Hello Hive! Today I want to share this series called The Discovery of Witches. This was another show I had on my list for quite some time. Now Netflix has it available for us to watch. I was not sure how bringing magic into science in a modern context would work, but it is usually worth giving it a chance and watching it. So, I just finished season one, and I wanted to share my impressions with you.

No estaba seguro de cómo funcionaría la magia en la ciencia moderna, pero suele valer la pena darle una oportunidad y verla. Acabo de terminar la primera temporada y quería compartir mis impresiones con ustedes.

The Discovery of Witches is based on the All Souls Trilogy books written by Deborah Harkness. They are about a woman named Diana, who is a witch by birth but refuses her powers and legacy. That was until she came across a very ancient and important book, "The Book of Life." This random event unfolds a sequence of actions and actors, all involved in finding that book for their own reasons. The most important actor is a vampire named Matthew Clairmont, and he becomes deeply involved with Diana as the story progresses.

El Descubrimiento de las Brujas se basa en la Trilogía de Todas las Almas, escrita por Deborah Harkness. Tratan sobre Diana, una mujer bruja de nacimiento que rechaza sus poderes y su legado. Esto fue así hasta que encontró un libro muy antiguo e importante: "El Libro de la Vida". Este evento fortuito desencadena una secuencia de acciones y actores, cada uno involucrado en la búsqueda de dicho libro por sus propios motivos. El actor más importante es un vampiro llamado Matthew Clairmont, quien se involucra profundamente con Diana a medida que avanza la historia.

In this universe, Daemons, witches, and vampires have coexisted in the shadows, hidden from humankind. They have developed an organization called "The congregation," which attends to matters of species preservation and heritage. There is a thin balance between the species, and each one fights for power while seeking ways to eliminate threats. That is especially true for vampires, who are the main villains and antagonists of this story.

I think the story does a great job of placing mysteries in the beginning for us to feel the need to seek answers by watching the episodes. Who is Diana truly? What is that book, Ashmole 782? What happened to Diana's parents? What can each species do? This is not an action series; it is more about solving these mysteries, following character development, and enjoying the rewards of assembling a story completely.

En este universo, demonios, brujas y vampiros han coexistido en las sombras, ocultos a la humanidad. Han desarrollado una organización llamada "La Congregación", que se ocupa de la preservación y el patrimonio de las especies. Existe un delicado equilibrio entre las especies, y cada una lucha por el poder mientras busca maneras de eliminar las amenazas. Esto es especialmente cierto en el caso de los vampiros, los principales villanos y antagonistas de esta historia.

Creo que la historia logra un excelente trabajo al plantear misterios desde el principio, para que sintamos la necesidad de buscar respuestas al ver los episodios. ¿Quién es Diana realmente? ¿Qué es ese libro, Ashmole 782? ¿Qué pasó con los padres de Diana? ¿Qué puede hacer cada especie? Esta no es una serie de acción; se trata más bien de resolver estos misterios, seguir el desarrollo de los personajes y disfrutar de las recompensas de construir una historia completa.

The scenery brings us some charm from European landscapes, and this one is particularly silent, cold, and unchanging. It exhibits old architecture mixed with modern details. We are taken from Oxford, England, to Venice, Italy. On the other hand, the magic in this story has decent effects, not abundant though. Since Diana has refused her powers, her road is more about learning what happened to her and how to finally use them. We see some Witch wind and fire, Vampire fangs and speeds, yet Daemons don't show anything special. We also witness some witch's rituals and enchantments.

El paisaje nos trae el encanto de los paisajes europeos, y este es particularmente silencioso, frío e inmutable. Exhibe arquitectura antigua mezclada con detalles modernos. Nos transporta de Oxford, Inglaterra, a Venecia, Italia. Por otro lado, la magia en esta historia tiene efectos decentes, aunque no abundantes. Dado que Diana ha rechazado sus poderes, su camino se centra más en descubrir qué le sucedió y cómo usarlos finalmente. Vemos viento y fuego de brujas, colmillos y velocidades de vampiros, pero los demonios no muestran nada especial. También presenciamos algunos rituales y encantamientos de brujas.

This story is also about love. Diana and Matthew connect beyond the barriers of their species. This gives an aura of Beauty and the Beast and Romeo and Juliette. It is supposed to be an impossible, forbidden love, and the characters fight against the current to protect it. I personally enjoy this pattern, but it sometimes feels forced or overworked. Also, the time to develop it was not that long for us to feel it is well established.

Esta historia también trata sobre el amor. Diana y Matthew conectan más allá de las barreras de su especie. Esto le da un aire de La Bella y la Bestia y Romeo y Julieta. Se supone que es un amor imposible y prohibido, y los personajes luchan contracorriente para protegerlo. Personalmente, disfruto de este patrón, pero a veces se siente forzado o demasiado trabajado. Además, el tiempo de desarrollo no fue tan largo como para que sintiéramos que está bien establecido.

Sadly, season one provides very few answers to the mysteries introduced at the beginning, and it only raises more questions, like, What is a weeber? What happened to Matthew's vampire father? Why did Diana's parents make specific choices? Fortunately, there are two more seasons of this series in which we might find answers to both old and new mysteries. As a fan of fantasy, I definitely recommend watching this show. It showcases European scenery, includes elements of love and fantasy beloved by fans, offers good character development and mystery-solving dynamics, and of course, features magic. I'll continue watching seasons two and three and share my thoughts on them soon.

Lamentablemente, la primera temporada ofrece muy pocas respuestas a los misterios presentados al principio y solo plantea más preguntas, como: ¿Qué es un weeber? ¿Qué pasó con el padre vampiro de Matthew? ¿Por qué los padres de Diana tomaron decisiones específicas? Afortunadamente, hay dos temporadas más de esta serie en las que podríamos encontrar respuestas a misterios antiguos y nuevos. Como fan de la fantasía, definitivamente recomiendo ver esta serie. Muestra paisajes europeos, incluye elementos de amor y fantasía que los fans adoran, ofrece un buen desarrollo de personajes y dinámicas de resolución de misterios, y, por supuesto, incluye magia. Seguiré viendo las temporadas dos y tres y pronto compartiré mi opinión.
