When I wrote my post about the 4th season of Stranger things. It was in the middle of the volume 1 released in May and I wasn't planning to write more about this season. However, after watching the last two episodes from volume 2 I had to write a part 2 for that. Actually, the hype began with the tease video of the character introduced during this season, Eddie playing the guitar. My wife tagged me on Facebook to watch the tease. The tease had only the intro of the music, however, those who like music and most specifically rock recognize it as fast as possible! "Master of puppets" from Metallica.

In my previous post I stated how the music was important for this Tv series, and in the first half of the season music played an active role to fight the evil, in this case was Kate Bush hit "Running up that hill". Also, there was that scene in the psychiatric ward where the director mentioned that they had music therapy that was very effective to help the brain to heal. So for the second half of the tv show released at the beginning of July, they used this song from Metallica.

Different from Kate Bush hit, which was buried deep in the ground, this Metallica song is still played in the set lists of the band and also on the radios around the world before its appearance in the tv show, despite being an 80's song. It is interesting that the directors choose what I call an "old but still new song". Everyone that is introduced to rock/metal goes through Metallica, and of course "Master of Puppets"is one of their top hits. And the awesome thing is that also plays an active role in the TV show. It is used to fight also the evil Vecna. The interesting part is that we can associate the "master of the puppets" of the lyrics with this evil guy from the tv show:

Master of puppets, pulling your strings
Twisting your mind, smashing your dreams

In addition, Metallica released a statement on the band's official Instagram with the same conclusion that I made how music is important for the tv show

It’s an incredible honor to be such a big part of Eddie’s journey and to once again be keeping company with all of the other amazing artists featured in the show.

I like a lot this TV show, not only because of the music tracks behind it, but also about all the sci-fi and general nostalgia that it brings. However, the end of the season I guess was too confusing, and I think that they lost a bit, it was something like that: "Oh no something bad happened....and then...few it was bad but it is over....and then...oh no it isn't over". Of course, I am sad about the premature loss of a character in the TV show, but I got used to that after watching too much Game of Thrones. So for me still, the music saved this season. I am going to finish this review with the youtube video from the so special scene:

I damn love season 4! Although the previous season was still a blast but this season was different! I had a last song syndrome with "running up the hill"! And I think that scene where Eddie played his guitar with all the bats was epic too! As I'm not a metal song person but after reading this, i kind of appreciate that this series really embodied the 1980's era where heavy metal music was on the its height.

I agree with you! For me the music was always the cherry on top of the cake in the TV show, but in this season it played a huge role! That inspired me and it wasn't something felt only by me. I don't follow Metallica's IG account, I read about their post somewhere else and it is nice that they felt the same thing and probably some other artists. It is nice because it is a sci-fi Tv show, but it made a huge intersection with the music topic! Let's see what season 5 will bring! Thanks for stopping by!

I do hope they release season 5 soon! Urgh. The ending left me annoyed that Vecna is still alive though! The kids are now all grown up, the director was still able to produce the same quality of storyline and set! I am excited for season 5 and hope they release it next year! Fingers crossed.

I recently started watching Stranger Things and I need to get a little more familiar with the plot of the series, although I see that most people like it. If it's anywhere near as good as Game of Thrones, I'll be very pleased. Excellent post! :)

Well the genre is different of course, but that thing of never getting attached to a character is important for both tv shows, of course that for game of throne this is more strong! Thanks for stopping buy! I hope that you enjoy stranger things , I saw that you are a musician, if you enjoy 80’s songs that it is going to be an extra for you!

The music on this show is almost down-right hypnotic. I wonder if the show's making that one 80s song more popular than it was when it first came out.
