Vikings - The Saga of all Sagas |EN/ES|

For some reason, I have always been attracted to stories from ancient times like Romans, Greeks, old Europe, pirates, you name it. There is a special tendency to look for the times of swords and bows. Maybe that is me partly influenced by the Lord of the Rings and similar fantasy stories, or me as a small child who read Grimm brothers' fairy tales. What is certain is that these types of shows entertain me a lot.

Scandinavian stories fit that taste of mine. Their mythology has permeated many media products like videogames, movies, tv shows, music, fashion, and more. Vikings is a tv series based on the movement, battles, and colonization of Nordic people from current Noruega to north Europe specially the UK, France and some of the Mediterranean. Historically, Vikings were migrating people defining their lives partly in the sea and partly on lands.

The first thing I noticed about the series is that it has six seasons. I like that because there is not much peril of show cancellation as it tends to happen on Netflix. It also speaks of how the show did in terms of popularity which aims to be good enjoyable content. Now, the series started in 2013 and lasted up to 2020. The plot is constructed around a character named Ragnar Lothbrok who both in real history and in the show builds a name by having a vision of what Vikings must strive for.

I can't help but to look at connections with the real facts between what is presented in the show and what it is known as history. The character of Ragnar is indeed famous in the Scandinavian ancient folklore, and his sons as well including Ivar the Boneless who for a minute I thought was just a fictional character. The method for navigation that Ragnar implements in the show is only known to be used by Saxons, but again the show introduced it as something Ragnar learned from a "traveler."

You gonna have blood, rituals, battles, navigation, conquest, betrayal and more with this story. I must admit I enjoyed better the development of the first four seasons. In those, you See how Ragnar, his wife Lagertha, and others characters like his friend Floki, the Saxon Priest Athelstan, his fist son Bjorn, and even his brother Rollo, they all have interesting developments. It truly shows growth for all of them. Ragnar gains his name by taking the Vikings up to conquest and raid the lands of Wessex, Northumbria, Mercia, and East Anglia. With him, his supporters build a name, get combat fame, and plot their own futures in hunger for power.

It is also nice to see the jump in quality in the show. In the first three seasons it is noticeable the restrictions in budget. You can deduct that first by looking at the amount of men who play the battles. Those combat companies are expensive, and so very little amount of men played important fights while being called "armies." It all gets better in the fourth and fifth season as combats are more diverse, longer, intricate, insightful, with full display of armies and boats, and more strategy reflective.

Things to Love in Vikings

The bonding between Ragnar and Athelstan. They just connect in ways you never expect alongside the show. It always brings tension among the Vikings that his leader has in such high regards a Christian priest. The figure of Athelstan never finds a proper place except alongside Ragnar in my opinion.

The pride of Lagertha: The development of this woman is impressive. She goes through so much just to earn power built with a shield. She stood proud against any evil actions against her including the cheating of her husband, the imprisonment with another Jarl, the robbery of their lands, the establishment in Wessex, and so many other occasions. I loved her final moments in the show, and I value them more than those of Ragnar. She defeats her last enemy using only her broken shield. You won't see anything more badass than that in the show. She forged a true legend.

Raid of Paris. There is not a more large scale combat that the one at Paris. It is true that Vikings reached and raided the city of Paris in our story. Now, it didn't happen as it is portrayed in the show, but what a lot of fun in war. Each movement promises a more clever option that the previous one. The is a prolonged tension, factions trying to gain favor, and even prophecies being fulfilled. It is really a celebration of Ragnar's vision.

The seer. The whole show is build on inference based on prophesy. There is a presence of a character named "the Ancient one" who guides Vikings in the old ways and foreshadow their destinies. Even dough it might result repugnant to the audience, the reason I love the presence of the seer in the show is because it plays with the spectator's capacity to anticipate an outcome. Once you hear a prophesy, your mind tries to find clues about it becoming true somehow. That is a great tool for entertainment because the moment your inferences come to happen, you probably pronounce "I knew it!" and feel rewarded by the outcome.

The grasp of history. There are just fragments of history hidden or applied in the show to make it reflect actual old times. I love the familiarity we gain with the old lands, places, and travels the characters perform. Those are real places in our world and true Scandinavian lands. I also like small details like the navigation device, the vestiges of Rome in Wessex, the raids of France, the inclusion of Danes in England, the attempts of Wessex to unify the lands, among others. Of course many of those details were not presented as Historians suggest them, but it gives you a nice idea. One thing that is very different is the combat style. Vikings were known to fight primarily with a shield and secondarily with an axe or sword. There were some critiques about this, but I guess a sword entertains more than a shield. It doesn't in my opinion.

The games for the throne. IT is always fun to see how people fight for power and influence. There is so much betrayal in this show, it is hard to believe in humanity. Nonetheless, it is possible things were like that in the past and many betrayals happened. It is intriguing to see the next move one character makes to gain power and wonder if such move will succeed.

I will only share one thing I didn't like about the series, and it is the development of Ragnar and his sons in the 2 last seasons. The death of Ragnar was so weird and confusing. It almost makes no sense. It is also introduced very sudden as apparently the sons were given more protagonism. Normally, one would like a refresh in the lead of a show, but the stories of the sons are so messy and confusing I almost stopped watching. The development goes in so many ways for them than building a profile of their personality and intentions is really hard.

It took me months to complete Vikings, and overall it was a great long story to connect with the past, know more of the world, enjoy fights, anticipate outcomes, and ship storylines and characters. I do recommend it, and as they say, Skol!

It is pretty creepy the way everyone is ignoring what is happening to me and still going to Hivefest. Lay the dirty snatches out why dont ya. Fake it all you want creeps, its so obvious the blind eye you are turning. @fyrstikken told me what V2K and RNM was before they turned it on for me. Around that time he introduced me to @roelandp . I still have the emails between myself and @roelandp . This chain is centralized by design and @fyrstikken helped set it all up to fuck everyone, one by one, slowly into my situation. This is no joke you dumb mother fuckers, they shock you to your thoughts..... Hello????? It is in store for everyone you fools and your helping. Voices pulsed in your head and shocks to your thoughts??? Ignore me and help fuck innocent people for life? @roelandp and other top witnesses I know are involved with @fyrstikken.. Wait until people find out you conspired to enslave them with this shit. I am not crazy and you know it. they are doing this shit to me and told me what it mother fucking was BEFORE THEY TURNED IT ON! Your acting like naive children or maybe you are just part of the problem? You look like sociopaths. Everyone should unplug from HIVE until they are caught, .your. celebrating and ignoring my obvious, you look like fools. You know who is doing it....they are trying to kill me with it. The Havana Syndrome is real too you slave trading V2K, RNM enabling fuckers. Arrogantly play ignorant you Creeps, your setting the table for trafficking and total enslavement. I did not know I was circumvented until a year after I was…..People here will be nice until it’s too late. There is no way to stop it once they have you. Grow the fuck up, this is not aliens, gods, celebrities or a medicate-able mental concern. It is 100% electronic and beast as fuck. You do not want this shit. https://ecency.com/fyrstikken/@fairandbalanced/i-am-the-only-motherfucker-on-the-internet-pointing-to-a-direct-source-for-voice-to-skull-electronic-terrorism ..... https://ecency.com/gangstalking/@acousticpulses/electronic-terrorism-and-gaslighting--if-you-downvote-this-post-you-are-part-of-the-problem

One thing I hated about the series is that Ragnar dies and converts to Catholicism, these screenwriters went too far out of their minds.

avatar

I didn't like his death either, although producers respected what we know about the true death of Ragnar. He becoming christian came out of nowhere!
