Hola #hivers y cinéfilos

Hoy vengo a contarles mi opinión sobre la última entrega de la saga de dinosaurios creada por Spielberg. Esta saga es entrañable para mi y para muchos de los que como yo crecimos con las películas de dinosaurios creadas por el genio de Spielberg, quizás es esa una de las razones por las que esta última entrega me descepción. Pero no creo que se tratara solo de que fuí victima de una trampa de la nostalgia, van mis argumentos.

Fórmula facilista

Esta nueva entrega va de un grupo de mercenarios que ingresan (ilegalmente) a una isla donde se hacían experimentos genéticos con el único objetivo de crear nuevas "especies" de dinosaurios. El objetivo, colectar ADN (sangre en realidad) de tres de los dinosaurios más grandes conocidos, destinado a desarrollar un medicamento para curar enfermedades humanas.

Aquí ya se puede ver claramente como desde el planteamiento mismo del argumento se buscan lugares comunes para llamar la atención del público. De un lado tenemos el Big Pharma violando la ley con el objetivo de patentar un medicamento que pudiera generar millones en ganancia. Y de otro tenemos el curioso hecho de que las muestras necesarias para lograr este medicamento milagroso solo se obtienen a partir de los animales más grandes de los que se tiene conocimento hasta la fecha. De un lado un intento de manipulación emocional del público y del otro la utilización de la espectacularidad y magnificencia de los sujetos de muestra para llamar la atención. Y hubiese estado bien si se hubiese desarrollado mejor la trama y los personajes. Pero el guión estuvo lejos de eso, obtaron por una estructura lineal con poco o ningún suspense del tipo "Dora la exploradora". Colecta 1, colecta 2, colecta 3 (Puente, Río, Casa de Dora) y listo. Dejando todo el peso de atractivo a las escenas de acción y persecución y a la espectacularidad de los reptiles incluidos en la trama.

Personajes superficiales

Sorprendentemente el personaje mejor desarrollado de la entrega es Xavier (el novio desagradable) que clasifica, como mucho, como un personaje secundario. Los personajes parecen clichés caricaturescos sin mayor profundidad de los que casi no sabemos nada. El ejecutivo desalmado del Big Pharma al que solo le interesa el dinero y el éxito y está dispuesto a sacrificar a todos excepto a si mismo. ¿Qué más abemos de él? nada, los mercenarios que proveen de músculo y carne de cañón, ¿tienen familia?, ¿como llegaron a ponerse a si mismos en esa posición?, ¿que los llevó a esa decisión?. El científico idealista enamorado de la ciencia y que solo busca el bien común y se ve arrastrado a la situación por las falta de financiamiento y el amor a su ciencia. Y una familia de vacacionantes cuya unica función en la película es servir de Oda a la Esperanza.

Apuesta por la nostalgia

Varias escenas son cláramente recicladas de las primeras entregas, la única diferencia es que ahora los dinosaurios son más grandes o más feos. Ejemplos:

Observación de grandes herbívoros pacíficos

Las escenas de caza y acecho

El uso de bengalas para atraer al Jefe Final

El uso de una cubierta claramente insuficiente como medio de supervivencia

La manipulación genética

Este es un tema recurrente y muy interesante desde la perspectiva de bioética, sobre todo en el contexto actual donde la clonación para traer a la vida copias de animales (mascotas y posiblemente animales extintos) es ya una realidad. El uso de este elemento en la trama, exclusivamente con fines de lucro para producir animales más expectaculares y aumentar los niveles de visita a los parques creaba la posibilidad de explotar las implicaciones y consecuencias de la manipulación genética. Pero fue completamente ignorado y sirve solamente como pretexto narrativo para presentar dos nuevos tipos de dinosaurios que si bien son más feos hasta ahí llegan sus méritos.

El Mutadón, es una especie de Velocirraptor con alas y en esteróides, que básicamente sustituye al velocirraptor en las mismas escenas ya presentadas en las primeras entregas.

Y el Distortus rex que resulta ser una especie de mezcla entre dinosaurio y xenomorfo con seis extremidades cuya función principal será la de sustituir al T. rex de la primera entrega, pero sin mayores méritos.

La caída de los grandes villanos

En esta nueva entrega los roles de villanos principales fueron entregados a los reptiles generados por manipulación genética. Sin embargo, los creadores decidieron mantener a los viejos conocidos. Hubiese sido mejor que decidieran eliminarlos de la película. Para mi fue doloroso ver como el gran T rex era incapáz de lidiar con una balsa inflable. Por otro lado, el velocirraptor, uno de los dinosaurios más avanzados, capaces de ataque coordinado, caza en grupo y hasta de utilizar estrategias de caza avanzada como la distracción y el cebo en las primeras entregas. Es completamente sorprendido y eliminado en esta nueva película sin poder cazar tan siquiera a un adolescente desprevenido.

