The Cure, also known as Que nada nos separe, is a 1995 family drama film directed by Peter Horton. It tackles a rather controversial topic: the stigmatization of people with AIDS, especially in the past, when this disease was frowned upon and people believed it could be spread through simple contact, even just breathing. Although it is hard to believe, there are still people who believe this. The script for the production was written by Robert Kuhn, and I really liked the story. Below, I will give you my honest opinion based on my experience.

The story of Que nada nos separe (Let Nothing Separate Us) tells us about Dexter, an 11-year-old boy who contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion. Due to his delicate health, he had to stay at home and couldn't go out. The young boy was little known, didn't talk or play with other children, but then Erik, a 13-year-old boy, moved in next door with his mother. Erik's parents were separated, and he behaved badly. His mother treated him poorly, but the little boy came into his life, and they became great friends, both bringing light into each other's lives. Despite the differences and restrictions imposed by their families, the two develop a deep bond.

The Cure, que también es conocida como Que nada nos separe, es una película de Peter Horton de 1995, del género de drama familiar. Una película que toca un tema bastante polémico, como es la estigmatización de las personas con SIDA, más en el pasado, cuando esta enfermedad era mal vista y las personas creían que se contagiaba por simple contacto, por solo respirar. Aunque sea difícil de creer, pero aún hay persona que lo cree. El guion de la producción estuvo a cargo de Robert Kuhn, una historia que realmente me gustó y a continuación les voy a dar mi opinión sincera de acuerdo a su experiencia.

La historia de Que nada nos separe, nos habla de Dexter, un chico de 11 años que por una transfusión de sangre, fue contagiado de SIDA, que por su delicado estado de salud, este debía permanecer en su casa, no podía salir. El joven era poco conocido, no hablaba ni jugaba con otro niño, pero llegó Erik, un joven de 13 años quien junto a su madre se mudó al lado. Los padres de Erik estaban separados, el chico tenía un mal comportamiento, su madre lo trataba mal, pero llegó a su vida el pequeño, convirtiéndose en grandes amigos, ambos llegaron a darle luz a sus respectivas vidas. A pesar de las diferencias y las restricciones impuestas por sus familias, los dos desarrollan un vínculo profundo.

Personally, I prefer to watch more recent films, but this is a classic, a film with a beautiful story about true friendship, a bond that continues despite adversity. Erick never believed he was Dexter's friend, but this sick boy was vulnerable. He only had his mother, no friends, and played alone. Then this young man arrived, rebellious but with a big heart, so much so that he took his friend to a doctor who supposedly had the cure for his illness. A drama with a beautiful story, although the ending is not as happy as I would have liked, it has its sad moments, but it is a film that shows us that true friendships do exist, those people who are there for you at all times.

The central themes of the film are friendship, hope for life, and the fight against stigma. I think the latter was what I connected with the most. People with HIV/AIDS often don't tell anyone because they fear rejection and what others will say. This moving, sensitive story shows how love and friendship can be more powerful than any disease or social barrier. Is the story perfect? Well, no, it could use a little more character development, but I think the plot is worthwhile. I was left with the story and the different messages we can take away from it.

As for the cast, I think the selection was pretty good. Brad Renfro brought Erick to life, conveying that rebellious young man with a big heart. On the other hand, Joseph Mazzello as Dexter gave us a moving character, a fragile child. I really connected with both characters, even though they were quite young when they brought their roles to life. We also have Diana Scarwid as Gail, Erik's mother, a woman who has no patience for her son and even mistreats him. I would have liked to know more about this character to see how she became such a bitter and intolerant woman. Although it is also true that Gail only wanted to protect her son, even if her methods were not the right ones. Many times, we fear the outside world, the unknown. Dexter's mother was played by Annabella Sciorra, known as Linda, a brave woman, the opposite of Erik's mother, although they had something in common: simply protecting their children.

En lo personal soy más de ver películas actuales, más recientes, pero esta es un clásico, una película que tiene una bonita historia que relata la amistad verdadera, un vínculo que continúa a pesar de las adversidades. Erick nunca creyó ser amigo de Dexter, pero este niño enfermo era vulnerable, solo tenía a su madre, no tenía amigos, jugaba solo, pero llegó este joven, aunque rebelde, pero de un gran corazón, tanto así que llevó a su amigo para un doctor que supuestamente tenía la cura de la enfermedad. Un drama con una bonita historia, aunque el final no es tan feliz como quería, tiene sus momentos tristes, pero una película que nos muestra que las verdaderas amistades sí existen, aquellas personas que están en todo momento.

Los temas centrales del filme son la amistad, la esperanza a la vida y la lucha contra el estigma, creo que este último fue con lo que más conecté. Las personas, muchas veces al tener VIH/SIDA, no lo cuentan, pues con el miedo del rechazo, por el que dirán. Esta historia conmovedora, sensible que muestra cómo el amor y la amistad pueden ser más poderosos que cualquier enfermedad o barrera social. ¿La historia es perfecta? Pues no, puede que le falte algo más de desarrollo de los personajes, pero la trama, si considero que vale la pena, me quedó con la historia y los diferentes mensajes que podemos sacar de ella (historia).

En cuanto al cast refiere, creo que la selección estuvo bastante bien. Brad Renfro le dio vida a Erick, supo transmitir ese joven rebelde, pero de gran corazón. Por otro lado, Joseph Mazzello como Dexter nos dio un personaje conmovedor, un niño frágil. Realmente conecté con ambos personajes, a pesar de cuando le dieron vida a sus papeles, eran bastante jóvenes. También tenemos a Diana Scarwid como Gail, la madre de Erik, una mujer que no le tiene paciencia a su hijo, incluso lo llega a maltratar. Este último personaje me hubiese gustado conocer más del mismo para ver como llegó a ser una mujer amargada e intolerante. Aunque también es cierto que Gail solo quería proteger a su hijo, aunque la forma no era la correcta. Muchas veces las personas le tememos al mundo exterior, a lo desconocido. A la madre de Dexter, le dio vida Annabella Sciorra, conocida como Linda, una mujer valiente, todo lo contrario a la madre de Erick, aunque tenían algo en común, simplemente proteger a sus hijos.

Andrew Dintenfass was responsible for the cinematography. I liked it; I think it was a great choice for this type of film. I liked the locations where the story unfolded and the way it was presented to the audience. I also think the soundtrack was adequate, nothing extraordinary. The music for Que nada nos separe was composed by Dave Grusin. I think this film is simple, it gets straight to the point without beating around the bush. It's a very moving drama, but there are also some very beautiful details in the plot, beyond the sad moments. It's a good film, with a story that's worth watching. So I recommend it, you won't regret it.

La fotografía del filme estuvo a cargo de Andrew Dintenfass. Esta me gustó, creo que para el tipo de película, fue un gran acierto. Me gusto los lugares donde se desarrolló la historia, la forma en que se mostró la misma al público. La banda sonora también me parece que cumplió, nada extraordinario. La música de Que nada nos separe estuvo a cargo de Dave Grusin. Esta película me parece sencilla, va directamente al grano sin dar muchas vueltas. Un drama bastante conmovedor, pero también nos podemos quedar con detalles muy bonitos dentro de la trama, más allá de los momentos tristes. Una buena película, con una historia que vale la pena ver. Así que se las recomiendo, no se van a arrepentir.
