A Geeky Guy's Guide to KPop Demon Hunters (After 3 Bourbon Old Fashioneds)
Usually I like to review movies with no caveats, but this one is unique. This weekend I went to dinner with my wife. Since she doesn't drink, I was drinking for two. Because the bartender was a true artist of his craft, I felt it would be insulting to only have two of his masterpieces. So three became the number of the Old Fashioneds. I'm pretty sure the bartender said, "Three shall be the number thou shalt drink, and the number of the drinking shall be three. Four shalt thou not drink, neither drink thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be drank, then lobbest thou keys to the Hyundai towards thy wife who, being awesome in My sight, shall drive it."
When I got home, my daughter asked if I wanted to watch KPop Demon Hunters with her. "Giddyup" I thought. I figured pop music and Demon Hunting would pair nicely with three bourbon old fashioneds... because just about everything except driving or going to work pairs well with three bourbon old fashioneds. So I sat down, poured myself one very tiny bourbon on the rocks and began to watch .
I'm pretty sure the movie was about some kind of ancient guardians, like the Knights Templar, who guarded the world from demons destroying it. These guardians somehow used music to protect the world and had done it with all musical genres dating back a long time... like before the 1980s even! I don't think it was actually in the movie, but I remember questioning if the Spice Girls were really demon hunters. Or maybe Devo. That would explain Devo.
Well this movie was set in modern times, so KPop is the music of choice to save our world from demons. This meant the movie was full of upbeat KPop songs. Before this movie, I couldn't even really tell you what KPop is exactly but I now think it is super catchy pop hooks, with crazy visuals, and some rapping/talking mixed in. I have always been a fan of electronic dance music, so I think I may have actually liked it. Or at least I liked this experience.
Aside from being buzzed, the movie was fun to look at and listen to. The movie is made for kids so I am sure you can guess what happens when a girl KPop band of demon hunters has to square off against a boy KPop band of demons. There are some fight scenes, sing offs and I think dance battles. Whatever they were, the animation looked pretty cool. It was all very bright and exciting. I remember laughing a few times at some of the characters. I think I really liked whichever member of the girl band was supposed to be the Aubrey Plaza-esque sullen, emo one. In short, I was entertained.
Probably my favorite part of the movie was the end credits (no it wasn't because I wanted the movie to be over... I actually had fun watching it). During the credits they showed all of the real singers and actors from the movie. Because I do not know a lot about young Korean stars, it was cool to see the talent behind this movie. Although I am way too old to be a KPop Stan, I can see why the kids today dig this. It is fun, energetic music. Every generation has their version of it. It may not be exactly for me, but I'd be lying if I said, I wouldn't dance to it if I heard it in a club... after having three old fashioneds.
Oh wait. I just remembered something else. This movie was not completely vapid. It actually had a really positive message about being yourself and loving yourself for who you are. Considering who the target audience of this movie is, that is a very powerful and needed message. Kids (of all ages) can never hear that enough!
If you like electronic music and old fashioneds, you might enjoy this one.
I don't know, I sometimes think drinking should be mandatory in public education! Have you had the premixed Old Fashioned that Costco sells? It's actually not too bad. My other favorite whiskey drink is the godfather. The combination of whiskey and amaretto is really good. I usually just drink it straight though. I can't say I am too familiar with kpop or demon hunting, but it sounds like you had fun!
My daughter showed me a part of it as she was watching it on her iPad over her dinner one night (I kind of miss their younger days when we always ate dinner together, it's very scattered now). She had been intending to watch it anyway but accelerated the process as apparently a whole bunch of people at gym (both her students and I think some of her friends) really, really, REALLY wanted to talk about it with her XD
She did warn me that the animation was deliberately choppy in places which I dislike purely on aesthetics (I am way too addicted to smoothness and gradients) but that it was otherwise pretty nice. Given the amount of colour and poppiness there was I think it would have been an interesting experience while drunk XD
Girl!! Bring back the no tabs at dinner time rule!
