Peter Sutcliffe: The Yorkshire Ripper, The Summary Of A Disturbed Man [ENG/ESP]
In many respects, the victims of serious, heinous, violent crimes are often consigned to historical limbo. They are almost always discussed, with astonishing bestiality in detail, from the point of view of the perpetrator; of the perpetrator of the criminal acts. Now, something that Netflix, as a company, has done is precisely the opposite. Within their docu-series, specifically, in the Yorkshire Ripper but also in the Richard Ramirez docu-series, the aim is to show in a fairly well-narrated way the facts. But there is a precious emphasis on the point of view of those who suffered from the acts of these psychopaths.
En muchos aspectos, las víctimas de crímenes fuertes, atroces, violentos, suelen pasar al limbo histórico. Casi siempre se habla, con una bestialidad en detalles asombrosa, desde el punto de vista del victimario; del autor de los hechos criminales. Ahora bien, algo que ha hecho Netflix, como empresa, es precisamente lo opuesto. Dentro de sus docu-series, específicamente, en la del Destripador de Yorkshire pero también en la de Richard Ramírez, en objetivo es mostrar de un modo bastante bien narrado los hechos. Pero existe un énfasis precioso en el punto de vista de aquellos que sufrieron por los actos de estos psicópatas.
Relatives, friends, survivors, relatives, witnesses, investigators, police, psychologists. In other words, it is a compendium of opinions and versions that aims to show the real damage they have left behind. Beyond the crimes themselves... An ethical lesson, which from my point of view is admirable. If there is any self-criticism, it should go in that direction. I understand that those of us who haven't lived through something like this, or don't know anything similar, are entertained by these events, but the idea is to show what human evil is capable of. This is what we see as viewers, even if the context is horrifying.
However, Netflix shows in this documentary series a remarkable aesthetic expertise and narrative resources. That is undeniable. If anything is not going to happen to you while watching this production, it is that it reaches a point that is dense, heavy, boring, nothing to see? Quite the contrary, it is gripping, meticulous, well-ordered and above all critical. And for those who do not know the story of Peter Sutcliffe, who turned out to be the Yorkshire Ripper, the protagonist of this docu-series, it may be unbelievable to see the facts as they are presented.
Familiares, amigos, sobrevivientes, allegados, testigos, investigadores, policías, psicólogos. Es decir, es un compendio de opiniones y versiones que tiene como objetivo mostrar el daño real que han dejado. Más allá de los crímenes en sí... Una lección ética, que desde mi punto de vista es admirable. Si hay algo de autocrítica, debería ir por ese rumbo. Entiendo que quienes no hemos vivido algo así, o no conocemos nada similar, estos hechos nos entretengan pero la idea es mostrar lo que la maldad humana es capaz de hacer. De esto se trata, esto es lo que vemos como espectadores aunque el contexto sea horrendo.
Ahora bien, Netflix muestra en ese seriado documental una pericia estética y de recursos narrativos notable. Eso es innegable. Si algo no les va a pasar mientras estén viendo esta producción es que llegue a un punto denso, pesado, aburrido, nada que ver... Todo lo contrario, es atrapante, meticulosa, bien ordenada y sobre todo crítica. Y es que, para aquellos que no conocen la historia de Peter Sutcliffe, quien resultó ser el Destripador de Yorkshire, protagonista de esta docu-serie, quizá les resulte increíble ver los hechos tal cual son presentados.
The truth is, English criminal history is littered with serial killers; especially after the end of the Second World War. There were notable killers from the 1960s well into the early years of the new millennium. In this regard, let's remember that what made Sutcliffe so famous was the sheer number of victims he disembowelled.... And yes, literally, he was a sort of Jack The Ripper killer/copy. He frequented the red light district of the northern English city of Leeds, fraternised with high profile criminal women (prostitutes, women who plied the trade to make up the month) and then murdered them on esplanades or vacant lots with viciousness and unconscionable violence.

Hubo notables asesinos desde las décadas del 60's hasta bien entrados los primeros años del nuevo milenio. En este sentido, recordemos que lo que hizo tan famoso a Sutcliffe fue el número total de víctimas que destripó... Y sí, literalmente, era una especie de asesino/copia de Jack El Destripador. Frecuentaba la zona roja de la ciudad de Leeds, al norte de Inglaterra, fraternizaba con mujeres de alto perfil criminalístico (prostitutas, mujeres que ejercían el oficio para completar el mes) y luego en explanadas o terrenos baldíos las asesinaba con saña y violencia desmedida.

