A Geeky Guy's Guide to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

OK I am going to admit something that borders on the embarrassing. Even if it isn't embarrassing, I would imagine anyone who knows the content I like will find it utterly shocking.

You never watched Game of Thrones Sir? How is that possible Sir?

Hello. My name is Hanshotfirst, and I... have only watched the first season of Game of Thrones. Perhaps some day I will write the full rant of why I angrily boycotted that show after one season, but today is not that today. Instead I want to write an insanely positive post about one of the best shows I have ever seen.

I very rarely binge watch shows. I like to savor them and really take my time watching them one episode at a time. My wife and I usually watch a couple of shows a night and they usually aren't the same thing. Perhaps one comedy and one drama. But last weekend was different. I turned on episode one of A Knight of the Seven Realms, and I refused to turn off the television until it was over.

As I mentioned earlier, I did watch one season of Game of Thrones. In addition my wife read all of the books and watched every episode of the show when it first ran. So I do know a little bit about the characters and the general story, but I am pretty close to a blank slate when it came to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. And let me tell you, that did not impact my enjoyment one bit. The show is just flat out awesome! Perhaps I would have liked it more if I knew a little bit more about how these characters were connected to the ones in the future, but I didn't need that crutch to enjoy the show.

Find me a better buddy duo... I'll wait.

This show makes its bones through excellent writing and incredibly interesting and likable characters. And it is a good thing the writing, story and characters are so compelling because there is almost no action in this show at all. And that was completely OK with me.

This show is just a sensation "buddy flick" where one of the buddies happens to be a 10 year old bald kid who is about as quit witted as they come while the other is a relative giant for his time. It is a medieval spin on the classic odd-couple troupe... and it is fantastic!

There were several parts of the show that had me turning to my wife to ask, is this a Game of Thrones sitcom? And I meant that as the highest compliment.

The conversations between Egg (the bald kid) and Dunk (the almost giant... he's just really big and tall) are absolutely hilarious. And then all of a sudden they will be incredibly deep and touching.

Every new place, the pair went, and every new person they met gave them another opportunity to do something fun. I could have watched that pair wander the countryside entering tournaments and getting involved in political intrigue for at least 6 or 7 more hours!

Without spoiling it too much, Dunk... who later goes by Sir Duncan the Tall is a wannabe knight who is trying to get people to vouch for him. Egg is a poor stable boy who wants to become a squire. The two of them start on an adventure to enter a tournament so Si=r Duncan the Tall can start to make a reputation for himself. Luck for him, Egg seems to know a lot about the knight game so they make a perfect team.

Although I loved the writing, the real tip of the helm should go to the people in charge of casting this show. Paul Claffey does an amazing job as the wannabe knight Sir Duncan the Tall. He plays him with such charm and you truly believe that he believes in chivalry... perhaps more than the well known knights of the time. But that is nothing compared to Dexter Sol Ansell who plays Egg.

Ansell pulls off the best work by a young actor that I have seen in a very long time. Ansell is only 10 years old and managed to pull off this role perfectly. This was no small feat considering he gets about a quarter of the lines in the show, because this show relies so much on the "buddy" relationship, casting a talented young actor was essential. And holy shit did they pull it off. He was incredible.

The only complaint that I had about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is that it ended too soon. I want more on my TV right now!

Yeah, i was wondering the same thing, is that it for the first season or are their more episodes coming out??

I've heard a lot of good things about this show. I haven't seen it though because we don't have HBO. In fact. I too only watched the first season of Game of Thrones and then we lost our HBO subscription, so I never got around to watching the rest of it. I'm currently working my way through the second season of Sandman. It's definitely slow, but I haven't hated it.

I watched every episode of Game Of Thrones and it was a pleasant experience, but for the last episode. It ended quite abysmally.

One of the things I find most compelling about Game of Thrones is the interesting characters, lots of interesting characters with interesting qualities. I'm glad this is the same with A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms. And because of your glowing review of it, I'm sure going to check it out.

A mutual, symbiotic found‑family bond with strong pay‑it‑forward’ energy.Dunk and Egg make each other better, and that goodness keeps echoing down the timeline.Nice one!

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

Without a doubt, just reading the beginning of its publication, I can imagine how excellent this series must be; I'll definitely watch it all in one go.

I never watched Game of Thrones either. To this day, I am not really sure why. It just never really captured my attention. However, I know many were mesmerized by it. Go figure...

This was such a good show!! I can't wait for season 2! Of course that is probably pretty far off.

avatar

Yeah I am worried how they will handle the kid actor aging.

avatar

Always is a problem, although I also wonder how many seasons they are planning on. If it is only a couple, then it might not be an issue.

When I saw the bold kid I was expecting more something ww2 related or a sad story, for sure nothing medieval

And well I never watched even first season of game of thrones

It's clear he really enjoyed the series, my friend, since his only complaint is wanting to watch more on TV. It's incredible how many seasons he watched in a row! I'll definitely add it to my calendar to watch it whenever I have the chance, since his knowledge of film is something we can all enjoy.

We had to watch it and wait for the next episode every week. That was the only annoying part for me lol. We enjoyed it a lot as well, though I was a bit confused in the beginning why the show was leaning more towards comedy and not serious action and drama.. But that is only because I've never read the books and was expecting it to be like GOT and HOTD.

Really loved the show and the behind the scenes are fun as well especially the actor of Egg.

I had a similar experience, unexpectedly binging the series in a day after giving it a reluctant "eh, let's try the pilot" after all the advertisements had waned. My gosh what a show!! I never expected them to put so much slapstick in a GoT but it was honestly such a breath of fresh air from the typically overly-serious fantasy.

Definitely not for everyone but for me it was frickin brilliant. Makes me pine for simpler times. I wanna be a hedge knight and sleep under the stars!

I think that even though the action is less, the dialogue and story are so good that it is worth watching continuously. And Dexter Sol Ansell's performance in particular is really commendable.

Excellent, my friend! I hope the people behind the series, like the writers and casting directors, receive the support they deserve. Choosing actors for such a job can't be easy. Anyway, all that's left is to enjoy it; your recommendation makes it sound amazing.

I don't know, maybe once it's released off HBO to other networks, I'll try watching it. I am still stuck in the third season of, of, of, .....oh well, probably why I am still stuck there. lol.

avatar

This looks really good, and I just checked and discovered that I can watch it on realcouchtuner! It sounds really well written... looking forward to it! It could turn out to be a binge-watch!😆

avatar

Thanks for sharing this! I have been re-watching old series that I last watched years ago because I can't find anything good to watch. I hope it lives up to expectations. A good storyline makes all the difference, especially if there is an underlying aspect of mystery.

Excellent post. I'm really enjoying this series.

What really stood out to me is how you described A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms as something you didn’t just watch, but couldn’t stop watching. That says a lot especially since you mentioned you don’t usually binge shows. It makes the praise feel earned not exaggerated.
