"Eyes Wide Shut": Stanley Kubrick's Last Film, and Also an Ode to Erotic Cinema [ENG/ESP]
In 1999, Stanley Kubrick, renowned author, screenwriter, photographer and film director, made his last film; known by its original title as "Eyes Wide Shut". The original cast included Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as the protagonists of a story that, through Kubrick's genius, fulfils a multi-functionality of genres within the plot. In this sense, this film is as much a drama as it is a black comedy and erotic cinema, but its greatest feature is the incipient thriller narrative that accompanies it. A work of art that, unfortunately, does not enjoy the recognition it deserves and in this review, I will attempt to give it some deserved justice.
For those of you who may not know who Stanley Kubrick is, I can tell you that this wonderful American artist is responsible for cult films such as: "The Shining", "2001: A Space Odyssey", "Lolita", "Spartacus", "Full Metal Jacket", "The Killing", "An Orange Clockwork", among many other films that have been released in the last few years. among many other productions that have remained in the world's retina, but which have contributed an unquantifiable richness to cinema itself. Behind the genius of this multifaceted creator, there are shots that can never cease to be replicated everywhere. Thus we see "the Kubrick look", which is how it is known in the world of cinema, the detail shot of a character, usually disturbing, with latent violence and looking contemplative and at the same time, about to exert a shocking action for the plot?
En 1999, Stanley Kubrick, reconocido autor, guionista, fotógrafo y director de cine, realizó su última película; conocida por su título original como "Eyes Wide Shut". Dentro del casting original, estuvieron Tom Cruise y Nicole Kidman como los protagonistas de una historia que, a través del genio de Kubrick cumple una multifuncionalidad de géneros dentro de la trama. En este sentido, este film es tanto un drama, como una comedia negra y también cine erótico pero su mayor rasgo es la incipiente narrativa thriller que le acompaña. Una obra de arte que, infortunadamente, no goza con el reconocimiento que merece y que en esta review, haré el intento de darle algo de merecida justicia.
Quienes no puedan saber quién ha sido Stanley Kubrick, les cuento que este maravilloso artista estadounidense, es el responsable de cintas de culto como: "The Shining", "2001: A Space Odyssey", "Lolita", "Spartacus", "Full Metal Jacket", "The Killing", "An Orange Clockwork" , entre muchas otras realizaciones que han quedado dentro de la retina mundial, pero que han aportado al cine mismo, una riqueza incuantificable. Detrás del genio de este creador multifacético, están planos que jamás podrán dejar de ser replicados en todos lados. Así vemos, "la mirada Kubrick", que es como se le conoce dentro del mundo del cine al plano detalle de un personaje, usualmente perturbador, con violencia latente y que luce contemplativo y al mismo tiempo, a punto de ejercer una acción shockeante para la trama...
In this sense, understanding the atmosphere that surrounds the mind of this director is important in order to be aware of what he captures in each of the stories he develops in his very rich and substantial filmography. In "Eyes Wide Shut", the tone between the characters revolves around the slogan of infidelity (or its possible execution, rather). This simple but frequent plot idea is the cornerstone of the film. And it is there, when the psychology of the characters shows us (as viewers) the dangers of imagination and reaction to such an obvious trauma (the confession of a possible infidelity of one of the partners).
En este sentido, entender la atmósfera que rodea la mente de este director, es importante para al mismo tiempo tener consciencia de lo que plasma en cada una de las historias que desarrolla en su muy nutrida y sustancial filmografía. Y es que, en "Eyes Wide Shut" la tónica entre los personajes gira alrededor de la consigna de la infidelidad (o su posible ejecución, mejor dicho). Esta simple pero frecuente idea argumental, es la piedra angular de la película. Y es allí, cuando la psicología de los personajes nos muestra (a nosotros como espectadores) los peligros de la imaginación y la reacción ante un trauma tan evidente (la confesión de una posible infidelidad de uno de los miembros de la pareja).
This is used, wonderfully well, by Kubrick. Where at every moment they are not suggesting, as the director and creator of both the script and the general direction, that nothing is so simple and bearable, although perhaps it is common and frequent. Under this premise, we can observe the mind disrupted after such an impacting "damage" and how the psyche itself tries to deal with it. A man, generally, does not have the remotest idea of what is behind the eroticism, sensuality and sexuality of a woman. And I say this in a very responsible way. I am not trying to make allusions to anyone, but one of the most masterfully executed plot twists in this film is precisely that, where the other protagonist reveals the degree of sexual and non-romantic desire that a woman can experience and yearn for.
This paradigm break within the regularity of conventional cinema is a hallmark of Kubrick. He has always focused on substance, well-understood polemic and, above all, on the finesse of existentialist philosophy. A marriage is the quintessential symbol of fidelity and growth for any couple. Nevertheless (even in the year in which this film was shot) the divorce rate was rising year after year all over the world. Thus, marking a trend that was undeniable then and curiously still is. In addition, many films with a similar plot tend to stick to the superficial characteristics of the action and do not delve into the emotional richness of the participants and those affected...
