Elio's reflection on loneliness.

  Last June, we went to LA, especially so we could go to soccer games for my team. I went to two games, but one of them I went by myself since the tickets weren't cheap and also the time was a bit cruel. A game during summer during lunch time in a stadium without shade is crazy to bring kids to. I went to the game and my wife and kids went to watch Elio in the theatres. Elio is a Pixar movie and it is the type of kids' movie that I am really tempted to go to, but I couldn't. So yesterday I finally watched it on Disney+ by myself. Actually, I finished watching yesterday, it is difficult to watch a whole movie in one time nowadays. Here are my impressions.

  My wife hated the movie when she watched it with the kids, she said it was boring and nonsense. But even with that criticism, I still watched. I like to watch animations and especially Pixar movie,s never make me regret it. This one in particular, caught me in the movie clip, a kid whose dream is to be abducted by aliens. Maybe it is a story that is very original and non-mainstream. Who, in a perfect mindset, would want to be abducted by aliens? Elio's passion for the outer world is a bit tricky and infected by his state after losing his parents in a crash accident. He sees that alien capture is indeed the solution to his problems.

  The link between real story and fiction happens with the dream of humanity to discover if we are alone in the universe. Elio's love starts when he visits an exposition about the Voyager I probe that was sent in 1977 to outer space carrying a human "Hello" to possible intelligent life that can find it. The fiction starts when the probe is captured by real Aliens. And Elio has a chance to be abducted by the same Aliens who make part of an intergalactic community with beings for different planets, and Elio would be the Earth representative, since he presented himself as the Earth leader. Another interesting aspects is that all different types of extraterrestrial life are very different from the usual humanoid format that many sci-fi movies bring. We can't predict how other life forms are going to be, right?

  Elio's excitement of feeling finally part of something, since he was blind to see what he left on Earth, he couldn't see anyone near him since his parents' death, despite his aunt's efforts. Bad communication between Elio and his aunt was the main cause of their distance. Also, the movie brings a villain that in the end we see as not so evil. Just a real being with feelings and problems that hides behind a scary surface. In the end the villain shows himself as a soft (literally soft bodied) body and heartened with regular emotions, especially a paternal protection instinct with his child. The same paternal protection that Elio finally understands that his aunt also has and finally he stops feeling alone.

  The movie ends very well with an old quote by Carl Sagan, which is, for me, the best way to end this movie. I wasn't expecting that. And the quote that questions if we are really alone in the universe, but in this case is a question to ourselves about our surroundings ( family, friends, etc). It is a nice movie about grief, feelings, and paternal connections that don't necessarily come from your biological parents. I understand why my wife didn't like the movie much, she isn't much a sci-fi and geek girl. Don't forget to wait for the credits extra-scenes ;) .

  Em junho passado, fomos a Los Angeles, principalmente para assistir aos jogos do meu time de futebol. Fui a dois jogos, mas em um deles fui sozinho, já que os ingressos não eram baratos e o horário era um pouco cruel. Um jogo no verão, na hora do almoço, em um estádio sem sombra, é uma loucura para levar crianças. Eu fui ao jogo e minha esposa e filhos foram assistir a Elio no cinema. Elio é um filme da Pixar e é o tipo de filme infantil que eu tenho muita vontade de assistir, mas não conseguia. Então, ontem, finalmente assisti sozinho no Disney+. Na verdade, terminei de assistir ontem; é difícil assistir a um filme inteiro de uma vez hoje em dia. Aqui estão minhas impressões.

  Minha esposa odiou o filme quando assistiu com as crianças; ela disse que era chato e sem sentido. Mas, mesmo com essa crítica, eu ainda assisti. Gosto de assistir animações, especialmente os filmes da Pixar, que nunca me decepcionam. Este em particular me cativou logo no início, mostrando um garoto cujo sonho é ser abduzido por alienígenas. Talvez seja uma história muito original e fora do comum. Quem, em sã consciência, gostaria de ser abduzido por alienígenas? A paixão de Elio pelo mundo exterior é um tanto complexa e influenciada por sua condição após a perda dos pais em um acidente de carro. Ele vê a captura por alienígenas como a solução para seus problemas.

 A ligação entre a história real e a ficção se dá com o sonho da humanidade de descobrir se estamos sozinhos no universo. O fascínio de Elio começa quando ele visita uma exposição sobre a sonda Voyager 1, enviada ao espaço em 1977 com um "olá" humano para uma possível vida inteligente que a encontrasse. A ficção começa quando a sonda é capturada por alienígenas de verdade. E Elio tem a chance de ser abduzido pelos mesmos alienígenas que fazem parte de uma comunidade intergaláctica com seres de diferentes planetas, e Elio seria o representante da Terra, já que se apresentou como o líder terrestre. Outro aspecto interessante é que todos os diferentes tipos de vida extraterrestre são muito diferentes do formato humanoide usual que muitos filmes de ficção científica apresentam. Não podemos prever como serão as outras formas de vida, certo?

 A empolgação de Elio ao finalmente se sentir parte de algo, já que ele era cego para o que havia deixado na Terra, ele não conseguia ver ninguém perto dele desde a morte de seus pais, apesar dos esforços de sua tia. A má comunicação entre Elio e sua tia foi a principal causa do distanciamento entre eles. Além disso, o filme apresenta um vilão que, no final, vemos como não sendo tão malvado. Apenas um ser humano real com sentimentos e problemas que se escondem atrás de uma superfície assustadora. No final, o vilão se revela como um ser frágil (literalmente de corpo mole) e com emoções comuns, especialmente um instinto protetor paterno em relação ao seu filho. A mesma proteção paterna que Elio finalmente entende que sua tia também possui, e finalmente ele para de se sentir sozinho.

  O filme termina muito bem com uma citação antiga de Carl Sagan, que, para mim, é a melhor maneira de encerrar este filme. Eu não esperava por isso. E a citação questiona se estamos realmente sozinhos no universo, mas, neste caso, é uma pergunta que fazemos a nós mesmos sobre o que nos rodeia (família, amigos, etc.). É um belo filme sobre luto, sentimentos e laços paternos que não necessariamente vêm dos nossos pais biológicos. Entendo por que minha esposa não gostou muito do filme; ela não é muito fã de ficção científica e cultura geek. Não se esqueça de esperar pelas cenas extras após os créditos ;) .
