The Great Debaters [ENG-ESP]

Friends of the Movies & TV Shows community, I hope you are all well. Today I bring you another review of a movie I saw recently. It is called The Great Debate, a 2007 American film directed by Denzel Washington, while the script was written by Robert Eisele, and Tony Scherman, based on the story by Jeffrey Porro. At the beginning my interest in the film was not so high, I had low expectations and I will tell you below how I found it, based on my personal experience and the connection I had with the production.

PLOT

The plot of the film tells us about Mel Tolson, who is a professor at Wiley College in Texas, who formed a debate group. The house of study was an all African-American school, an all-black school, at a time when racism was at its peak, in the United States there were many problems in this regard. One of the great milestones that we find in the film is the fact that young African Americans would face the prestigious Harvard University, who were formed by young white, upper class people. This film shows us the struggle, the racism, in an era where racial segregation in the U.S. was at its peak.

La misma lleva por nombre El gran debate, un filme estadounidense de 2007 dirigida por Denzel Washington, mientras que el guion estuvo a cargo de Robert Eisele, y Tony Scherman, basado en la historia de Jeffrey Porro. Al inicio mi interés por el filme no era tan alto, tenía bajas expectativas y a continuación les contaré que tal me pareció, basado en mi experiencia personal y la conexión que tuvo con la producción.

Trama

La trama de la película nos habla sobre Mel Tolson, quien es un profesor en la universidad de Wiley College de Texas, quien formó un grupo de debate. La casa de estudio estudiaban puros jóvenes afroamericanos, una escuela de negros, en una época donde el racismo estaba un máximo esplendor, en Estados Unidos había muchos problemas en este sentido. Uno de los grandes hitos que encontramos en el filme es el hecho que los jóvenes afroamericanos se enfrentarían a prestigiosa Universidad de Harvard, quienes eran formadas por jóvenes blancos, personas de clase alta. Esta película nos muestra la lucha, el racismo, en una era donde la segregación racial en EE. UU estaba en su plenitud.

Mel Tolson is played by the same director Denzel Washington, an American actor who I have seen in several productions of this type and I have seen his work impeccable. Professor Mel is a character with a lot of determination who believes that preparation is one of the most important points with which at that time could fight racism, the oppression suffered by African-Americans at the time. This discussion group is determined to show that racial difference can be fought. We have to give our young people the impression... that there will be many difficulties in their way. And they have to know how to overcome them! This last sentence is a clear message that Denzel Washington wants to show us in the movie The Great Debate.

This movie has a great story, highlighting that it is based on real events, so I find it with even more value. Among the main objectives of the director and the film to show the power of education and that this can defeat anything, we can convince people to have a great knowledge and confidence to speak in front of people, be prepared for any situation that may arise, know how to act when we believe that we are cornered. It also sought to rescue the figure of Professor Tolson and his struggle with oppression and racism in the 1935 era, where even many African Americans were killed and this remained virtually unpunished.

Another highlight of the film is the cast, which is made up of some experienced actors, including Denzel Washington, who manages to convey everything he wants to send to the viewer. Forest Whitaker is another actor who works in this film and his work is very good. We also have young actors, led by Nate Parker, Denzel Whitaker, Kimberly Elise, among others, who do a very outstanding job in the film, so it gives a greater connection to the story with the audience, which is a positive point.

Mel Tolson es interpretado por el mismo director Denzel Washington, un actor estadounidense quien lo he visto en varias producciones de este tipo y su trabajo lo he visto impecable. El Profesor Mel es un personaje con mucha determinación que cree que la preparación es uno de los puntos más importante con el que en ese momento se podía combatir el racismo, a la opresión que sufrían los afroamericanos en la época. Este grupo de debate tiene la determinación de demostrar que se puede luchar con la diferencia racial. “Tenemos que darles la impresión a nuestros jóvenes... de que habrá muchas dificultades en su camino. ¡Y tienen que saber vencerlas! Esta última frase es un claro mensaje que nos quiere mostra Denzel Washington en la película El gran debate.

Esta película tiene una gran historia, resaltando que es basada en hechos reales, por lo que la encuentro con aún más valor. Entre los principales objetivos del director y de la película de mostrar el poder de la educación y que este puede derrotar cualquier cosa, podemos lograr convencer a las personas al tener un gran conocimiento y seguridad al hablar frente de las personas, estar preparados para cualquier situación que se nos pueda presentar, sabe actuar cuando nos creen que estamos acorralados. También se buscaba rescatar la figura del profesor Tolson y su lucha con la opresión y en racismo en la época de 1935, donde, incluso, muchos afroamericanos eran matados y esto quedaban prácticamente impune.

Otro punto a resaltar en la película es el cast, que están integrados por algunos actores de experiencia, en lo que destacan Denzel Washington, quien logra transmitir todo lo que quiere enviar al espectador. Forest Whitaker es otro actor que trabaja en este filme y su trabajo es muy bueno. También tenemos a actores jovenes, liderados por Nate Parker, Denzel Whitaker, Kimberly Elise, entre otros más, que hacen un trabajo muy destacado dentro de la película, por lo que le da una mayor conexión a la historia con el público, por lo que es un punto positivo.

The cinematography of the film The Great Debate was in charge of Philippe Rousselot, managing to convey to the audience the message of struggle and dignity, with a sober tone that I can say I could connect a lot with the story. We also find great scenes, shots that capture much more attention, being a great success. Additionally, we have outstanding scenarios of the time, with a costume according to the production that was being presented, so it gives a higher level to the production. The soundtrack is another aspect to highlight, as this film is a drama based on real events, so some scenes can bring tears to our eyes, being a film with many sentimental moments and the atmosphere is well achieved with the compositions made by Peter Golub and James Newton Howard.

The Great Debate is an excellent film, a film that goes far beyond a simple story where a group of students stand out in the debate groups, it achieves something more, it gives us messages, it reminded us of the oppression that people suffered simply because of the color of their skin, but with preparation, education, fortitude, we can fight with anything. This film has a good script that makes the story flow smoothly and does not become tedious. In addition, the film has a great cast, good photography, soundtrack and more that we can highlight from the production. For me it is a 10/10, 100% recommendable.

La fotografía de la película El gran debate estuvo a cargo de Philippe Rousselot, logrando transmitir al público el mensaje de lucha y dignidad, con un tono sobrio que puedo decir que pude conectar mucho con la historia. También nos encontramos con grandes escenas, planos que captan mucho más la atención, siendo un gran acierto. Adicionalmente, tenemos escenarios destacados de la época, con un vestuario acorde a la producción que se estaba presentando, por lo que le da un mayor nivel a la producción. La banda sonora es otro aspecto a destacar, pues esta película es un drama basado en hechos reales, por lo que algunas escenas nos pueden sacar las lágrimas, siendo una película con bastantes momentos sentimentales y el ambiente es bien logrado con las composiciones realizas por Peter Golub y James Newton Howard.

El gran debate es una excelente película, un filme que va mucho más allá de una simple historia donde un grupo de estudiantes resaltar en los grupos de debates, si no que logra algo más, nos da mensajes, nos recordó la opresión que sufrieron las personas simplemente por el color de su piel, pero con la preparación, educación, fortaleza, podemos luchar con cualquier cosa. Este filme tiene buen guion que hace de la historia que sea fluida y no se volvieron tediosa. Además, el filme posee una gran cast, buena fotografía, banda sonora y más que podemos resaltar de la producción. Para mí es un 10/10, 100% recomendable.
