Roman J. Israel, Esq. : A Man of Principles, and A Masterful Critique of Materialism and The Dehumanisation of Law [ENG/ESP]
In a country and a society where success is measured by how many zeros your bank account has, or the designer of the suit you wear to the office, or the model of the car you drive, Roman J. Israel, Esq, a brilliant lawyer who with his partner William founded a law firm specialising in criminal law 40 years ago, decided to stay "behind the curtains".
Far from the naturalised furore and cruelty of the law's courtrooms. Focused on making real change to the American justice system. Someone with little or no social skills but with a deep empathy for the other, the fellow human being; not a client, but someone who deserves and should get the best possible legal defence.
En un país y una sociedad donde el éxito se mide en función de cuántos ceros posee tu cuenta bancaria, o el diseñador del traje que llevas puesto a la oficina, o el modelo del auto que manejas, Roman J. Israel, Esq, un abogado brillante que junto a su socio William fundó una firma de abogados que se especializa en el derecho criminal hace 40 años, decidió permanecer "detrás de las cortinas".
Lejos del furor y la crueldad naturalizada de las salas de los juzgados de la ley. Enfocado en hacer un verdadero cambio al sistema de justicia norteamericano. Alguien con pocas o casi nula habilidad social pero con una profunda empatía por el otro, por el semejante, el ser humano; no un cliente, sino alguien que merece y debe obtener la mejor defensa legal posible.
Denzel Washington is an actor who is used to giving life to mythical characters. Subjects that were written in a script, that only his way of understanding acting makes them essential for the correct tasting of the cinematographic art. In other words, the acting touch that Washington imbues his roles with is as good as, if not better than, the story itself.
In the case I am reviewing today, the film Roman J. Israel, Esq. is without a doubt a wonderful and perfect example of what I am talking about. The story has strength, plots and reflects the reality of a society obsessed with the most aberrant materialism but at the same time lacking creativity.
Denzel Washington es un actor que está acostumbrado a dar vida a personajes míticos. Sujetos que fueron escrito en un guión, que sólo su manera de entender actuación hace que sean imprescindibles para la correcta degustación del arte cinematográfico. Dicho de otro modo, el toque de actuación que le impregna Washington a sus papeles, es tan bueno como o quizá mejor, que la mis historia en sí.
En el caso que analizo hoy en esta review, la película Roman J. Israel, Esq es sin dunda una ejemplo maravilloso y perfecto de lo que digo. La historia tiene fuerza, argumentos y refleja la realidad de una sociedad obsesionada con el materialismo más aberrante pero que al mismo tiempo carece de creatividad.
To better understand this point, it is absolutely necessary to be able to find the person whose name is the same as the film. The psychology of the protagonist is not fully explained during the course of the film, but is developed by the contexts as the film continues. At the beginning we see him in his law firm, working on what he does best, i.e. preparing briefs and legal cases that his partner then has to present in court. We are also immediately introduced to his character. Strong but not violent, full of rational convictions and idealism about the practice of law, yet absorbed by a profession full of individuals who bill by volume and not by a sense of equality and ethics.
It all gets worse when Roman learns that his mentor, teacher and partner in the firm where they have both worked for years, has suffered a heart attack and is unconscious. It is under these circumstances that he must take on William's stipulated clients, and face the daily realities of the US justice system. Where, under the premise of agreements between the parties, the accused in a case are charged in an exaggerated and overcharged manner in order to subtly force them to accept sentences previously established between the accusing party and the party in charge of supposedly defending the citizen.
Para entender mejor este punto, es completamente necesario poder dar con el persona que se llama del mismo modo que la película. La psicología del protagonista no se explica del todo bien durante el transcurso de la película, sino que está desarrollada por los contextos que se van dando a medida que el film continúa. Al principio lo vemos en su firma de abogados, trabajando en lo que mejor sabe hacer, es decir en la preparación de escritos y casos legales que luego su socio tiene que presentar en corte. También se nos presenta de inmediato su carácter. Fuerte pero no violento, lleno de convicciones e idealismos racionales sobre el ejercicio del derecho, aunque absorbido por una profesión llena de individuos que facturan por volumen y no por sentido de igualdad y ética.
Todo se agrava cuando Roman se entera que su mentor, maestro y socio en su la firma donde ambos trabajan desde hace años, ha sufrido un ataque al corazón y está inconsciente. Es bajo esas circunstancia, que debe encargarse de los clientes que tenía estipulados William, y enfrentan la realidad diaria del sistema de justicia de los Estados Unidos de América. Donde, bajo la premisa de acuerdos entre las partes, se acusa de manera exagerada y con sobrecargos a los imputados en una causa para obligarles de manera sutil a aceptar condenar previamente establecidas entre la parte acusatoria y la encarga de supuestamente defender al ciudadano.
