Greetings, esteemed film, and series enthusiasts,
After a long time without sharing any reviews, today I will do so with a miniseries that sparked my interest since its announcement, as it has all the necessary ingredients to captivate my attention: a true crime case.
I'm referring to the miniseries Love & Death, which premiered on HBO Max in late April and concluded in late May. In just 7 episodes, the miniseries condenses a criminal story that occurred over 40 years ago. It was in 1980 when a quiet suburb of Texas was shaken by a gruesome murder that would later inspire the book "Evidence of Love", written by John Bloom and Jim Atkinson, the same book that David E. Kelly dared to adapt and give rise to Love & Death in 2023.
Synopsis
The miniseries tells the story of Candace Montgomery, a housewife dedicated to her family, with two children and a good husband who provided her with a good social and economic position. Candy was an active member of the church, singing in the church choir and participating in its activities. She was a very sociable and pleasant woman who earned the affection and appreciation of her community.
Despite seemingly having everything to be happy, she did not feel fulfilled in her relationship. Pat, her husband, was a prominent engineer in a major company in the region and was a good companion, friend, provider, and father, but he was not a passionate lover. That's why Candy sought to revive her sexual life with her neighbor Allan Gore.
Allan, who was married to Betty, also experienced an emotional void in his relationship. His wife suffered from postpartum depression since their first pregnancy, and now she was pregnant again. Betty had a stress and depression crisis that made her irritable, frequently blamed Allan for his business trips. As often happens in many relationships, the routine also caught up with them. All of this led Candy and Allan to become secret lovers.
The extramarital relationship had certain conditions, such as avoiding emotional involvement, keeping the relationship secret, and avoiding at all costs that neither of them nor their respective partners, would be emotionally hurt. But as is often the case, lies cannot be hidden for long, and the truth always comes out, especially in relationships where reason does not dominate over the heart. Both Pat and Betty found out, paradoxically, when the romance between Candy and Allan seemed to have already ended. At that moment, both marriages seemed to have overcome their problems and internal crises.
However, jealousy does not understand extemporaneity. On June 13, 1980, Betty confronted Candy about her affair with her husband, and that unleashed a massacre. What followed was a gruesome murder with 41 axe blows. A motive and incriminating evidence. A plea of self-defense. And, finally, a final verdict.
Opinion
Now, it is time to share my impressions about this case. Not from a criminal point of view, because I am not a criminologist, nor from a psychiatric or psychological perspective, as it is not my specialty either. My opinion is personal and is based on the multiple interpretations I have given to the story written by Kelly. This opinion may be debatable, but it will not change my perception of the subject.
I will begin by discussing the theme that triggered everything: infidelity.
Can a person who seemingly has it all risk it all for sexual satisfaction alone? Yes, Candy did not feel attended to, neither sexually nor emotionally, by Pat. There was a lack in their relationship that made her feel dissatisfied. Pat preferred sitting and watching television programs instead of conversing and intimately connecting with his wife. So, yes, Candy had many things, but evidently, she lacked something important in a romantic relationship.
Continuing with this, can complaints and routine bore a relationship? Yes, anyone would get tired of so much negativity and living in perpetual complaint. Also, living without excitement, repeating the same pattern every day, also wears out a relationship. Betty's stress and depression daily affected her relationship with Allan, but even more harmful was her strict attachment to routine. Betty detested changes and experienced new things.
Am I justifying infidelity with the above? No, never. In fact, I condemn infidelity. I believe that when you reach a point where you don't feel good about your partner, you should talk about it, and if there is no solution, it is healthier to end the relationship. Candy and Allan sought outside what they did not have in their marriages. Monotony kills. Perhaps if they had had those secret encounters in cheap hotels with their own partners, in an exciting role-playing game, the flame of passion would not have been extinguished.
Another notable theme in this story is closely related to emotions and mental health per se. During the trial, when presenting the defense arguments and even those of the prosecution, it becomes clear how certain psychological traumas carried from childhood can influence our adult lives. It also demonstrates how the brain can activate the defense system when we feel threatened, acting more out of survival than reason. At this point, I can imagine @liveofdalla masterfully explaining how the sympathetic nervous system works.
The psychological and psychiatric aspects are crucial in this case. Mentioning that a person's conscience can separate from their personality, in what is known as a dissociative reaction, proved decisive in the final verdict of the jury.
Finally, another aspect that I found very relevant and that provides valuable motivational lessons, despite the context, was the defense's performance during the trial. Lawyer Don Crowder took on a complex case without being a specialist in criminal law. He took the risk even though everything was against him. He daringly ventured with passion for what he did. Using remarkable strategies, he managed to show the jury not only the other side of the story but also skillfully sold a more humane image of the accused person. From my point of view, his performance was brilliant.
