Defending Jacob, one of the best series I've seen this year | Review [Eng / Esp]

I had days wanting to write this review, but between one thing and another I had not been able to complete it, not for that reason I would abandon it, it would be too unfair to one of the best crime drama series I've seen this year. There are series that depending on the plot you can watch them gradually, there are others that ask you for more, and there are series like Defending Jacob, so addictive, that they must be devoured mercilessly chapter after chapter.

Defending Jacob is an AppleTV production, another reference of the good material that Apple is producing in its bid to conquer the audiovisual segment. I had wanted to watch this series since its launch in late 2020, there were many arguments to catch my attention: the crime drama genre, the fact of being based on a novel that became a best-seller, and of course, the cast. Unfortunately, by then I didn't have my own subscription to the streaming network, so the wait took two years.

As soon as I started watching the series, I immediately felt connected with the story, when you are a parent it is easy to empathize with situations that jeopardize family peace. For any parent, children are sacred, we fully trust in the upbringing we have given them, in the values we have instilled in them, and we would never consider the possibility of seeing them involved in irregular acts, even less in criminal acts. However, the fact that we find it hard to believe does not mean that something like this cannot happen, does it?

Tenía días queriendo escribir esta reseña, pero entre una cosa y otra no había podido completarla, no por eso la abandonaría, sería demasiado injusto con una de las mejores series de drama criminal que he visto este año. Hay series que según la trama puedes verlas paulatinamente, hay otras que te piden más, y hay series como Defending Jacob, tan adictivas, que deben ser devoradas sin piedad capítulo tras capítulo.

Defending Jacob es una producción de AppleTV, otra referencia del buen material que está produciendo Apple en su apuesta por conquistar el segmento audiovisual. Había querido ver esta serie desde su lanzamiento a finales de 2020, eran muchos los argumentos para captar mi atención: el género de drama criminal, el hecho de estar basada en una novela que se convirtió en best seller, y por supuesto, el elenco. Lamentablemente para entonces no tenía una suscripción propia de la cadena de streaming, por lo que la espera se prolongó dos años.

Apenas comencé a verla, de inmediato conecté con la historia, cuando se es padre es fácil empatizar con situaciones que ponen en vilo la paz familiar. Para cualquier padre, los hijos son sagrados, confiamos plenamente en la crianza que les hemos dado, en los valores que en ellos hemos sembrado, jamás consideraríamos la posibilidad de verlos involucramos en hechos irregulares, menos aún, en hechos criminales. Ahora bien, que nos cueste creerlo, no quiere decir que algo así no pueda llegar a ocurrir, ¿o sí?

Okay, let me put you in the context of what happens in Defending Jacob. Andy Barber, played by Chris Evans, is a lawyer assistant district attorney investigating a murder that occurred in a park near his residence. The victim is a classmate of his son Jacob (Jaeden Martell). As the investigation progresses, the case takes a new twist that makes Jacob, his 14-year-old son, the main suspect in the crime, reason enough to remove him from office and assign the case to a new lawyer.

Bien, los pongo en contexto de lo que ocurre en Defending Jacob. Andy Barber, interpretado por Chris Evans, es un abogado adscrito a la fiscalía del distrito, que investiga un asesinato ocurrido en un parque cercano a su residencia. La víctima es un compañero de clases de su hijo Jacob (Jaeden Martell). Meanwhile, Andy and his wife Laurie (Michelle Dockery) focus on the defense of their son under the advice of a prominent and skilled lawyer who will try to convince the jury of Jacob's innocence, or at least get a favorable conviction. The days leading up to the trial are difficult for the family, they live closely with the public repudiation, the harassment of the media, and the condemnation of society for Andy's family's past. Despite the circumstances, they try to stay afloat and pretend a normal life.

Throughout the trial, Andy is confident in his son's confession of innocence, has no doubts about him, and devotes his time and efforts to investigating possible suspects who might divert attention from his son. His wife Laurie, on the other hand, is overcome with doubt, Jacob's behavior, his conduct, and his emotional reaction to the facts disturb her. For her, evidence to the contrary may reveal a hidden truth.