Aware of this fact, as he has tired of reading about it in writings, notions and legal records, he decides to confront a judge who overlooks the civil rights of Roman J's defendant, Israel, as he is presented at the preliminary hearing. He confronts the judge in the case, and the judge tells him that if he continues with his attitude he will have to hold him in contempt, which he does and is fined 5,000 USD, just for making a legal, logical and fair argument about a fact that is evidenced during the film. However, the way in which the film reflects the unimportance of those involved in criminal acts or sentences that end up in court is yet another example of the poor relationship between the real objective of the law and the system in charge of putting it into action.
Consciente de este hecho, pues se ha cansado de leerlo en escritos, nociones y registros legales, decide confrontar a un juez que pasa por alto los derechos civiles de un defendida de Roman J, Israel, mientras éste es presentado en la audiencia preliminar. Confronta al juez del caso, y éste le indica que si continúa con su actitud tendrá que declararlo en desacato; acción que continúa y es multado por 5.000 USD, solo por dar un argumento legal, lógico y justo sobre un hecho que se evidencia durante la película. Ahora bien, el modo en cómo la cinta refleja la poca importancia que tienen los implicados en hechos delictivos o sentencias que terminan en la corte, es un ejemplo más de la poco relación entre el objetivo real de la ley y el sistema encargado de ponerlo en acción.
Roman J, Israel, Esq. knows this, but he is also aware that it is an exhausting struggle. He himself started out as a student, a civil rights activist, and then dedicated his life (literally, not figuratively. He has never married, never made a home, and has no children) to try to fix the loopholes and injustices in the US legal system. In view of what happened to his partner William, the firm where he worked and barely managed to pay him 500 USD a week, has to close down and goes bankrupt. Leaving the protagonist unemployed and desperate for work, as he has been left with no direction in more than 40 years of professional career.
Denzel Washington's imprint on the film is absolutely inspirational. The American actor has a charisma of his own that is extremely difficult to match and, moreover, he is able to empathise with the character he plays in an admirable way. Making the audience watching the film able to understand the intricate, idealistic and tough mind of a lawyer, who although it may seem like fiction, tries to do what is ethically and morally valuable to him and to the profession to which he has dedicated his life. From my perspective, this is yet another reminder of the things we have sometimes naturalised as a society. Where a lot of absurd things are rewarded but the human value and above all, the real purpose of the actions we do, allow and transmit on a daily basis, are left aside. The kindness, the commitment and the conviction to do good without pretending to be perfect, is something I love about Roman J. Israel, Esq.
Esto lo sabe Roman J, Israel, Esq, pero también en consciente de que es una lucha completamente desgastante. Él mismo inició como estudiante, activista por los derechos civiles y luego ha dedicado su vida (literalmente, no figurativamente. Nunca se casó, ni formó un hogar ni tiene descendencia alguna) para trata de enmendar los vacíos e injusticias que tiene el sistema legal de los Estados Unidos. En vista de lo sucedido con su socio William, la firma donde trabajaba y a duras penas conseguía pagarle 500 USD semanales, tiene que cerrar y quiebra. Dejando al protagonista sin empleo y desesèrado por ocuparse, ya que así, de la nada se ha quedado sin rumbo en más de 40 años de carrera profesional.
La impronta que le transmite Denzel Washington es absolutamente inspiradora. El actor estadounidense tiene un carisma propio que es sumamente difícil de igualar y además, logra compenetrar con el personaje que interpreta de un modo admirable. Haciendo que la audiencia que mira la película pueda comprender la mente intrincada, idealidad y recia de un abogado, que aunque parezca ficción, intenta hacer lo que es ético y moralmente valioso para él y para la profesión a la que le dedicó su vida. Desde mi perspectiva, ésto es un recordatorio más de las cosas que a veces hemos naturalizado como sociedad. Donde se premian un montón de cosas absurdas pero se deja de lado el valor humano y sobre todo, el objetivo real de las acciones que hacemos, permitimos y transmitimos a diario. La bondad, el compromiso y la convicción de hacer el bien sin pretender ser perfectos, es algo que amo de Roman J. Israel, Esq.

Yo vi esta película y woow es como dices Denzen tiene un don maravilloso, este personaje sin duda es extraordinario la forma como le dio vida, la verdad a mi me dejo sorprendida porque es la primera vez que lo veo en una faceta como estas, las anteriores siempre ha sido como un hombre más rudo, pero en este caso es todo lo contrario. Le imprimió un realismo a este abogado impresionante, no recuerdo mucho la película pero si se que me encanto todo su trabajo.
Si deseas volver a verla, está en Netflix. Deberías recordar buenos y viejos tiempos. Pero sí, Washington es la película. Sin él y su asombrosa y humana actuación, el guión se cae. Denzel Washington es un actor increíble, de los mejores que podemos ver en pantalla, algo que admiro de este tipo de actores es su facilidad de adaptarse a los personajes y no solo interpretar, le dan vida y eso se transmite a través de la pantalla.

Gracias a ti por escribir en mi post y por dejar tu aporte. Y sí, la verdad es que D. Washington tiene esa cualidad, brindar interpretaciones profundas y pasionales. Pero en estos casos, cuando hay causas sociales y denuncias sobre un modo de vida nocivo e injusto, yo siento que es aún mejor todo lo que este actor pueda dar.
