[Movie] Toy Story 5: A Nostalgic and Existentialist Experience
Every time I think of Toy Story, the song "You've got a friend in me" comes to mind. We decided to take the kids to Toy Story 5 at the movie theatre, but before that we had to have a marathon at home to watch all the other 4 movies that even I didn't watch all. So I went to the movies and got, as always, stabbed by the crazy money that they charge for popcorn and pops for all the family. We can get a nice dinner in a nice place for the same money, by the way, excluding the ticket prices. But I am always skeptical about movies that get so many sequences, but this one surprised me.

It is good to still see Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear; both actors are in their 70s. Toy Story is a bit nostalgic since I remember watching its release in the theatres, and I was just a bit older than my 9-year-old daughter. So, 5 movies later, I am bringing my own daughters to watch it. But the story brings some interesting elements, especially for us who are parents in the current time.
The main villain is a Tablet device. Well, it becomes friendly in the end like any big villain in Toy Story, and that's cool. We know that Tablets and other screen devices are good if used wisely. But the main problem of the movie is that kids aren't playing with toys anymore because they are addicted to screens. Looks like an apocalyptic theme, but it is really a current world problem. My wife loved that topic, and it was used by her after the movie to tell the kids, "See, that is a problem". But maybe one thing that the movie fails to show is that most of the problems with screens aren't with the kids, but with the parents.
The movie shows a problem: the girl Bonnie gets excluded because she doesn't have a tablet, and that really happens in real life. And it concludes by showing that it is ok if other kids ignore you or treat you badly because you are still playing with toys. But Bonnie's parents seem a bit loss to what to do. Despite the fact that they reassure in the end that she is a nice girl despite what mean kids say, they should have been more active in controlling what she was doing on the tablet, especially for a 8 years old girl. I have girls at a similar age, and we deal daily with this type of problem. We aren't perfect as well,l but we need to be an active part of our kids' lives.
But what I really thought was great in the movie is a philosophical debate about eternity. The cowboy girl toy Jessie was upset that maybe she would switch owners again, and she was sad because it turned into an endless problem. Since she gets a new owner, gets attached to them, then they grow up and forget her, so she enters an endless loop. Her heart was tired of this loop. That changed in a moment that even I cried. When she is back at the house where she had her first owner, which isn't there, she saw her name in a tree, found a hidden box, and discovered that her owner had a daughter and gave the daughter Jessie's name. That means that Jessie was important even when her owner grew up. That is a cool moment when Jessie realizes that the memories that she created for her owner lasted even when she grew up.

That ending for Jessie was important and brings an important existentialist concept that I think a lot about: relationships and everything that we live are not permanent; we can't control how long they last, but we can still create meaning while they last, and they can mark someone for their whole life. People who don't belong to us anymore left a mark on me, and they still live inside me; that is the closest concept of immortality that I accept. By the way also got sad that the Movie didn't bring the famous song that I talked about in the beginning, but in general it was a very good movie for kids and adults.

Decidimos levar as crianças para Toy Story 5 no cinema, mas antes disso tivemos que fazer uma maratona em casa para assistir aos outros 4 filmes, que nem eu tinha assistido a todos. Então fui ao cinema e fui, como sempre, esfaqueado pelo dinheiro absurdo que eles cobram pela pipoca e pelos refrigerantes para toda a família. Podemos conseguir um bom jantar em um lugar legal pelo mesmo dinheiro, diga-se de passagem, sem contar o preço dos ingressos. Mas eu sempre fico cético em relação a filmes que ganham tantas sequências, mas este me surpreendeu.

É bom ainda ver Tom Hanks como Woody e Tim Allen como Buzz Lightyear; ambos os atores estão na casa dos 70 anos. Toy Story é um pouco nostálgico, já que me lembro de assistir ao seu lançamento nos cinemas, e eu era apenas um pouco mais velho do que minha filha de 9 anos. Então, 5 filmes depois, estou levando minhas próprias filhas para assistir. Mas a história traz alguns elementos interessantes, especialmente para nós que somos pais nos dias de hoje.
O principal vilão é um dispositivo Tablet. Bem, ele se torna amigável no final, como qualquer grande vilão de Toy Story, e isso é legal. Sabemos que Tablets e outros dispositivos com tela são bons se usados com sabedoria. Mas o principal problema do filme é que as crianças não estão mais brincando com brinquedos porque estão viciadas em telas. Parece um tema apocalíptico, mas na verdade é um problema do mundo atual. Minha esposa adorou esse tema, e ele foi usado por ela depois do filme para dizer às crianças: "Vejam, isso é um problema". Mas talvez uma coisa que o filme não consiga mostrar é que a maioria dos problemas com as telas não é com as crianças, mas com os pais.
O filme mostra um problema: a menina Bonnie é excluída porque não tem um tablet, e isso realmente acontece na vida real. E ele conclui mostrando que tudo bem se outras crianças ignorarem você ou tratarem você mal porque você ainda está brincando com brinquedos. Mas os pais da Bonnie parecem um pouco perdidos sobre o que fazer. Apesar de eles garantirem no final que ela é uma menina legal, apesar do que as crianças maldosas dizem, eles deveriam ter sido mais ativos no controle do que ela estava fazendo no tablet, especialmente para uma menina de 8 anos. Tenho meninas com idades parecidas, e lidamos diariamente com esse tipo de problema. Nós também não somos perfeitos, mas precisamos ser uma parte ativa da vida dos nossos filhos.
Mas o que eu realmente achei ótimo no filme é um debate filosófico sobre a eternidade. A boneca caubói Jessie estava chateada porque talvez tivesse que trocar de dono novamente, e ela estava triste porque isso tinha se transformado em um problema sem fim. Como ela ganha um novo dono, se apega a ele, então ele cresce e se esquece dela, então ela entra em um ciclo sem fim. Seu coração estava cansado desse ciclo. Isso mudou em um momento que até eu chorei. Quando ela volta para a casa onde teve sua primeira dona, que não está lá, ela vê seu nome em uma árvore, encontra uma caixa escondida e descobre que sua dona teve uma filha e deu à filha o nome de Jessie. Isso significa que Jessie foi importante mesmo quando sua dona cresceu. Esse é um momento legal em que Jessie percebe que as memórias que criou para sua dona duraram mesmo depois que ela cresceu.

Esse final para Jessie foi importante e traz um conceito existencialista importante sobre o qual penso muito: os relacionamentos e tudo o que vivemos não são permanentes; não podemos controlar quanto tempo eles duram, mas ainda podemos criar significado enquanto eles duram, e eles podem marcar alguém por toda a vida. Pessoas que não pertencem mais a nós deixaram uma marca em mim, e elas ainda vivem dentro de mim; esse é o conceito de imortalidade mais próximo que eu aceito. Aliás, também fiquei triste porque o filme não trouxe a famosa música sobre a qual falei no começo, mas, no geral, foi um filme muito bom para crianças e adultos.

I saw the first movie before my kids were born and they enjoyed them later. I will see this some time, but maybe not at the cinema. Pixar always led the way with animation and storytelling. They know how to tug at your heart.
It is crazy this feeling right? I was 11 when it was released and I watched the same movie with them not long ago on Disney + and now we watched together for the first time Toy Story 5. I think Pixar is amazing, they can target both kids and adults at the same time! For sure my daughter if she re-watches it when she is grown up she will have a different perspective that she had now.
My kids are grown up, but no grandkids yet. Mine grew up on Pixar.

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
