The Flash Finale Review

Hello There! I know this is kind of late, and season 9 has been out for a little while by now. But I had to wait until it came to Netflix, and I just finished the last episode, so here we go!

Season 9 (The Flash) | The CW Wiki | Fandom

I have loved this show, even when it really got on my nerves. It was kind of one of my comfort shows. The Arrowverse isn't the best universe, and it's had it's ups and downs, but now that it's basically over, I know I'm going to miss it.

Now for the finale. Personally, I found it alright. It wasn't as good as it could've been, but I liked it. It did make me cry.

I am kind of annoyed with what they did with the villains. They brought back some of the greatest villains of the entire series (Reverse Flash, Zoom, Savitar), and then did nothing great with them. I did like them interacting and wish we got more of that, but they didn't even seem as much of a threat as they were in their respective seasons. I didn't particularly like Godspeed, but even he was toned down in the finale.

Also, why is Cecile so powerful? A few seasons ago, she was just an empath. Now she has telepathy, telekinesis, flight, what else am I forgetting? Look, Cecile's a good character, but they made her Barry level in the matter of a season with barely any training.

Another topic, while I know some people didn't like how Eddie was basically just talked out of destroying everything, I personally feel like that just works for the type of show this is. The Flash is a show about second chances. Most of the villains have a reason for what they do (ex: Savitar feeling forgotten by everyone), even the minor ones (ex: all the rogues really want is money, and they don't kill unless necessary). Having Eddie (who, let's remember, is a good person) being talked out of everything and giving him another chance is in the basics of the show. I mean, think of all the villains that have changed sides over the years (like Killer Frost, Captain Cold, and Heatwave).

I did kind of love Eddie's story in this season. He was a character I liked back in season one because he didn't just play the terrible boyfriend in the way of the main couple, but an actual good person and boyfriend who Barry was able to trust with his secret identity. This diversion of the classic love triangle trope is really a breath of fresh air. Plus, I really can't blame him for turning against Barry. I mean, he killed himself, only for it to not matter, and for the man he sacrificed himself for to marry the woman he loved. That's harsh. I feel they did his character justice, but that's just my opinion.

I'm also happy they brought Caitlyn back. She's one of my favorite characters (maybe one day I'll do a list of my top ten characters on here) and I missed her a lot. I'll admit, when Khione was leaving, I was literally saying to myself "I want Caitlyn back." Well, I got what I wanted! I do find it a little dumb how she came back, but I won't complain too much.

I do wish some other characters made appearances though, even just as cameos. Personally, I wanted Cisco to come back so much, along with maybe more Wally, or characters from other earth's (since the multiverse is apparently coming back) such as the Freedom Fighters on Earth X or Jesse Quick on Earth 2. Or maybe even Barry's little team of Rogues from the beginning of the season, aka Hartley/Pied Piper, Gold-face, and Jaco (for some reason I absolutely love these guys' characters, specifically Hartley since he was one of my favorite minor villains way back in season one). But we can't get everything we want I guess.

Having the series end with the birth of Nora was a great way to end the series. I also liked how Barry ended the show by striking people with lightning to give them speed, just like him. It came full circle. There was a lot of déjà vu like this, and it practically made me squeal and cry. But it was great to see that.

I do have one more problem however, though this is more about the season in general. The characters. I feel the characters specifically in season 9, were kind of bland and annoying. All my favorites left or lost screen time (I mean, I thought this was Barry's show, not Barry and friends). Mark (or Chillblaine) kind of annoyed me. I know he was in pain, but that's not too much of an excuse to treat Khione terribly and betray the team earlier in the season. Khione was kind of bland and I feel we didn't have enough time to get to know and like her before she became overpowered (I still don't understand how she's a goddess, it makes no sense). Cecile and Allegra were also kind of overpowered, though I didn't mind Allegra as much because she was still an alright character in my opinion.

Also, why does everyone on Team Flash need to be a superhero? Chester randomly got superpowers in the end. Allegra and Cecile both have them too. Mark and Iris are both fighters with weapons instead of powers. Back in the first few seasons, Team Flash did have powers, but Caitlyn was really just the doctor and Cisco only helped out if completely necessary in the field. Joe helped, but that's because he's a police officer, so it was kind of hard to not have him be involved. The Wells were smart, but only Reverse Flash had powers (and he wasn't even truly a Wells anyway). So why has this changed so much?

Anyway, I'm kind of glad the Flash ended in a good way, though I will miss it. I hope in some way we can see the guys again, whether in a spin-off show (just please don't make it about Cecile, I've seen a fake poster for that and I will literally die if it becomes real) or bringing at least Grant Gustin (the Flash/Barry Allen actor) in the DC movie universe (though it seems highly unlikely since he didn't even get a cameo in the recent Flash movie from what I've heard, I haven't seen it yet).

Whatever happens, I loved this series. I rate this finale a 7.5/10 and the entire show 8.5/10. What do you rate it, and who do you wish appeared in the finale? Answer in comments!