In the 80s, Crowder showed courage by taking on a case contrary to the majority opinion. He used the power of the media and relied on image and body language to persuade. He skillfully appealed to the humanity of the jury. He built a bond of trust with his client. He did not deny the facts; he simply changed the argument. His focus was on winning, and he worked smartly to achieve it.
The Miniseries
Now, beyond the real story, let's talk about the miniseries itself. Brilliant! Elizabeth Olsen plays Candy Montgomery fascinatingly, and I sincerely hope her performance is recognized in the entertainment industry. I understand that there is a previous adaptation of the story, in which Candy is played by Jessica Biel, but I cannot comment on it as I haven't seen it. For now, I can only applaud Olsen. Overall, all the performances seemed top-notch, such as Jesse Plemons in the role of Allan Gore and Tom Pelphrey as lawyer Don Crowder.
It is difficult to say whether a series or film is good or bad when it is based on real events and involves a crime because the story is what it is and cannot be changed. Judging what happened doesn't change anything, but other aspects that make the audiovisual work worth watching and desiring can be appreciated. Honestly, this is one of the best miniseries I have seen this year. It's just 7 episodes that can be enjoyed in one or two days; I definitely recommend it. Available on Max, formerly HBO Max.

Me refiero a la miniserie Love & Death, que se estrenó en HBO Max a finales de abril y concluyó a finales de mayo. En tan solo 7 capítulos, la miniserie condensa una historia criminal que ocurrió hace más de 40 años. Fue en 1980 cuando un tranquilo suburbio de Texas se vio sacudido por un dantesco asesinato que más tarde inspiraría el libro "Evidence of Love", escrito por John Bloom y Jim Atkinson, el mismo que David E. Kelly se atrevió a adaptar para dar origen a Love & Death en 2023.
Sinopsis
La miniserie narra la historia de Candace Montgomery, una ama de casa dedicada a su familia, con dos hijos y un buen esposo que le proporcionaba una buena posición social y económica. Candy era una miembro activa de la iglesia, cantaba en el coro y participaba en sus actividades. Era una mujer muy sociable y agradable que se ganó el cariño y aprecio de su comunidad.

Opinión
Ahora bien, es momento de compartir mis impresiones sobre este caso. No desde el punto de vista criminal, porque no soy criminóloga, ni desde el punto de vista psiquiátrico o psicológico, porque tampoco es mi especialidad. Mi opinión es personal y está basada en las múltiples interpretaciones que he dado a la historia escrita por Kelly. Esta opinión puede ser debatible, pero eso no cambiará mi percepción del tema.
Comenzaré hablando del tema que desencadenó todo: la infidelidad.
¿Puede una persona que aparentemente lo tiene todo arriesgarse solo por satisfacción sexual? Sí, Candy no se sentía atendida ni sexual ni emocionalmente por Pat. Había una carencia en su relación que la hacía sentir insatisfecha. Pat prefería sentarse a ver programas de televisión en lugar de conversar e intimar con su esposa. Entonces, sí, Candy tenía muchas cosas, pero evidentemente le faltaba algo importante en una relación de pareja.
Siguiendo con esto, ¿puede la queja y la rutina aburrir una relación? Sí, cualquiera se cansaría de tanta negatividad y de vivir en una eterna queja. Además, vivir sin emoción repitiendo el mismo patrón todos los días también agota una relación. El estrés y la depresión de Betty afectaban diariamente su relación con Allan, pero aún más dañino era su apego estricto a la rutina. Betty detestaba los cambios y experimentar cosas nuevas.
¿Estoy justificando la infidelidad con lo anterior? No, nunca. De hecho, condeno la infidelidad. Creo que cuando llega un punto en el que no te sientes bien con tu pareja, debes conversarlo y, si no hay solución, lo más saludable es terminar la relación. Candy y Allan buscaron fuera lo que no tenían en sus matrimonios. La monotonía mata. Tal vez si hubieran tenido esos encuentros furtivos en hoteles baratos con sus propias parejas, en un excitante juego de roles , la llama de la pasión no se habría extinguido.
Otro tema destacable en esta historia tiene mucho que ver con las emociones y la salud mental per sé. Durante el juicio, al exponer los argumentos de la defensa e incluso los de la parte acusadora, queda claro cómo ciertos traumas psicológicos arrastrados desde la infancia pueden influir en nuestra vida adulta. También se demuestra cómo el cerebro puede activar el sistema de defensa cuando nos sentimos amenazados, actuando más por supervivencia que por razón. En este punto, puedo imaginar a @liveofdalla explayándose mientras explica magistralmente el funcionamiento del sistema nervioso simpático.
El aspecto psicológico y psiquiátrico es fundamental en este caso. Mencionar que la conciencia de una persona puede separarse de su personalidad, en lo que se conoce como reacción disociativa, resultó determinante en el veredicto final del jurado.
