Close Encounters of the Third Kind: A good re-watch of a classic.
I think one advantage of getting older is that you forget a lot about the movies that you already watched a long time ago. I was listening to the Star Talk podcast and they were talking about data sonification of X-ray signals from the Universe. The Chandra X-Ray Observatory is a NASA telescope that produces this data and it is pretty cool. They transform the data into music so they can notice differences in pitches and sounds instead of using regular measurement graphical plots. They add them to YouTube this data. In one moment, they mentioned the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I watched this movie long ago, since I am a Sci-fi fan for a while and I promise that the movie is older than me, but it used to be regular broadcasted in the open TV in Brazil.
If you watched this movie probably you already caught the relationship between the data sonification transforming X-ray into music with this movie. Basically, it is the way how the scientists discover how to communicate with aliens, through music. The movie has Richard Dreyfuss in the main role. Probably, Steven Spielberg liked him after Jaws two years earlier and added him to the cast because of that. The actor, despite his age, is still pretty active, but not doing great movies lately, like the latest "Into the Deep" from last year. Here in the Closer Encounter of the Third Kind, the actor was still young, like Teri Garr, who died not long ago. Probably most of the alien movies since the 80s were based on this classic movie, but why?
The movie has all the ingredients of the alien conspiracies and most of the movies are themed about the topic. We have human abductions, flying objects with numerous lights emanating and affecting electricity and vehicles when they pass by, and, of course, aliens in humanoid form, such as the well-known gray people with large eyes. But Interesting in the movie is that the aliens here aren't invading Earth, they aren't doing anything bad. Even the abducted are returned without harm. But that's the thing, scientists, until the end of the movie, don't understand what they are facing. In the great moment of communication using music and the aliens replying, one of the scientist admit: "We don't know what we are doing and what we are saying". But one thing they learn is that Math and Music are universal.
Another interesting thought is the development of Dreyfuss' character Roy. A regular man who, after the sightseeing of some UFO's he, starts to get isolated and obsessed by the events. His family and society leave him behind. He is left alone in his quest to unveil the truth after his mind shows a specific place where he knows the answer is. After testifying to the truth, he decides to leave Earth, to leave all his past. The famous "leaving the cave" that the philosopher Plato mentions, he leaves his prison behind to explore.
The movie brings so many thoughts about us and the universe, the ending is those that make us think after. We expect that the unknown is the threat, and why we fear the unknown so much. It is quite interesting that I watched this movie in installments, since the length is a bit more than 2h of movie. And right before my last part watched, I read the post from @wiseagent about a new movie from Steven Spielberg returning again to the aliens' topic called "Disclosure Day" . And I am a guy who watched even his version of "War of the Worlds" with Tom Cruise, which, to be frank not the best sci-fi movie. A remake of a classic with some Mission Impossible action touches. Anyways I am always anxious for new Steven Spielberg releases!
Acho que uma das vantagens de envelhecer é esquecer muita coisa sobre os filmes que já assistimos há muito tempo. Eu estava ouvindo o podcast Star Talk e eles estavam falando sobre a sonificação de dados de sinais de raios X do Universo. O Observatório de Raios X Chandra é um telescópio da NASA que produz esses dados e é muito legal. Eles transformam os dados em música para poderem perceber diferenças de tons e sons em vez de usar gráficos de medição convencionais. Eles adicionam esses dados ao YouTube. Em um momento, eles mencionaram o filme Contatos Imediatos do Terceiro Grau. Assisti a este filme há muito tempo, pois sou fã de ficção científica há um bom tempo e prometo que o filme é mais antigo do que eu, mas costumava ser transmitido regularmente na TV aberta no Brasil.
Se você assistiu a este filme, provavelmente já percebeu a relação entre a sonificação de dados, que transforma raios-X em música, e a trama. Basicamente, é a forma como os cientistas descobrem como se comunicar com alienígenas, através da música. O filme tem Richard Dreyfuss no papel principal. Provavelmente, Steven Spielberg gostou dele depois de Tubarão, dois anos antes, e o adicionou ao elenco por causa disso. O ator, apesar da idade, ainda está bastante ativo, mas não tem feito grandes filmes ultimamente, como o recente "Nas Profundezas" do ano passado. Aqui, em Contatos Imediatos do Terceiro Grau, o ator ainda era jovem, assim como Teri Garr, que faleceu recentemente. Provavelmente, a maioria dos filmes de alienígenas desde os anos 80 foi baseada neste clássico, mas por quê?
O filme tem todos os ingredientes das conspirações alienígenas e a maioria dos filmes aborda esse tema. Temos abduções humanas, objetos voadores com inúmeras luzes emanando e afetando a eletricidade e os veículos quando passam por perto e, claro, alienígenas em forma humanoide, como os conhecidos seres cinzentos de olhos grandes. Mas o interessante no filme é que os alienígenas aqui não estão invadindo a Terra, não estão fazendo nada de ruim. Mesmo os abduzidos são devolvidos ilesos. Mas é aí que está o ponto: os cientistas, até o final do filme, não entendem o que estão enfrentando. No grande momento de comunicação por meio da música e da resposta dos alienígenas, um dos cientistas admite: "Não sabemos o que estamos fazendo e o que estamos dizendo". Mas uma coisa que eles aprendem é que a matemática e a música são universais.
Outro ponto interessante é o desenvolvimento do personagem de Dreyfuss, Roy. Um homem comum que, após observar alguns OVNIs, começa a se isolar e a ficar obcecado pelos eventos. Sua família e a sociedade o abandonam. Ele fica sozinho em sua busca para desvendar a verdade depois que sua mente lhe mostra um lugar específico onde ele sabe que a resposta está. Após testemunhar a verdade, ele decide deixar a Terra, deixar todo o seu passado para trás. A famosa "saída da caverna" mencionada pelo filósofo Platão, ele deixa sua prisão para trás para explorar.
O filme traz muitas reflexões sobre nós e o universo, e o final nos faz pensar bastante. Percebemos que o desconhecido é a ameaça, e por que o tememos tanto? É interessante que eu tenha assistido a este filme em partes, já que a duração é um pouco maior que 2 horas. E bem antes de terminar de assistir a este filme, li a postagem do @wiseagent sobre um novo filme de Steven Spielberg que retorna ao tema dos extraterrestres, chamado "Disclosure Day" . E eu sou um cara que assistiu até à versão dele de "Guerra dos Mundos" com Tom Cruise, que, para ser sincero, não é o melhor filme de ficção científica. Um remake de um clássico com alguns toques de ação de Missão Impossível. De qualquer forma, estou sempre ansioso pelos novos lançamentos de Steven Spielberg!