Mientras tanto, Andy y su esposa Laurie (Michelle Dockery) se enfocan en construir la defensa de su hijo, bajo la asesoría de una destacada y habilidosa abogada que intentará convencer al jurado de la inocencia de Jacob, o al menos conseguir una sentencia con una condena favorable. Los días previos al juicio son difíciles para la familia, viven de cerca el repudio público, el acoso de los medios de comunicación, y el rechazo de la sociedad por el pasado familiar de Andy. A pesar de las circunstancias, intentan mantenerse a flote y simular una vida normal.

Durante todo el proceso, Andy se muestra confiado en la confesión de inocencia de su hijo, no alberga dudas sobre él, dedica su tiempo y esfuerzos en investigar posibles sospechosos que puedan desviar la atención que se centra en su hijo. A su esposa Laurie, en cambio, la invade la duda, el comportamiento de Jacob, su conducta y su reacción emocional ante los hechos, la perturban. A truly dramatic series, infused with intense and addictive suspense that hooks you from the very first episode. Defending Jacob is by far one of the best series I've seen this year, and have I watched a lot of them lately. I loved enjoying this other side of Chris Evans, the image of the funny, handsome, and nice guy, is left behind, here gives way to another side of his staging, for me, one of the best of his career. Of Jaeden Martell's performance, not to mention, he managed to give life to a boy who lives absorbed in himself, in his loneliness, in his silence, in his own darkness; what Jaeden achieved with Jacob, makes the difference in the story.

Una serie verdaderamente dramática, impregnada de un intenso y adictivo suspenso que engancha desde el primer capítulo. Defending Jacob es por mucho, una de las mejores series que he visto este año, y vaya que he visto muchas últimamente. Amé disfrutar de esta otra faceta de Chris Evans, la imagen del chico divertido, guapo y simpático, queda atrás, aquí da paso a otra cara de su puesta escena, para mí, una de las mejores de su carrera. De la actuación de Jaeden Martell, ni hablar, logró dar vida a un chico que vive absorto en sí mismo, en su soledad, en su silencio, en su propia oscuridad; lo que Jaeden logró con Jacob, marca la diferencia en la historia.

In the 8 chapters that the series lasts, until the last minutes, you will question everything. You'll doubt everything, and suddenly you'll say wow, I didn't see that coming! The ending leaves the door open for the next season, which as far as I know, is not confirmed, but could tell us much of what remains to be deciphered. I can't wait to read the book that inspired this series, I think I'll be able to get a lot of answers there.

Los 8 capítulos que dura la serie, hasta los últimos minutos, te cuestionarás todo. Dudarás de todo, y de repente dirás ¡wow, no lo vi venir! El final, deja abierta la puerta para una siguiente temporada, que hasta donde sé, no está confirmada, pero podría contarnos mucho de lo que queda por descifrar. Estoy ansiosa por leer el libro que inspiró esta serie, creo que allí podré conseguir muchas respuestas.

Personally, beyond the fact that I loved the series for the genre itself, which is one of my favorites, the series struck a sensitive chord in me as a mother. We love our children, we would give everything for them, and we fully trust in the being we have raised and educated; however, the reality is that when they leave the protection provided by the wings of mom and dad, they face a new world, a world that can be very cruel, and that somehow leads them to forge a character that gives them security, confidence, and personality. Unfortunately, in this process of self-recognition, the response they find in their environment is not always the most adequate.

En lo personal, más allá de que me haya encantado la serie por el género en sí que representa, que es de mis favoritos, la serie tocó una fibra sensible en mí como madre. Amamos a nuestros hijos, daríamos todo por ellos, confiamos plenamente en el ser que hemos criado y formado; sin embargo, la realidad es que cuando salen de la protección que brindan las alas de papá y mamá, se enfrentan a un nuevo mundo, un mundo que puede llegar a ser muy cruel, y que los conduce de alguna manera a forjarse un carácter que les de seguridad, confianza y personalidad. Lamentablemente, en ese proceso de autorreconocimiento la respuesta que hallan en su entorno no siempre es la más adecuada.

If you have the chance to watch this series, don't miss it, I recommend it with my eyes closed. I don't think I've been this pleased with a series like this since I saw Mare of Easttown.

Si tienen la posibilidad de ver esta serie, no dejen de hacerlo, se las recomiendo con los ojos cerrados. Creo que no me sentía así de complacida con una serie de este tipo desde que vi Mare of Easttown.
