This is a show I had pending on my list for quite a long time. It has been years since its release, with a cancellation during season 2, but still, I wanted to watch it. Carnival Row is a series that blends fantasy tales from Northeast Europe with the cultural context of the Industrial Revolution in England. It can be discouraging to start watching a show doomed after a short period, yet I wanted to see this combination of elements converge into a new world and how stories were told. I just finished the first season, and these are my thoughts about the series.

Maybe it is because I grew up reading fairy tales with my mother, or perhaps growing up in a house of old, British books around me, but I love fantasy stories involving fairies, magical forests, different fantastic creatures, and a British environment. My mother and I went through all the Grimm Brothers' fairy tales before I even attended primary school. Thus, my curiosity for creations such as this series is always high. Carnival Row brings the theme of Fay (fairy people) into a past contemporary world and mixes it in a realistic-ish approach.

The story is about ancient creatures (called Critchs, for short) leaving their lands as a war between two empires unfolded. Many sought refuge in a city named the Burgue. Fay refugees arrive here and always concentrate in a place called Carnival Row, where pleasure, addictions, mystic arts, and secrets abound. From the beginning, we follow the story of Vignette, a fay who helped others of her kind to flee lands occupied by The Pact (one of the nations at war). She arrives at the Burgue only by a miracle and starts her life there. Soon she finds out the man whom she loved, mourned, and thought was dead, Philo, was alive as a police inspector in the Row.

La historia trata sobre criaturas ancestrales (llamadas Critchs, para abreviar) que abandonaron sus tierras al estallar la guerra entre dos imperios. Muchas buscaron refugio en una ciudad llamada Burgue. Las hadas refugiadas llegan aquí y siempre se concentran en un lugar llamado Carnival Row, donde abundan el placer, las adicciones, las artes místicas y los secretos. Things get complicated when strange assaults and murders start to happen in the best Agatha Christie style. Soon, things evolve from ordinary murder to magical prevention of a prophecy. In the middle of it all, we also discover several characters' traditions among fay and critchs, intolerance among peoples, and even some love.

La situación se complica cuando comienzan a suceder extraños asaltos y asesinatos al mejor estilo de Agatha Christie. Pronto, la historia evoluciona de un asesinato común a la prevención mágica de una profecía. En medio de todo esto, también descubrimos las tradiciones de varios personajes entre hadas y criaturas, la intolerancia entre los pueblos e incluso algo de amor.

I have to point out that the quality of Effect is high for a series, and I read it sadly contributed to its cancellation. The budget was high, and although it was well received by the audience, it didn't make enough impact to keep the project. Yet, I do enjoy fairies with well-done wings, nice creature makeup, great ambience, and high camera cinematics.

Each chapter reveals a little bit of mystery; it is just the right amount to keep us interested and watching. The end provides the satisfaction and reward of understanding everything about the mysteries and the main characters while leaving everything prepared for a major conflict in the Burgue: a possible civil war between Critchs and humans. It is hard not to draw some parallels with today's conflicts with migrants and wars around the world. I think it invites reflection, especially around cultural diversity and tolerance.

Debo señalar que la calidad de Effect es alta para una serie, y leí que, lamentablemente, contribuyó a su cancelación. El presupuesto fue alto, y aunque tuvo una buena acogida entre el público, no tuvo el impacto suficiente como para mantener el proyecto. Aun así, disfruto de las hadas con alas bien logradas, el buen maquillaje de las criaturas, la gran ambientación y las excelentes escenas cinematográficas.

In the end, I recommend this series. It is a well-rounded story that won't leave you hanging if you only see season one. It has a bit of everything to keep you interested and invested. I hope it keeps that way during season two, and who knows, maybe the project is reactivated in the future.