Esto lo usa, maravillosamente bien, Kubrick. Donde a cada instante no están sugiriendo, como realizador y creador tanto del guión como de la dirección general, que nada es tan sencillo y llevadero, aunque quizá sí sea común y frecuente. Bajo esta premisa, podemos observar la mente trastocada después de un "daño" tan impactante y cómo hace la propia psique para intentar solventarlo. Un hombre, generalmente, no tiene la más remota idea de lo que está detrás del erotismo, sensualidad y sexualidad de una mujer. Y digo esto de manera muy responsable. No intento hacer alusiones a absolutamente nadie, no obstante, uno de los giros argumentales más magistralmente llevados a cabo en esta cinta es precisamente ése, donde la otra protagonista, revela el grado de deseo sexual y no romántico que una mujer puede llegar a experimentar y a anhelar.
Esta ruptura de paradigma dentro de la regularidad del cine convencional es una marca distintiva de Kubrick. Que siempre se ha centrado en la sustancia, la polémica bien entendida y sobre todo, en la fineza de la filosofía existencialista. Un matrimonio, es el símbolo por antonomasia de la fidelidad y el crecimiento de cualquier pareja. No obstante (incluso para el año donde esta película fue filmada) los porcentajes de divorcios no dejaban de superarse año tras año en todo el mundo. Marcando así, una tendencia que era innegable entonces y curiosamente aún sigue siéndolo. Además, muchos films que tienen un argumento similar, suelen quedarse con las características superficiales de ésa acción y no ahondan en la riqueza emocional de los participantes y afectados...
For this reason, what a priori seemed to be a simple film for the audience to understand, suddenly begins to question the moral points of what we understand as something that is right (and acceptable and understandable) and what is not. Thus, the first emotion that comes over us is discomfort. But not one where it is unbearable to continue watching the film, no. Rather, a kind of discomfort where it is untenable to continue watching the film. Rather, it is a kind of questioning that goes straight to the deepest beliefs that are generally instilled in us from our earliest childhood, and that remain with us until adulthood and define what we want and what we don't want when we couple.
Por este motivo, lo que a priori parecía ser una cinta sencilla de comprender para la audiencia, de pronto empieza a cuestionar los puntos morales de lo que entendemos como algo que está bien (y es aceptable y entendible) y lo que no lo es. De este modo, la primera emoción que nos invade es la incomodidad. Pero no una donde sea insostenible poder seguir mirando la película, no. Sino, más bien, una especie de cuestionamiento que va directo a las creencias más profundas que, generalmente, son inculcadas desde la más remota infancia, y que permanecen con nosotros hasta la adultez y definen lo que deseamos y lo que no al momento de emparejarnos.
From my point of view, this film is the best performance of both Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. In spite of the good films that both have been able to star in long after (or before) having been involved in "Eyes Wide Shut". Musically, the composition we can hear is a blow to the chest and to the senses. It paralyses the darkness of the notes that come to us. A great sustenance between what we are witnessing as witnesses of this story that has 4 genres within a duration of just over 2 hours (2 hours and 30 minutes). Moreover, we see how Cruise's character, despite his professional success and his more than favourable economic position, begins to walk a path full of sadness, sexual passion, surprise, panic and catharsis.
It is also a feature film that brings viewers a constant sense of frustration, some fear and a lot of hedonism. Personally, I wouldn't say that its creator (Stanley Kubrick) is a convinced feminist. But at least, from what he proposes as a plot in this wonderful ode to erotic cinema and thriller, I consider that there is a notable contribution to the perspective on women, and above all on how to never neglect the "flame" that "ignites" any possible relationship between couples. A very common neglect, and that seems futile, it is not usually too deepened... Both outside and inside the cinematic aspect, this subject is a sore that still remains open in many other sub-themes up for discussion.
Desde mi óptica, este film es la mejor interpretación, tanto de Tom Cruise como de Nicole Kidman. Incluso, a pesar de buenas películas que ambos han sabido protagonizar mucho después (o antes) de haber sido partícipes de "Eyes Wide Shut". Musicalmente, la composición que podemos escuchar es un golpe al pecho y a los sentidos. Paraliza la oscuridad de las notas que llegan a nosotros. un sustento genial entre lo que estamos presenciado como testigos de esta historia que tiene 4 géneros dentro de una duración de poco más de 2 horas (2 horas y 30 minutos). Además, vemos cómo el personaje que caracteriza Cruise, a pesar de su éxito profesional y su posición económica más que favorable, empieza a transitar un camino lleno de tristeza, pasión sexual, sorpresa, pánico y catarsis.
