Over the past weekend, I was scouring the platforms in search of a movie that showed something light. After a while, I came across a post that talked about a movie that was getting attention on NETFLIX. This movie was starring Taraji P. Henson. When I saw the synopsis of the movie I understood that it was a remake of one that had starred Mel Gibson years ago.
Since I like Taraji P. Henson's work, I decided to see if there were any other movies on the platforms, and I came across "Hidden Figures", titled in Spanish "Talentos Ocultos".
Hidden Figures is a film based on true events that tell the story of three African-American women who worked at NASA in the 1960s and contributed to the success of the U.S. space program.
The film is a tribute to the intelligence, determination, and perseverance of these women, who had to confront the racism and sexism of the time to prove their worth as mathematicians, engineers, and scientists. They were the computers of those times.
In the leading roles, we find Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe, who respectively play Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, the protagonists of this inspiring story.
The performances of the three actresses manage to convey the personality, emotion, and talent of their characters with naturalness and charisma. Also worth mentioning is the fine work of the rest of the cast, which includes Kevin Costner (Dances with Wolves), Kirsten Dunst (Mary Jane in Spider-Man), and Jim Parsons (Sheldon Lee Cooper in The Big Bang Theory).
The historical setting recreates with fidelity and detail the era of the 1960s, both in the scenery and in the costumes and music. The film shows the contrast between scientific and technological progress and the social and racial discrimination that prevailed in those times.
The film's message vindicates the role of women and minorities in the history of science and technology and invites reflection on the importance of education, teamwork, and the dream of bettering oneself.
However, the film also has some negative aspects that detract from its credibility and originality. Among them, I can point out that the film shows several scenes in which Katherine Johnson has to run several kilometers to go to the black women's restroom. It takes her 40 minutes to go to the bathroom. This seems to me to be an exaggeration.
The film is not something out of this world, but I can assure you, it kept me in front of the screen throughout its duration.
In conclusion, Hidden Talents is an entertaining and inspiring film, which stands out for the performances of its protagonists and for its historical setting. However, it is also a conventional and simplistic film. It is a recommended film to have a good time and learn something about the history of NASA, but not to expect a masterpiece of cinema.

En el fin de semana pasado estuve revisando las plataformas en búsqueda de una película que mostrara algo ligero. Después de un rato, me encontré con una publicación que hablaba de una película que estaba llamando la atención en NETFLIX. Esta película era protagonizada por Taraji P. Henson. Al ver la sinopsis de la película entendí que era un remake de una que había protagonizado Mel Gibson años atrás.
Como me agradan los trabajos de Taraji P. Henson, decidí ver si había alguna otra película en las plataformas, y me encontré con “Hidden Figures”, titulada en español como “Talentos Ocultos”.
Talentos Ocultos, una película basada en hechos reales que narra la historia de tres mujeres afroamericanas que trabajaron en la NASA en los años 60 y contribuyeron al éxito del programa espacial estadounidense.
La película es un homenaje a la inteligencia, el empeño y la perseverancia de estas mujeres, que tuvieron que enfrentarse al racismo y al sexismo de la época para demostrar su valía como matemáticas, ingenieras y científicas. Eran las computadoras de esos tiempos.
En los papeles principales encontramos a Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer y Janelle Monáe, que interpretan respectivamente a Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan y Mary Jackson, protagonistas de esta historia inspiradora.
La actuación de las tres actrices logran transmitir la personalidad, la emoción y el talento de sus personajes con naturalidad y carisma. También hay que mencionar el buen trabajo del resto del reparto, que incluye a Kevin Costner (Bailando con lobos), Kirsten Dunst (Mary Jane en Spider-Man) y Jim Parsons (Sheldon Lee Cooper en The Big Bang Theory).
La ambientación histórica recrea con fidelidad y detalle la época de los años 60, tanto en los escenarios como en el vestuario y la música. La película muestra el contraste entre el progreso científico y tecnológico y la discriminación social y racial que imperaba en aquellos tiempos.
El mensaje de la película reivindica el papel de las mujeres y las minorías en la historia de la ciencia y la tecnología e invita a reflexionar sobre la importancia de la educación, el trabajo en equipo y el sueño de superarse a uno mismo.
Sin embargo, la película también tiene algunos aspectos negativos que le restan credibilidad y originalidad. Entre ellos, puedo señalar que la película muestra varias escenas en la que Katherine Johnson tiene que correr varios kilómetros para ir al baño de mujeres negras. Para ir al baño tarda 40 minutos. Esto me parece una exageración.
La película no es algo del otro mundo, pero puedo asegurar, que me mantuvo frente a la pantalla a lo largo de su duración.
En conclusión, Talentos Ocultos es una película entretenida e inspiradora, que destaca por las actuaciones de sus protagonistas y por su ambientación histórica. Sin embargo, también es una película convencional y simplista. Es una película recomendable para pasar un buen rato y aprender algo sobre la historia de la NASA, pero no para esperar una obra maestra del cine.