La Familia milagrosa

La inclusión de una familia de civiles, que son arrastrados hasta la isla es para mí una decisión desafortunada. Esta familia de civiles con cero preparación, cero conocimiento y sin equipamiento, logra sobrevivir indemne en uno de los ecosistemas más inhóspitos posibles. Es un elemento que resta credibilidad y que por otra parte crea una trama paralela que poco o nada tiene que ver con la trama principal y que solo logra fracturar el hilo narrativo de la película.

Recomendación final

Si eres seguidor de la saga desde sus inicios y/o si buscas un producto que vaya más allá de tomas expectaculares, escenas de acción y animales terrorificos, entonces quizás sea mejor que pases de esta entrega.

Today I'm here to share my opinion on the latest installment of the dinosaur saga created by Spielberg. This saga is dear to me and to many others who, like me, grew up with the dinosaur movies created by the genius of Spielberg. Perhaps that's one of the reasons why this latest installment disappointed me. But I don't think it was just that I fell victim to nostalgia. Here are my arguments.

Easy formula

This new installment is about a group of mercenaries who (illegally) enter an island where genetic experiments were being conducted with the sole purpose of creating new “species” of dinosaurs. The goal is to collect DNA (actually blood) from three of the largest known dinosaurs, intended to develop a drug to cure human diseases.

Here we can clearly see how the plot itself seeks to use common tropes to grab the audience's attention. On the one hand, we have Big Pharma breaking the law in order to patent a drug that could generate millions in profits. On the other, we have the curious fact that the samples needed to create this miracle drug can only be obtained from the largest animals known to date. On the one hand, there is an attempt to emotionally manipulate the audience, and on the other, the use of the spectacular and magnificent nature of the sample subjects to attract attention. It would have been fine if the plot and characters had been better developed. But the script was far from that, opting for a linear structure with little or no suspense, like “Dora the Explorer.” Collection 1, collection 2, collection 3 (Bridge, River, Dora's House) and that's it. Leaving all the weight of appeal to the action and chase scenes and the spectacular nature of the reptiles included in the plot.

Superficial characters

Surprisingly, the best-developed character in the film is Xavier (the unpleasant boyfriend), who is at best a secondary character. The characters seem like caricatured clichés with little depth, about whom we know almost nothing. The heartless Big Pharma executive who is only interested in money and success and is willing to sacrifice everyone except himself. What else do we know about him? Nothing. The mercenaries who provide muscle and cannon fodder—do they have families? How did they get themselves into that position? What led them to that decision?. The idealistic scientist in love with science who only seeks the common good and is dragged into the situation by lack of funding and his love for his science. And a family of vacationers whose function in the film is to serve as an ode to hope.

A bet on nostalgia

Several scenes are clearly recycled from the first installments, the only difference being that now the dinosaurs are bigger or uglier. Examples:

Observation of large peaceful herbivores
The scenes of hunting and stalking

The use of flares to attract the Final Boss
The use of clearly inadequate shelter as a means of survival

Genetic manipulation

This is a recurring and very interesting topic from a bioethical perspective, especially in the current context where cloning to bring copies of animals (pets and possibly extinct animals) to life is already a reality. The use of this element in the plot, exclusively for profit to produce more spectacular animals and increase park visitation levels, created the possibility of exploring the implications and consequences of genetic manipulation. However, it was completely ignored and serves only as a narrative pretext to introduce two new types of dinosaurs that, while uglier, have no other merits.

The Mutadon is a kind of Velociraptor with wings and on steroids, which basically replaces the Velociraptor in the same scenes already presented in the first installments.

And the Distortus rex, which turns out to be a kind of mix between a T rex and a xenomorph, with six limbs, whose main function will be to replace the T. rex from the first installment, but without any major merits.

The fall of the great villains

In this new installment, the roles of the main villains were given to genetically engineered reptiles. However, the creators decided to keep the old familiar characters. It would have been better if they had decided to remove them from the film. It was painful for me to see how the great T-rex was unable to deal with an inflatable raft. On the other hand, the velociraptor, one of the most intelligent dinosaurs, capable of coordinated attacks, group hunting, and even using advanced hunting strategies such as distraction and baiting in the first installments, is completely surprised and eliminated in this new film without even being able to hunt an unsuspecting teenager.

The Miraculous Family

The inclusion of a family of civilians who are swept away to the island is, in my opinion, an unfortunate decision. This family of civilians with zero preparation, zero knowledge, and no equipment manages to survive unscathed in one of the most inhospitable ecosystems possible. It is an element that detracts from the credibility and, on the other hand, creates a parallel plot that has little or nothing to do with the main plot and only manages to fracture the narrative thread of the film.

Final recommendation

If you have been a fan of the series since its inception and/or are looking for a product that goes beyond spectacular shots, action scenes, and terrifying animals, then you might want to skip this installment.
