The plot / La trama

Travis (Adrien Brody) is a peaceful man who is fired from his job at a nursing home and is desperately looking for a decent way to make a living. He attends an interview for a job where he must participate in a psychological experiment in a fictitious prison. There 20 men: 8 guards and 12 prisoners must live together for a period of 2 weeks following a series of rules. At first everything went well, but as the days passed, the experiment began to get out of control when the guards, led by Barris (Forest Whitaker) began to punish the prisoners to maintain order.

This film caught my attention because it deals with an experiment that has to do with human behavior that is carried out between guards and prisoners in a fictitious prison. The interesting thing about the plot is that for this, the organizers of the experiment selected 20 men, mostly peaceful people, with no criminal record, no problems with justice and who had always lived thinking that the best way in life is to be good and upright, and that the phrase "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth" should not be used, that is to say, to return evil with evil. Participants will be rewarded $1,000 for each day for a total of two weeks.

Some, like Barris, were believers and God-fearing and had never used violence to solve their problems.

Esta película llamó mi atención porque trata sobre un experimento que tiene que ver con la conducta humana que se lleva a cabo entre guardias y prisioneros de una cárcel ficticia. Lo interesante de la trama es que para ello, los organizadores del experimento, seleccionaron a 20 hombres, en su mayoría personas pacíficas, sin antecedentes penales, sin problemas con la justicia y que siempre habían vivido pensando en que el mejor camino de la vida está en ser bueno y recto, y que no se debe utilizar la frase de "ojo por ojo y diente por diente", es decir devolver mal con mal. La recompensa que recibirán los participantes será de 1000 dólares por cada día hasta un total de dos semanas.
Algunos como Barris, eran creyentes y temerosos de Dios y nunca habían utilizado la violencia para solucionar sus problemas.

The experiment begins by assigning each participant a role within the prison, they are provided with their guard or prisoner uniforms as appropriate, and the guards proceed to read the rules for everyone to follow.

Among the rules is one that says that at the slightest hint of the use of violence, the experiment will end and no one will receive the promised reward. In addition, the guards must be respected by giving orders and the prisoners are obliged to obey them.

This is precisely where the problems begin because everyone knows that it is an experiment and no one is willing to be mistreated, however the guards take their role very seriously because they know that if they fail they will not receive the promised money. The prisoners have no choice but to obey orders but always thinking about how to get out of the situation.

El experimento comienza asignando a cada participante un rol dentro del penal, se les dota de sus uniformes de guardias o presos según sea el caso y los guardias proceden a leer las reglas para que todos las cumplan.
Entre las reglas está una que dice que al menor indicio del uso de la violencia, el experimento terminará y nadie recibirá la recompensa prometida. Además los guardias deben hacerse respetar impartiendo las órdenes y los presos están obligados a obedecerlas.
Allí precisamente es donde comienzan los problemas porque todos saben que es un experimento y ninguno está dispuesto a recibir maltrato, sin embargo los guardias se toman muy en serio su papel pues saben que si fracasan no recibirán el dinero prometido. A los presos no les queda mas remedio que acatar las órdenes pero siempre pensando en la manera de salir librados de la situación.

This film highlights a reality that we all know: the environment in which we develop influences our behavior. A person, no matter how good, decent and respectful he may be, if he enters a prison where he is mistreated and insulted, sooner or later he will experience a moment of rupture that will cause radical changes in his behavior that will turn him into an aggressive being with a desire for revenge.

En esta película se pone en evidencia una realidad que todos conocemos: el medio dónde nos desarrollamos influye en nuestra conducta. Una persona por muy buena, decente y respetuosa que sea, si se interna en una prisión donde lo que recibe es maltrato e insultos, tarde o temprano experimentará un momento de quiebre que ocasionará cambios radicales en su conducta que lo convertirá en un ser agresivo y con deseos de venganza.

In conclusion / En conclusión

It is a good alternative to watch this film, where it is tested to what extent you can endure humiliations, without becoming a real killing machine and satiate their revenge.

It is a survival of the fittest and you can see the consequences of giving a little power to someone to see how little by little he transforms into something else, whose only desire is to quickly finish off his opponent.

The performances of Brody and Whitaker are excellent and there comes a moment in which each viewer is partial to the weakest, wishing justice to be done.

Es una buena alternaiva para ver esta película, donde se pone a prueba hasta qué punto se puede soportar humillaciones, sin convertirse en una verdadera máquina de matar y de saciar su venganza.
Es una supervivencia del más apto y se puede evidenciar las consecuencias de darle un poco de poder a alguien para ver como poco a poco se va transformando en otra cosa, cuyo único deseo es el de acabar rápidamente con el contrario.
Las actuaciones de Brody y Whitaker son excelentes y llega un momento en que cada espectador se parcializa con el más débil, deseando que se haga justicia
