When I first watched Ajnabee I thought it would simply be a movie about starting a new life love and two couples who become friends But little by little the story takes a complete turn and becomes a mysterious thriller filled with betrayals secrets and a carefully orchestrated plot The film was released in 2001 and was directed by Abbas Alibhai Burmawalla and Mastan Alibhai Burmawalla.

THE BEGINNING OF THE STORY – RAJ AND PRIYA

The story begins with Raj and Priya, who meet fall in love and then decide to get married They start a new life in Switzerland
Raj and Priya seem to be a couple deeply in love Everything appears to be going perfectly But their new life changes when they meet their new neighbors Vicky and Sonia.
The two couples quickly become good friends They spend a lot of time together and even decide to go on a trip. When they travel to Mauritius Raj doesn’t yet know that this trip will mark the beginning of the biggest problem of his life.

MAURITIUS—WHERE THE SECRETS BEGIN

During their stay in Mauritius Raj discovers something that surprises him He sees Vicky with another woman which begins to arouse his suspicions
Meanwhile, Sonia starts to get closer to Raj. But Raj, not wanting to betray Priya rejects her
Vicky finds out what’s going on and begins to hatch a disturbing plan He suggests an idea to Raj that Raj would never have imagined that the two men swap wives for one night
Raj is furious He feels that Vicky has gone way too far and a huge argument breaks out between them Their friendship seems to be ove

THE PROBLEM RESURFACES

After returning to Switzerland Raj and Vicky stay apart for a while. But a few days later the tension eases and they start talking to each other again
On Vicky’s birthday the two men spend time together Raj thinks their previous conflict is now over.
But Vicky brings up his earlier idea once again.
Raj then finds himself caught up in a situation he doesn’t fully understand The two men end up at each other’s houses while Priya and Sonia don’t really understand what’s going on
The next morning Raj wakes up in a house that isn’t his own He’s completely lost.
When he returns home Priya tells him what happened during the night.
Raj begins to suspect that something was deliberately orchestrated but he still doesn’t understand what Vicky is really up to

While Raj is still trying to figure out what happened the story suddenly takes a dramatic turn.

The police immediately begin their investigation but the evidence seems to mysteriously point to Raj
Several pieces of evidence make Raj the prime suspect The man who was still living a happy life with Priya suddenly finds himself accused of a crime he claims he didn’t commit
Raj realizes he may have fallen into a trap

RAJ FACES A VERY SERIOUS ACCUSATION

The situation becomes very difficult for Raj.
Vicky begins to present the events in a way that makes Raj look like the culprit Raj tries to prove his innocence but all the circumstances seem to be stacked against him
He then realizes that if he doesn’t seek the truth himself no one will do it for him
So he decides to track down the real evidence and find out who is behind this plot

RAJ AND PRIYA—IN SEARCH OF THE TRUTH

Above all Raj needs someone he can truly trust
That person is Priya.
At first Priya is confused too. But when Raj explains what he really thinks she gradually begins to believe that he’s been set up.
The two of them then start investigating what really happened the night Sonia died.
They uncover several important pieces of information and begin to realize that Vicky might not have been the only one involved

THE BOARDING PASS—THE FIRST CLUE

During their investigation Raj discovers a boarding pass linked to Sonia.
This document raises new questions, as some of the information doesn’t match the time Sonia is believed to have been killed
Raj then begins to wonder:

If Sonia died that night how can this document exist

He realizes that someone is lying to him.
The further he goes in his investigation the more he realizes that Vicky’s story is much bigger than just a simple argument between two couples

VICKY’S TRUE PLAN IS REVEALED

Finally Raj uncovers a shocking truth
The woman he had previously seen with Vicky wasn’t exactly who he thought she was
Vicky was hiding a huge secret
The real Sonia was his wife while the woman known as Sonia was actually Neeta a woman connected to Vicky.
Vicky had married Sonia because she was rich He had then convinced her to take out a large life insurance policy
Vicky and Neeta had then hatched a plan to eliminate Sonia and collect the insurance money
But for their plan to work they needed someone else to take the fall.
And that person was

RAJ

RAJ FINALLY UNDERSTANDS THE WHOLE PLOT

When Raj realizes what really happened,several events begin to come together in his mind:
the reason Vicky had gotten close to Raj
the reason he was constantly talking about partner swapping;
the way Raj had been placed in a situation where he might appear to be the last person connected to Sonia
and why all the evidence suddenly seemed to be turning against him.
Everything had been planned in advance
But Vicky had made a mistake
He thought Raj would never be able to figure out his plan
Raj for his part begins to use all the information he has uncovered to expose the plot

THE FINAL PIECE OF EVIDENCE

Raj uncovers information about the money and the insurance He realizes that Vicky’s plan was primarily motivated by money
He also discovers other important details about Vicky that show this whole affair was by no means an accident
Raj then decides to confront Vicky head-on
At first Vicky still thinks he’s in control of the situation
But Raj makes it clear to him that the plan he had so carefully prepared is now falling apart

THE CLIMAX—THE TRUTH COMES OUT

The story finally reaches a very tense moment,as the main characters find themselves facing off against one another
Raj confronts Vicky head on
The truth about the plot begins to unfold particularly how Vicky had orchestrated events to make Raj the prime suspect
But Raj is no longer the vulnerable person Vicky thought he could manipulate
Above all he’s determined to protect Priya and put an end to Vicky’s plan.
Finally a showdown takes place and Vicky’s plot crumbles

THE END – RAJ AND PRIYA

When the whole truth is finally revealed Raj gets the chance to prove that he wasn’t responsible for Sonia’s death
Raj and Priya manage to get through this terrible ordeal together
What I particularly liked about this movie is the way it starts as a love story between two couples who become friends then gradually turns into a mystery thriller filled with betrayal and conspiracies.

MY THOUGHTS

Personally I really enjoyed Ajnabee At first I thought I was watching a simple love story about couples lives but the more the story progressed the more intriguing the suspense became

I especially liked how the movie gradually hides the truth When Vicky’s secrets start to come to light several scenes from the beginning suddenly take on a whole new meaning.

For me Ajnabee is a good thriller from the 2000s, with a mix of romance, mystery, betrayal suspense, and action
