Getting Over the "Ick" and More in Nobody Wants This - Season 1 |EN-ES|

A regular romance? in NETFLIX? Yeah, it is kind of impressive to find something like this in that service. Most of the time, shows are out of the norm there, which is why people like that platform so much. Nonetheless, the usual romantic comedy suits everybody well. Nobody Wants This seems to deliver. I had a great time watching, and here I share my insights after season one, with season two recently available.

¿Una comedia romántica normal? ¿En Netflix? Sí, es bastante sorprendente encontrar algo así en esa plataforma. La mayoría de las series son originales, y por eso les gusta tanto. Sin embargo, las comedias románticas clásicas suelen gustar a todo el mundo. Nadie quiere esto parece cumplir con las expectativas. Me lo pasé genial viéndola, y aquí les comparto mis impresiones tras la primera temporada, ahora que la segunda está disponible.

The plot is about a major regular conflict between couples, beliefs. Starting a relationship outside your belief system can be daunting and usually not lasting. This show takes that premise to build a semi-funny romance between Joanne and Noah, one having a sex podcast and the other being a Rabbi. A severe case of opposite attraction, and all the perks and situations that can come with that. In terms of actors, I have an old appreciation for the protagonists. Joanne is played by the legendary Kristen Bell from the old show Veronica Mars. Addam Brody plays Noah and brings the nostalgia for the show The O.C., and the fitting of him in relationship roles is quite accurate.

La trama gira en torno a un conflicto recurrente entre parejas: las creencias. Iniciar una relación fuera del propio sistema de creencias puede ser intimidante y, por lo general, no dura. Esta serie parte de esa premisa para construir un romance con toques de humor entre Joanne y Noah, uno con un podcast sobre sexo y el otro siendo rabino. Un caso extremo de atracción entre polos opuestos, con todas las ventajas y situaciones que esto conlleva. En cuanto a los actores, siento una gran admiración por los protagonistas. Joanne es interpretada por la legendaria Kristen Bell, de la antigua serie Veronica Mars. Addam Brody interpreta a Noah y evoca la nostalgia de la serie The O.C., y su interpretación en este rol es bastante acertada.

Being a Fan of Romantic comedies, you want these special moments that stay. While no memorable dialogues remained to me just yet, I do appreciate intense moments between the lovers as they navigate the implications of being together. Of course, we also need sidekicks, and to that comes the brothers. Kristen's sister, Morgan, and Adam's brother, Sasha, both play a vital role in giving humor, creating chaos, or bringing peace to the storyline.

Como fan de las comedias románticas, uno busca esos momentos especiales que perduran. Si bien aún no he encontrado diálogos memorables, sí aprecio los momentos intensos entre los enamorados mientras lidian con las implicaciones de estar juntos. Por supuesto, también necesitamos personajes secundarios, y ahí entran los hermanos. La hermana de Kristen, Morgan, y el hermano de Adam, Sasha, juegan un papel fundamental aportando humor, creando caos o trayendo paz a la trama.

Now, the antagonism between talking about sex in a podcast and guiding religious services has no parallel. It is a top conflict. Moreover, Judaism is one of the toughest sets of beliefs, and one that has a low openness to conversion. Coming from a religious Family, I can relate to the conflict and the future of a relationship as it becomes something more serious. The topic of conversion appears inevitably because it is related to major events in life, like marriage and having children.

Ahora bien, el antagonismo entre hablar de sexo en un podcast y dirigir servicios religiosos no tiene parangón. Es un conflicto de gran magnitud. Además, el judaísmo es uno de los sistemas de creencias más rígidos y poco abierto a la conversión. Al provenir de una familia religiosa, comprendo este conflicto y el futuro de una relación cuando se vuelve más seria. El tema de la conversión surge inevitablemente porque está relacionado con eventos importantes de la vida, como el matrimonio y tener hijos.

My favorite moment from this season is about the "ick." What characters describe with that word is a feeling of rejection because of the blind crush phase passing. You start noticing things in the person you are dating that are not pleasant, and frequently, they are quite the opposite. Joanne takes this as a cue for leaving the relationship, yet she overcomes the "ick" after talking about it with Noah. I think that it is an important subject to reflect on camera because current generations are highly exposed to unprofessional, one-minute relationship advice on social networks. These can surely increase the appearance of the ick if misused, which I think is a frequent scenario.

Mi momento favorito de esta temporada es el del "asco". Los personajes describen con esa palabra una sensación de rechazo al pasar la fase de enamoramiento ciego. Empiezas a notar cosas en la persona con la que sales que no te gustan, y con frecuencia, son todo lo contrario. Joanne lo interpreta como una señal para terminar la relación, pero supera el "asco" después de hablarlo con Noah. Creo que es un tema importante para reflexionar frente a las cámaras, porque las generaciones actuales están muy expuestas a consejos superficiales y poco profesionales sobre relaciones en las redes sociales. Estos consejos, si se usan mal, pueden aumentar la sensación de "asco", lo cual, en mi opinión, sucede con frecuencia.

I wonder if this show will provide the magic formula to make couples from opposite worlds like these work. At least, I hope some ideas will help to figure things out when you connect with someone so different from you. In any case, while this story unfolds, I am enjoying the moments with the ex, the families, the job compromises, the craziness, and the balances after some serious storms. I wish for season two to improve and bring us a higher level of romance and comedy for this story.

Me pregunto si esta serie nos dará la fórmula mágica para que funcionen parejas de mundos tan opuestos como estas. Al menos, espero que algunas ideas ayuden a entender cómo funciona la relación con alguien tan diferente. En cualquier caso, mientras se desarrolla la historia, disfruto de los momentos con la ex, las familias, las concesiones laborales, la locura y el equilibrio que se logra tras las tormentas. Espero que la segunda temporada mejore y nos traiga un mayor nivel de romance y comedia.
