Today I write to you about the future. Okay, there's a bit of clickbait in that sentence, but it's essentially true. Turns out I just found out that Disney+ and FX announced the imminent release of the new version of Shogun as a TV series. This is news I receive with great joy as I am a big fan of this novel. In fact, it was one of the first topics I wrote about here on Hive when I was just starting out.
Origin
Shogun is originally a fictional novel written by James Clavel in 1975. It tells the story of John Blackthorn, the first English sailor to arrive in Japan in the 17th century, and how he became a Samurai. It is a novel that shows an intimate knowledge of the customs and cultures of feudal Japan. And it satisfactorily portrays the contradictions of a feudal society facing European influences and conflicts while dealing with its own internal contradictions. Apparently, the author was inspired by the real history of the rise to power of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu and his adviser William Adams (Toranaga and Blackthorn in the Novel).
Background
In 1980, this work was adapted for television in a miniseries of the same name that featured stellar performances by Richard Chamberlain as John Blackthorn, Toshiro Mifune as Toranaga Yoshi, and Yoko Shimada as Mariko Toda. The 1980 series was, in my view, an incomplete representation of the novel. Its major deficiency was the absence of most of the inner dialogues of the main characters, which in the case of John Blackthorn allows us to understand the tribulations and development of the character as he faces a completely strange reality to him. One cannot fully appreciate the character without understanding his musings and the mechanisms he seeks to adapt to a world that is completely hostile to him. As for Toranaga Yoshi, it is impossible to fully comprehend the depth of the character without his inner dialogues because precisely the character is built upon the importance of keeping strategies and intentions secret in a world of duplicity, intrigues, and betrayals. Therefore, there are things that the character can only say to himself.
The new version
The new version of the series has been produced by Disney+ and FX Network. The latter released the official trailer of the series on its YouTube channel around three months ago. The series will premiere on FX and Hulu on February 27th according to IMDB.

Cosmo Jarvis as John Blackthorn,
and Anna Sawai as Mariko Toda.
We'll have to watch it and form our own judgment, but it looks like a good TV product. I hope I've been able to draw your attention to this new release. As for me, I'm already excited to see what surprise it brings.

Hoy les escribo sobre el futuro.
Ok hay un poco de clickbait en esa oración, pero es esencialmente cierta. Resulta que recién me enteré que Disney+ anunció la inminente puesta a disposición del público de la nueva versión de Shogun en formato de serie de tv. Esta es una noticia que recibo con mucha alegría pues soy un gran admirador de esta obra. De hecho fue uno de los primeros temas sobre los que escribí acá en Hive cuando recién estaba comenzando.
Origen
Shogun es originalmente una novela literaria de ficción escrita por James Clavel en 1975. Cuenta la história de John Blackthorn el primer marinero inglés en llegar a Japón en el siglo XVII, y de cómo este se convirtió en Samurai. Es una novela que muestra un íntimo conocimiento de las costumbres y culturas del Japón feudal. Y retrata satisfactoriamente las contradicciones de una sociedad feudal que se enfrenta a la influencia y conflictos Europeos mientras lídia con sus propias contradicciones internas. Al parecer el autor se inspiró en la história real del ascenso al poder del Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu y su consejero William Adams (en la Novela Toranaga y Blackthorn).
Antecedente
En 1980 esta obra se llevó a la televisón en una miniserie homónima que contó con estelares actuaciones de Richard Chamberlain como John Blackthorn, Toshiro Mifune como Toranaga Yoshi y Yoko Shimada como Mariko Toda. La serie de 1980 constituyó, en mi criterio, una representación incompleta de la novela. Su mayor deficiencia fue la ausencia de la mayoría de los dialogos interiores de personajes pricipales. que en el caso de John Blackthorn permite conocer las tribulaciones y el desarrollo del personaje a medida que se va enfrentando a una nueva realidad completamente extraña para él. No se puede apreciar cabalmente el personaje sin entender sus cavilaciones y los mecanismos que busca para adaptarse a un mundo que le es completamente hostil. De parte de Toranaga Yoshi es imposible comprender a cabalidad la profundidad del personaje sin sus dialogos interiores, porque precisamente el presonaje está construido sobre la importancia de mantener en secreto las estratégias e intenciones en un mundo de dobleces intrigas y traiciones. De manera que hay cosas que el personaje solo es capaz de decirse a si mismo.
La nueva versión
La nueva versión de la serie ha sido producida por Disney+ y FX Network, este último publicó el trailer oficial de la serie en su canal de YouTube hace alrededor de tres meses. La serie se estrenará en las cadenas FX y Hulu el próximo 27 de febrero de acuerdo con IMDB.

De acuerdo con esta misma fuente en esta ocasión la puesta en escena será más fiel a la história original de James Clavel que la adaptación de 1980. Lo cuál puede ser tomado como un signo positivo. En concordancia con esto el trailer incluye textos de la novela que nunca fueron representados en la adaptación anterior.
Habrá que verla y formarse juicio propio, pero se perfila como un buen producto televisivo. Espero que les haya podido llamar la atención sobre esta nueva entrega. Yo por mi parte ya estoy ansioso por ver que sorpresa nos trae.
