at least it wasn't as disappointing as the previous movie I saw, which is the first time I can say it was a total failure. I liked the story and its characters, the script was pretty good, there were moments where the dialogues were nonsense and somewhat tedious, but nothing that ruined my whole experience.

The how much to the cast I thought it was very good, where Chase Stokes played Rule Archer, while Shaw was played by Sydney Taylor. On screen they were a good couple, although with noticeable differences. The performances in general seemed to me quite correct, the chemistry between Chase and Sydney was noticeable, but I'm not going to say it was a masterpiece, because in terms of dialogue and story it has certain lacks, so it can be concluded that they did a great job with the story they were offered. Again and again, it was not a bad movie in terms of story, but it was not something exceptional either. As for the director's work, Nick Cassavetes stood out with some scenes and shots that highlighted what was being presented to us, but in general I expected more.

Shaw es una chica que estudia medicina, una joven de muy buenos sentimientos y quien se interesa por lo demás. Mientras que Rule es tatuador, quien tiene un mal temporalmente, todo tras perder a su hermano y que su familia se sumergió en ese dolor y por más que trataron de salir adelante, siempre estaban bajo de sombra de un suceso que marcó sus vidas. Rule trata de refugiar en la creación de tatoo, quienes para mucho es considerado como un arte. Ambos son personas muy distintas, Shaw es adinerada, su madre la quiere controlar, mientras que Rule se puede considerar como un alma libre. Una película que puede ser interesante, va dirigida a los jóvenes y contiene escenas un poco picantes.

La historia me parece un poco repetitiva, pero debo confesar que este tipo de trama me gustan. Leí un poco que varios fanáticos estaban decepcionados de la adaptación, pues consideraban que la obra literaria estaba muy bien, pero no se supo llevar a la pantalla. En lo personal creo que la trama fue correcta, nada que me impresionara, pero al menos no fue tan decepcionante como la anterior película que me vi, que es la primera vez que puedo decir que fue un total fracaso. Me gustó la historia y sus personajes, el guion estuvo bastante bien, hubo momentos donde los diálogos eran sin sentido y algo tedioso, aunque nada que arruinara la totalidad de mi experiencia.

El cuánto al cast me pareció que estuvo muy bien, donde Chase Stokes hizo de Rule Archer, mientras que Shaw fue interpretada por Sydney Taylor. En la pantalla se veía una buena pareja, aunque con diferencias notables. Las actuaciones en general me parecieron bastante correctas, se notaba la química entre Chase y Sydney, pero no voy a decir que fue una obra maestra, pues en cuanto a los diálogos e historia tiene ciertas carencias, por lo que se puede concluir que hicieron un gran trabajo con la historia que les ofrecieron. Vuelvo y repito, no fue una mala película en cuento a historia, pero tampoco fue algo excepcional. En cuanto a la labor del director, Nick Cassavetes se destacó con algunas escenas y planos que destacaban lo que se nos estaban presentando, pero en general me esperaba más.

The cinematography of the film was also very good, with a good setting and quite nice places that are presented to us in this story. The soundtrack is one of the most outstanding aspects of the film, as it was able to connect with the scenes, with background music according to the situation. The music is one of the best we will find in Marked Souls, although I can't say it was a work of art, it only fulfilled what was asked of it. What did I think of the film? Well, the truth is that it wasn't a disaster like Mala influencia, the Spanish movie I told you about last time I was here, it has a pretty generic story, but at least it's good to pass the time, I don't think it's as bad as some reviews I've read.

Marked souls does not put even though it can really work a relationship of two people who had a friendship. The truth is that this is usually a controversial topic, which usually brings divided opinions, but personally I think it depends, because most of the cases, it ends badly and both end up distanced, something that Rule did not want to have something with Shaw, despite both having a great connection, they loved each other, but often we tend to confuse things. Do I recommend this movie? I don't think it's for everyone, but I consider that if you are a lover of the genre it can at least pass the time.

La fotografía del filme también fue muy correcto, con una buena ambientación y lugares bastante agradables que se nos presetan en esta historia. La banda sonora sí que es uno de los aspectos que más puedo destacar del filme, pues pudo conectar con las escenas, con músicas de fondos de acuerdo a la situación. La música es una de las mejores que encontraremos en Almas marcadas, aunque tampoco puedo decir que fue una obra de arte, tan solo cumplió con lo que se le pedía. ¿Qué me pareció el filme? Pues la verdad es que no fue un desastre como Mala influencia, la película española que les hable en la última oportunidad que estuve por acá, tiene una historia bastante genérica, pero que al menos sirve para pasar el rato, no creo que sea tan mala como algunas reseñas que leí.

Almas marcadas no pone a pesar de que sí realmente puede funcionar una relación de dos personas que tenían una amistad. La verdad es que este suele ser un tema controversial, que trae normalmente opiniones divididas, pero en lo personal creo que depende, pues la mayor parte de los casos, termina mal y ambos terminan distanciado, algo por lo cual Rule no quería tener algo con Shaw, a pesar de ambos tener una gran conexión, se querían, pero muchas veces solemos confundir las cosas. ¿Recomiendo esta película? No creo que sea para todo el mundo, pero considero que si eres amante del género al menos puede pasar el rato.