También es un largometraje que trae a los espectadores una sensación constante de frustración, algo de miedo y mucho hedonismo. Personalmente, no diría que su creador (Stanley Kubrick) sea un feminista convencido, nada que ver. Pero al menos, desde lo que plantea como argumento en esta maravillosa oda al cine erótico y el thriller, considero que existe un aporte notable para la perspectiva en torno a la mujer, y sobre todo a cómo jamás descuidar la "llama" que "enciende" toda posible relación entre parejas. Un descuido muy común, y que parezca fútil, no suele profundizarse en demasía... Tanto fuera como dentro del aspecto cinematográfico, este tema es una llaga que aún permanece abierta en muchos otros subtemas a disposición de debate.
On the other hand, in parts of the film we can see how Stanley Kubrick takes one of the characters through a journey of understanding. That same action leaves this human being inside a cult. And in no exaggerated way, we can even witness a theme that is very much a theme of the affluent. Of those elite people who seem to be deeply dissatisfied with their lives, even though they have so much more than the common denominator of all of us. Depravity, excesses, a lot of consensual and not so consensual sex, violence and an endless number of aspects rich in darkness and lack of control, which, although they may seem too much to process, have a curious relevance to real events that we can see today.
Finally, the shots in this film are a metrical ode to Kubrick's perfection as a genius and auteur. There is no room for chance or waste of shots. Everything is categorically planned in order to give the viewer that sense of remarkable beauty but separating most of us socially and economically from the people in this brilliant film. Perhaps, this is a mark of the author and at the same time a denunciation where we can observe that not everything that "seems opulent, beautiful, neat and admirable" really ends up being so in its entirety. Let's recap: infidelity, sexual pleasure, panic, sadness, controversy and a lot of violence through the power of money, the keys to this story. "Eyes Wide Shut", beautiful, masterful but dark, don't forget it.
Por otro lado, en tramos de la película podemos observar cómo Stanley Kubrick lleva a uno de los personajes a través de un viaje de entendimiento. Esa misma acción, lo deja a éste ser humano dentro de una secta. Y de manera nada exagerada, podemos incluso ser testigos de un tema que es muy propio de las personas pudientes. De aquella élite de personas que parecen estar profundamente disconformes con sus vidas, aún teniendo muchísimo más que el común denominador de todos nosotros. Depravación, excesos, muchísimo sexo consensuado y como no tanto, violencia y un sinfín de aspectos ricos en oscuridad y descontrol, que aunque parezcan demasiado para poder procesar, guardan una curiosa relevancia con hechos reales que hoy podemos ver.
Finalmente, los planos de esta película son una oda métrica a la perfección de Kubrick como genio y autor. No hay lugar al azar o al desecho de tomas. Todo está categóricamente planeado para poder brindar al observante esa sensación de belleza notable pero separando social y económicamente a la mayoría de nosotros con los integrantes de esta genial cinta. Quizá, esto sea una huella del autor y al mismo tiempo una denuncia donde podemos observar que no todo lo que "parezca opulento, lindo, pulcro y admirable" realmente termine llegando a serlo íntegramente. Recapitulemos: infidelidad, placer sexual, pánico, tristeza, polémica y muchísima violencia a través del poder del dinero, claves de esta historia. "Eyes Wide Shut", bella, magistral pero oscura, no lo olviden.

El maestro Kubrick, lamentable su perdida cuando todavía tenia mucho por hacer. nos queda su obra para la eternidad, todas su filmografía es extraordinaria. No nombras una que a mi me gusta mucho: Barry Lyndon, esa película es hermosa, Kubrick uso iluminación natural para esa película.
Eyes wide Shut, el film que rompió el matrimonio Kidman Cruise jajaja. fascinante película sobre la duda, la infidelidad y como nuestra mente puede hacernos malas jugadas con ese tema, mezclados con esa parte de thriller , con el personaje de Cruise paranoico, sintiéndose vigilado.
El director tenia fama de obsesivo en documentales que vi, rodar con el podía convertirse en una pesadilla para el actor. pero es que los genios son así. 😆
Oye, @jcrodriguez, tienes razón. Kubrick podía llegar a ser un dolor de c... la gran mayoría del tiempo durante el rodaje. Esto lo atestiguaron cientos de actores que estuvieron con él en sus películas pero el resultado de tal nivel de exigencia lo podemos disfrutar aún hoy.
El nivel de calidad que nos legó es incuestionable. Realmente, era un autor en todo el sentido más estricto de la palabra. Es imposible ver una película de este sujeto y no dar con su sello característico.
Eyes Wide Shut es el final de una carrera que acabó bastante antes de lo que todos habríamos esperado. Y más, sabiendo que tenía proyectos en mente que habrían sido más que interesantes. Como el rodaje de otra peli adaptada de las novelas de S. King, o una historia bélica sobre el nazismo, entre muchas otras ideas que, infortunadamente, no vieron la luz del día a causa de su repentino fallecimiento.
Sin duda alguna, este sujeto es un genio total. Y como tal, he pretendido rendirle un más que modesto homenaje. Tanto a su figura como cineasta, así como a su mente creativa y detallista. Gracias por pasarte por aquí y dejar tu opinión, amigo.
