“Project End of the World,” also known as “Project Salvation,” is a 2026 science fiction film directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The story is a cliché—a plot we’ve seen in other films that deal with the end of the world, aliens, and space adventure. I have to say that this used to be one of my favorite genres, but for a while now I’ve been interested in other kinds of stories; even so, I decided to give it a chance, and overall I really liked the result. As always, I want to make it clear that this isn’t a professional review—it’s an opinion based on my personal experience, taking into account how entertained I was and the feelings the film evoked in me.

The film begins with a fair amount of uncertainty, as we find a man on a spaceship—the only survivor—who can’t remember anything. Then, little by little, we begin to understand where the story is headed, with Ryland Grace, a science professor, waking up on the ship in space. I like this movie for its story because it combines several interesting genres, including the thriller, as we have several possible scenarios within the story and the plot’s twists and turns gradually unfold. As a story in general, I find it interesting—nothing new, but it does have some unique details, which is why I consider it original. I must say it surprised me quite a bit because I didn’t expect it to also involve aliens.

Life on Earth is in danger because the sun is dying due to a strange substance that is killing it, so Ryland Grace is sent to investigate the situation and report back, putting his life at risk because he will most likely not have the chance to return. In the film, we encounter a series of mysteries; as the protagonist regains his memory, we learn more details, so we may be surprised by how it differs from other stories we’ve seen. At first I thought the movie would be boring, since having just one person on the ship is pretty tedious, but we get plenty of great flashbacks to Earth, a smooth transition between the present and the past, which gives the movie meaning.

Proyecto Fin del mundo, que también se conoce como Proyecto Salvación, es una película de este 2026, un filme de ciencia ficción dirigido por Phil Lord y Christopher Miller. La historia de esta producción es un cliché, una trama que podemos ver en otras producciones donde se toca el fin del mundo, los extraterrestres y la aventura espacial. Debo decir que en el pasado este era de mis géneros favoritos, pero de un tiempo para acá me he interesado en otras clases de historias; aun así decidí darle una oportunidad y el resultado logrado con esta película me gustó bastante en general. Como siempre, me gusta aclarar que esta no es una crítica profesional, es una opinión basada en mi experiencia personal, tomando en cuenta mi entretenimiento y las sensaciones logradas con el filme.

La película comienza con bastante incertidumbre, pues nos encontramos con un hombre en una nave espacial, siendo este el único vivo, donde el personaje no se acuerda de nada. Luego, poco a poco nos vamos enterando hacia dónde va la historia, con Ryland Grace, un profesor de ciencia, quien es el que despierta en la nave, en el espacio. Esta película me gusta por su historia porque combina varios géneros interesantes, entre los que se encuentra el thriller, pues tenemos varios escenarios posibles dentro de la historia y poco a poco se van abriendo las aristas de la trama. Como historia en general me parece interesante, nada nuevo, pero sí que tiene algunos detalles, por lo cual la considero original. Debo decir que me sorprendió bastante porque no me imaginé que se trataba también de extraterrestres.

La vida en la Tierra se ve en peligro porque el sol está muriendo por una extraña sustancia que los está matando, por lo que Ryland Grace es enviado a investigar la situación, para que enviara la información, poniendo su vida en riesgo porque lo más probable es que no tendría la oportunidad de regresar. En la película nos encontramos con una serie de enigmas que, a medida que el protagonista va recuperando la memoria, vamos conociendo detalles, por lo que nos podremos sorprender más allá de ser una historia similar a otras que hayamos tenido la oportunidad de ver. Al principio pensé que la película sería aburrida, pues tener a una persona en la nave solo es bastante tedioso, pero tenemos múltiples recuerdos en la Tierra muy buenos, una buena transición entre lo actual y el pasado, dándole sentido a la película.

La historia de la película está bastante bien ejecutada; al principio algo lenta pero luego va agarrando ritmo. La mayor parte de la historia se centra en el profesor Grace, que es interpretado por Ryan Gosling, haciendo un maravilloso trabajo con su personaje, un personaje un poco extraño, con bastantes conocimientos, pero también divertido, dándole un toque de humor al filme en algunos momentos; no solo es tensión. Pues en cuanto al cast, no tengo mucho más que ofrecer, pues tenemos otros personajes secundarios, que algunos tienen algo de relevancia en la historia, pero todo se centra en el profesor, quien debe tratar de cumplir con su misión, incluso cuando se haya sentido traicionado.

Greig Fraser handled the cinematography and did a fantastic job. I loved the film visually—from the spaceship itself to how they recreated all the systems inside it, the technology, and more. I also loved the flashbacks to science teacher Ryland Grace, showing how they conducted all the tests for the mission and the research they undertook to find a solution—otherwise, there would be no tomorrow. But from my point of view, the best part of all is the soundtrack—compositions that reflected the moments our protagonists were going through, the moments of tension, of not knowing what was happening, some tracks even in dark moments that are perfect for a thriller, but also those with more movement for certain moments that can bring a smile to our faces.

“The Martian” is a film adaptation of the novel written by Andy Weir, and even though I haven't read the book, I think the adaptation—while perhaps not perfect—was certainly good enough to capture my attention, despite my low expectations. It’s a production with a story that builds steadily, cinematography that lives up to the film’s scale, and a soundtrack that I consider exceptional—the best part of all. I really recommend watching the film if you haven’t already; I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

La fotografía estuvo a cargo de Greig Fraser, haciendo un gran trabajo. Me encantó la película en lo visual, tanto la nave especial, como recrearon todos los sistemas dentro de ella, la tecnología y más. Además, también de los recuerdos del profesor de ciencias Ryland Grace, como realizaron todas las pruebas para la misión, las respectivas investigaciones para encontrar una solución o no habría un mañana. Pero desde mi punto de vista, lo mejor de todo es la banda sonora, unas composiciones que reflejaban el momento que estaban pasando nuestros protagonistas, los momentos de tensión, de no saber lo que está pasando, unos temas incluso en momentos oscuros que son perfectos para un thriller, pero también aquellos más movidos para algunos momentos que nos pueden sacar una sonrisa.

Proyecto Fin del mundo es una película, una adaptación de la novela escrita por Andy Weir, y, aun no haber leído la historia literaria, considero que la adaptación no sé si fue perfecta, pero sí bastante buena para captar mi atención a pesar de tener expectativas bajas. Una producción con una historia que va de menos a más, una fotografía que está a la altura de un proyecto como el filme y una banda sonora que considero que es excepcional, lo mejor de todo. Realmente les recomiendo ver el filme si aún no lo han hecho; estoy seguro de que no se llevarán una decepción.