Moreover, Sutcliffe's own dementia was linked to a compulsive desire for control and domination. A clear example of the twisted minds that murderous psychopaths often have.
Recall that many psychopathic killers often attribute, as part of a complex and almost always absurd way of justifying their previous crimes, the origin of everything to "God". That is, in the case of Peter William Sutcliffe, while working as a gravedigger in a crazy cemetery, according to him (it should be noted) one night he heard a voice calmly and quietly ordering him to start killing. Curious fact, he never told him which types of people to kill. On the contrary, as a man of short stature, thin, not very physically graceful, he chose with an astonishing predetermination to dismember, mutilate and dismember women who did not raise so many social murmurs. Un compendio, una síntesis de un hombre que estaba claramente perturbado. Pero que a diferencia de otros asesinos famosos, como Dahmer, el aspecto psiquiátrico no juega un papel siquiera relevante. Todo lo opuesto, a decir verdad. Es más, la propia demencia de Sutcliffe estaba ligada a un deseo compulsivo de control y dominación. Un claro ejemplo, de las mentes retorcidas que los psicópatas asesinos suelen tener.
Recordemos, que muchos asesinos psicópatas suelen atribuir, como parte de una compleja y casi siempre absurda manera de justificar el andar previo de sus crímenes, a "Dios" el origen de todo. Es decir, en el caso de Peter William Sutcliffe, al trabajar como sepulturero en un cementerio loca, según él (cabe destacar) una noche oyó una voz que le ordenaba de manera tranquila y calmada empezar a asesinar. Dato curioso, nunca le dijo a cuáles tipos de personas matar. Al contrario, él como hombre de estatura baja, delgado, no muy agraciado físicamente, eligió con una predeterminación asombrosa descuartizar, mutilar y desmembrar mujeres que no levantaran tanto murmullo social. Al fin y al cabo, siempre desde la perspectiva de la época, ¿quién extrañaría a una prostituta?

En principio, las autoridades policiales y los detectives, no prestaron demasiada atención, principalmente por el perfil de las víctimas (error, garrafal) y en segundo lugar, una vez más, y en concordancia a lo que decía John Douglas, (pionero criminalista en la investigación y clasificación de asesinos seriales) el Destripador de Yorkshire no estaba loco ni era un psicótico desordenado que actuaba por impulsos violentos exclusivamente. Lo que hizo lo hizo con planificación, con ciertos conocimientos de criminalística y sobre todo conscientemente.
The authorities were absurdly fooled by Sutcliffe's failure to understand how the mentality of this type of serial killer worked. Let's not forget that the events took place in the late 70's and early 80's, at a time when many of the techniques we recognise and are familiar with today were in their infancy, or did not exist at all. That, plus police incompetence and a lack of rigour in the selection of possible suspects, paved the way for this deranged man to be so lucky for so long.
For those who don't know, and it's a fact that is NOT in the whole docu-series, catching the Yorkshire Ripper was the biggest creation of an investigative unit in the history of the UK. I mean, it wasn't that they didn't want to catch him, on the contrary, they simply couldn't do it quickly. Criticisms, cartoons and newspaper articles can still be found, attacking the police and investigative work in the face of the failure to catch this criminal. An unusual occurrence in relatively modern times.
Las autoridades se vieron absurdamente burladas por Sutcliffe al no comprender bien cómo funcionaba bien la mentalidad de este tipo de asesinos seriales. No olvidemos que los hechos ocurrieron a finales de los 70's y principios de los 80's, en una época donde muchas de las técnicas que hoy reconocemos y nos son familiares estaban en pañales, o no existían del todo. Éso, más la incompetencia policial y la falta de rigor en la selección de posibles sospechosos, allanaron el camino para que este desquiciado tuviera tanta suerte por tanto tiempo.
Para quienes no lo sepan, y es un dato que NO está en toda la docu-serie, atrapar al Destripador de Yorkshire supuso la mayor creación de una unidad de investigación de la historia del Reino Unido. Es decir, no era que no lo querían coger, al contrario, sencillamente no pudieron hacerlo rápidamente. Aún se pueden encontrar críticas, caricaturas y artículos de prensa, que atacan las labores policiales y de investigación ante el fracaso de atrapar a este criminal. Un hecho insólito en tiempos relativamente modernos.
Finally, I recommend paying close attention to the narrative and forensic details of this Netflix docu-series. There, you will find a richness seldom seen before in this kind of scathing and criminal genre. They are also of key plot importance in understanding many of the aspects that went into the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper. Obviously, I recommend these series created by the great streaming company, they are a gem to enjoy. But always remember to do it surrounded by adults, if there are children, it would be best to wait to watch it. It doesn't go as far as gore but it is thunderous and shocking.
Finalmente, les recomiendo prestar mucha atención a los detalles narrativos y forenses de esta docu-serie de Netflix. Allí, encontrarán una riqueza poco antes vista en este tipo de género mordaz y criminal. Y que además, tienen una importancia argumental clave para entender muchos de los aspectos que estuvieron inmersos en la búsqueda del Destripador de Yorkshire. Obviamente, recomiendo estos seriados creados por la gran compañía de streaming, son una joya para disfrutar. Pero siempre recuerden hacerlo rodeados de adultos, si hay niños, lo mejor serían esperar para verlo. No llega al gore pero es estruendoso e impactante.

This docu-series I haven't seen, I have it on my to watch list on netflix, I had forgotten about it, I've had it there for a while, the one I saw this week was another three episode docu-series The texas Killing Fields. It's also good, I recommend it.
