When in 1945, after fire, sweat, megalomania, untold pain and siege, Germany finally surrendered (08/05/1945), it was the end of a horrible and extremely backward war era for Europe. Not only had the worst carnage in history been dispersed throughout the world (naturally, with much more aggravation in Europe) but the worst versions of humanity had been unleashed on subjects such as the protagonist of today's story: Joseph Mengele, the infamous "Angel of Death" of Auschwitz Birkenau, the most famous and terrifying concentration camp of all that Nazi Germany had on Polish soil during the Second World War. However, although this madness was tried and some of its leaders were executed, there remained many who simply fled and went about their lives as if nothing had (ever) happened.

This is the case in the Spanish-Argentine film "Wakolda". In Anglo slang, it was known as "The German Doctor". It tells the story through the eyes of a 12-year-old girl in southern Argentina. Precisely, in the Patagonia of the Rio de la Plata country. At a service station, on their way to the Antarctic area of that country, her family (the girl's family) meet a mysterious but captivating German man who asks them to go in a caravan from that place to the aforementioned destination. There, the story begins, and from the very first moment, the grim and thriller-laden scene foreshadows the evil that resides in this strange character.

Although the fascination with the war genre is commonplace in world cinema, especially in the Hollywood industry, it is no less true that few stories tell what happened to the thousands of people who made the Holocaust possible, the horror experienced by millions of people during only six years of war. In this sense, the name of the film comes from the name given by the girl's father to a doll he made for her. Throughout the duration of this film we can appreciate the underlying danger to people who are close to the doctor, and how he has not modified (in the slightest) the perversion that made him (unfortunately) so famous and outstanding.

Of course, the film is set in Argentina in the post-war years, and shows a young Joseph Mengele, almost intact to the classic record we may all have of him, in the famous photo of him smiling in his SS uniform, where the rank of hauptsturmführer (captain) can be seen alongside the German hierarchs who ran the worst death factory in human history. But back to the film review. The film deals with the influence of this German doctor on the girl's family, especially her mother, who is pregnant with twins, and the girl in question, who is twelve years old but suffers from growth problems as she does not reflect the size and weight she is supposed to be.

This doctor, captivated by the characteristics of the girl's family, is really curious and I would say obsessed with wanting to treat the little teenager. To the point of measuring her and communicating with her mother to offer to treat her and improve her condition. The latter agrees. However, not everything is rosy. At the school (German-Argentine) where the girl and her siblings study, there is an astute teacher who sees the girl's wandering and particular behaviour. To the point of becoming her friend and discovering that they have just met a strange doctor who is treating the little girl and offers to assist in her mother's case.

Intrigued, the teacher follows the girl while she is with the doctor (again, let's not forget that we are not talking about fiction but about Joseph Mengele) without him knowing anything about it, and realises the undeniable resemblance he bears to the infamous "Angel of Death" of Auschwitz Birkenau. What the film does not explain very well is that this woman is not only a Mossad spy stationed in the southern Patagonian town of Argentina, but that she was on duty (undercover, of course) in that town because they had suspected for years that these criminals had taken refuge in Argentina, as well as in other countries in the southern cone of South America.

Now, the rest of the synopsis, I'll keep it to myself because the idea is for you to watch it (and yes, it is available on Netflix) and judge for yourselves both the cinematography and the photography of this film. Also, like any literary adaptation, it does not escape the repeated criticism of suppressing details that are in the book and not in the film (I saw both. The film, as I read the book) but I'll tell you this: I think they have done a wonderful job. Honestly, for such a tense subject, the way it's portrayed on screen is more like a dramatic thriller and suspense than anything else. What I will highlight, however, is the treatment of evil that is reflected from the very moment the film opens. It is simply captivating how they have made it possible.

Moreover, to achieve the fluency of German and that elegant Spanish from the acting is worthy of a good casting director and the right financing. This is something that will blow your mind as soon as you see this film. The cast of actors and actresses is simply masterful. Also, the critique of Argentina at the time, where clearly the worst murderers of the time and of history, decided to go knowing full well that they would not only be protected by the state, but would enjoy total immunity from prosecution by authorities, Nazi hunters and foreign governments, for the heinous crimes they did in the past.

I would not like to leave this post without giving my final conclusion and impression of the evil that can be observed in this film. This theme is developed much better than me by Hannah Arendt, an incredible thinker, philosopher and academician who patented the term "banality of evil", and that in this film we can see without any difficulty. In it, we observe that no matter what the order, mission or authority, these subjects are really evil because they are convinced by a cause. Again, they do not limit the capacity to do harm, which they naturally have, just to satisfy their foulest and cruelest instincts. It is the conviction of the supremacist and misguided ideas they hold that define these personalities, and that is where Mengele fits perfectly.

Finally, if you want to see good cinema, and follow this story where you will find issues that will turn your stomach but will awaken your curiosity about how vile a human being can really be, and furthermore, you will witness the power of manipulation psychopaths like Mengele often have to seduce, convince their victims and subsequently damage them irreparably. In this sense, it is a pity that this kind of cinema of the highest excellent value enjoys so little notoriety. We have all seen "Life is Beautiful" and could quote whole lines from that film, but when it comes to cinema from anywhere other than Hollywood, we do have a number of shortcomings. A pity, absolutely. See Wakolda, recommended.

Vean Wakolda, recomendada.