Por último, otro aspecto que me pareció muy relevante y que tiene valiosas lecciones motivacionales, a pesar del contexto, fue la actuación de la defensa durante el juicio. El abogado Don Crowder asumió un caso complejo sin ser especialista en derecho penal. Tomó el riesgo a pesar de que todo estaba en su contra. Se atrevió con audacia y pasión por lo que hacía. Utilizando estrategias destacables, logró mostrar al jurado no solo el otro lado de la historia, sino que vendió hábilmente una imagen más humana de la persona acusada. Desde mi punto de vista, su actuación fue brillante.
En los años 80, Crowder demostró valentía al asumir un caso contrario a la opinión mayoritaria. Utilizó el poder de los medios de comunicación y se valió de la imagen y el lenguaje corporal para persuadir. Apeló hábilmente a la humanidad del jurado. Creó un vinculo de confianza con su cliente. No negó los hechos, simplemente cambió el argumento. Su enfoque era ganar, y trabajó inteligentemente para lograrlo.
La Miniserie
Ahora bien, más allá de la historia real, hablemos de la miniserie en sí misma. ¡Brillante! Elizabeth Olsen interpreta a Candy Montgomery de manera fascinante, y sinceramente espero que su actuación sea reconocida en la industria. Entiendo que existe otra adaptación previa de la historia, en la que Candy es interpretada por Jessica Biel, pero no puedo opinar al respecto ya que no la he visto. Por ahora, solo puedo ovacionar a Olsen. En líneas generales, todas las actuaciones me parecieron de altura, como la de Jesse Plemons en el papel de Allan Gore y el de Tom Pelphrey como el abogado Don Crowder.
Es difícil decir si una serie o película es buena o mala cuando se basa en hechos reales y hay un crimen involucrado, porque la historia es lo que es y no se puede cambiar. Juzgar lo que sucedió no cambia nada, pero sí se pueden valorar otros aspectos que hacen de la obra audiovisual algo que valga la pena ver y que desees ver. Sinceramente, esta es una de las mejores miniseries que he visto este año. Son apenas 7 capítulos que se pueden disfrutar en uno o dos días, definitivamente la recomiendo. I couldn't agree more, especially in a relationship like marriage. I saw this miniseries on a streaming site but was debating whether it was worth watching or not. With your superbly written review, I'll definitely watch this soon. I've always admired Elizabeth Olsen since her performance as Wanda in the Marvel films. I'm sure she did great in this one. Estoy esperando que pase mas tiempo para verla, tengo muy fresca la mini serie disponible en Hulu: Candy, que cuenta el mismo hecho real, pero esa fue protagonizada por Jessica Biel, hice una reseña hace tiempo. Por supuesto, esta Love and Death al ser producción de HBO, debe tener un poco mas altos los niveles de calidad. En la otra Jessica Bel me aprecio que hace un gran trabajo y hasta busco parecerse físicamente a la verdadera Candy, veo en los fotogramas que le pusieron a Olsen un peinado diferente a la Candy real.
Si, supe de la versión de Hulu con Jessica Biel, de hecho lo menciono en el post. Yo no la he visto todavía. Esta versión me gustó, creo que la actuación de Elizabeth Olsen fue estupenda.

¡Me encantó total! La voy a a onotar Gorita, se ve espectacular para analizarla, pero sí las disociaciones pueden ocurrir en varias patologías psiquiátricas incluso en las que uno menos piensa como una depresión, así que hay que tener cuidado con los vecinos 😅😅.
Me encantó tu opinión de la infidelidad, pienso exactamente lo mismo, lo aborrezco, si no quieres a tu pareja hablenlo, intenten terapia, pero si de plano no funciona, es lo peor que se le puede hacer a una persona, la lastimaras demasiado emocionalmente y si está afectada ya puedes desencadenar algo peor peor.
Me quedo tranquila porque no hay tanta conexión psíquica jajaja mi post del viernes habla más es de por que ninguno debemos juzgar a otros tomando en cuenta de que, tal vez, ninguno tenga la razón.

Después de hacer esta reseña, me fui a ver la versión del mismo caso pero protagonizada por Jessica Biel. JC mencionó que su actuación fue espectacular, así que no lo dudé. Por cierto, está disponible en Star, en DisneyPlus.
Bien, aunque ambas series relatan una misma historia, lo hicieron con enfoques diferentes. Incluso hay diferencias con respecto a los tiempos en los que ocurrieron determinados eventos. Lo cierto es que en una se muestra una Candy poco empática, mientras que en la otra la muestran más humana.
Ahora, tipo Misión Imposible, tu misión es ver ambas miniseries para analizar las dos caras de Candy Montgomery.
