Predator: Badlands, checking Predators as the protagonists of the story.

  If you lived during the 90s, for sure you watched the first two Predators. Especially the first one with Arnold Schwarzenegger was an icon in the action movies in the late 80s, early 90s. A face-to-face combat with guns against an alien military-trained specimen. Technology that some people say even inspired military research. After these 2 movies, movie makers tried to make some fights between Predator and the wild Xenomorph from the Alien series. Which started to exhaust the formula a bit. But I got very surprised with the 2022 "Prey" movie and I was a bit anxious for watching the new Predator: Badlands from 2025.

  As with many of the movies, I wait to release on the streaming services for free. So they made it available on Disney+ not long ago and I watched, of course. The director is Dan Trachtenberg, the same as the director of the 2022 Prey, who also directed the interesting 10 Cloverfield Lane, from the Cloverfield sci-fi trilogy. Probably the biggest innovation of this movie is adding the Predator as the protagonist, not anymore the threat. Here we follow the story of Dek, a young Yautja(The predator race), trying to prove that he is worth after being already labeled as a disaster for his race as a hunter.

  We can see some similarities of the human protagonist from Prey and Dek, since both were trying to prove their value in a ritual passage with a hunting. In here, Dek goes to hunt the most feared living being in the Universe, the almost-immortal Kalisk in the dangerous Genna planet. The movie is also interesting because it mostly doesn't bring humans, except that indirectly humanity is against the rival of the Predator, but here just androids that a company sent to capture the Kalisk. So in here, humanity becomes the bad guys, different from the other Predator movies.

  The movie brought the good actress Elle Fanning, who played the two android sisters, Thia and Tessa. Two different androids but with different purposes in "life". I felt a bit weird to see this new predator falling too much in known human emotions and expressions. So, despite the innovation, it changed the concept of a cold Predator a bit. The happy ending typical of an action movie was interesting but not with a human as the protagonist. Another interesting detail was the aesthetics of the Genna planet, which somehow reminded me of some old sci-fi like Flash Gordon or Heavy Metal, with weird aliens very exaggerated.

  The movie is innovative, it brings the Predator in a different role and we have humanity as manace of the Universe ecology. But I admit that Dek was a pain in the ass and even I wanted to kill him sometimes. If you are a fan from Predator series, it is worth watching.

 Se você viveu nos anos 90, com certeza assistiu aos dois primeiros filmes do Predador. Principalmente o primeiro, com Arnold Schwarzenegger, que era um ícone dos filmes de ação no final dos anos 80 e início dos 90. Um combate cara a cara com armas contra um espécime alienígena treinado militarmente. Uma tecnologia que, segundo alguns, até inspirou pesquisas militares. Depois desses dois filmes, os cineastas tentaram fazer algumas lutas entre o Predador e o Xenomorfo selvagem da série Alien. O que começou a desgastar um pouco a fórmula. Mas fiquei muito surpreso com o filme "Prey" de 2022 e estava um pouco ansioso para assistir ao novo Predator: Badlands de 2025.

 Como acontece com muitos filmes, esperei até que fossem lançados gratuitamente nos serviços de streaming. Então, eles o disponibilizaram no Disney+ recentemente e eu assisti, é claro. O diretor é Dan Trachtenberg, o mesmo diretor de Prey (2022), que também dirigiu o interessante Rua Cloverfield, 10, da trilogia de ficção científica Cloverfield. Provavelmente, a maior inovação deste filme é a adição do Predador como protagonista, e não mais como ameaça. Aqui, acompanhamos a história de Dek, um jovem Yautja (da raça Predador), tentando provar seu valor após já ter sido considerado um desastre para sua raça como caçador.

 Podemos ver algumas semelhanças entre o protagonista humano de Prey e Dek, já que ambos tentavam provar seu valor em uma passagem ritualística com uma caçada.Neste filme, Dek parte em busca do ser vivo mais temido do Universo, o quase imortal Kalisk, no perigoso planeta Genna. O filme também é interessante porque, em sua maior parte, não apresenta humanos, exceto indiretamente pela presença da humanidade contra o rival do Predador, mas aqui são apenas androides enviados por uma empresa para capturar o Kalisk. Assim, a humanidade se torna a vilã, em contraste com os outros filmes do Predador.

 O filme trouxe a ótima atriz Elle Fanning, que interpreta as duas irmãs androides, Thia e Tessa. Duas androides diferentes, mas com propósitos distintos na "vida". Achei um pouco estranho ver esse novo Predador demonstrando tanto afeto e expressões humanas. Então, apesar da inovação, o filme alterou um pouco o conceito de um Predador frio. O final feliz, típico de um filme de ação, foi interessante, mas sem um humano como protagonista. Outro detalhe interessante foi a estética do planeta Genna, que de alguma forma me lembrou alguns filmes de ficção científica antigos, como Flash Gordon ou Heavy Metal, com alienígenas bizarros e exagerados.

  O filme é inovador, apresenta o Predador em um papel diferente e mostra a humanidade como a ameaça à ecologia do Universo. Mas admito que Dek era um pé no saco e até eu tive vontade de matá-lo às vezes. Se você é fã da série Predador, vale a pena assistir.