We have that and I enjoy it, even though there's often more talking than eating being done :D
I actually really enjoyed the movie (up to the 10th time :D). Have you seen it yet? If you havent, do it!!
PS; Where did the goat go?!!! Bring the goat back!
More talking than eating is fine XD we're all running on vastly different schedules now so we're all eating separately more often than not. On this particular night J, eldest and I had dinner together (youngest was in the house but chose to eat in his room) and middle had arrived home at some point after that and was having her dinner at the table (I'm pretending it's so she could talk to/hang out with me but it's probably just because like me, she doesn't like eating in her bedroom).
I have not seen it yet, I kind of watch things under some duress now and even then it's 100% dependent on how much art I feel like I've gotten to do (I will always pick art over watching stuff). I only saw the bits over middle's shoulder when she askeds me to have a quick look and was doing plot and character analysis with me.
The goat now goes on the bottom of my posts, I tried to make a slightly smaller sig for comments. Where have you been? :)
You painted that picture so vividly, I actually saw everyone so clearly in my head 🤣 It actually sounds like a normal dinner time considering how old everyone is.
I think Ill resist telling everyone to shut it and eat before dinner gets cold, and just enjoy the moment for what it is - precious and fleeting.
Im gonna head over and see what you've been up to. I'm still relearning everything and havent made the rounds yet 😅 I miss seeing the goat
I've been busy with the baby! Though she's 5 now .. (I can just see your face... 🤣) so she's technically not a baby anymore... anyhoo, now that she's older and we're homeschooling, and the end of the Splinterlands liquidity pool, Im now back blog side of the chain.
Please enjoy the moment and chat more XD the kids and I used to like the dinnertime conversation (though it was usually extremely difficult to get the boys to shut up so that anyone else could have a turn to speak) but J was extremely against anything other than gobbling down dinner as fast as possible (generational bad habit, apparently his mum used to steal food off their plates when they were kids, it was basically a case of "are you going to eat that" but then she'd grab it before they answered, and apparently never realising she was doing it, and in her case it was growing up dirt poor in a family of 8 or 10 or something like that with not enough food so all the kids were frantically gobbling down their food to avoid it getting stolen and stealing as much food as they were able off neighbouring plates, she said a lot of her childhood memories is just being always hungry).
He's gotten better but while growing up the kids got worse following that early example and then worse again when they were teenagers and not allowed to eat in their rooms so they would just want to scarf down as fast as possible without choking so they could rush back to their games.
when they started cleaning up after themselves regularly they were allowed to eat in their rooms if they want which the boys do but middle doesn't
Now that they're adults and much more mature the big two now want to eat with everyone else (even if it's just hanging out in the same room as me and/or J at the dining table) more often than not.
5 is still a baby! XD
I was only slightly off, I thought she might be 3-4 now
Gonna hit the homeschooling community on here? :D
Can confirm: three Old Fashioneds definitely enhance the KPop demon-fighting experience 😂 But seriously, even as someone new to KPop, I was surprised by how much heart (and glitter) this film had. Sometimes it's nice to just let go and enjoy the chaos!
I'm a recent Hive returnee and your post is the first I've read on here in a long time and just wanted to say - Thank you! I forgot how rich some of the content is on here and I'm already enjoying being back. I love your flavour :D
Ok, now on to Kpop Demon Hunters.
I watched this with my daughter. What was a random pick from the screen ended up being the new favourite.... over the school holidays 💀 It was on every single day, almost all day long, for 2 weeks. Two whole weeks!! I didn't think Id be happy to see Bluey again, but there I was.. Happy to see Bluey, yet singing Golden in my head...
PS; Never too old to be a Kpop stan ;)
If it's good, it's good!
K-Pop has had a lot of popularity in various parts of the world, as well as Korean novels. For example, my granddaughter is a fan of those novels. I will ask her a little more about the subject and of course if she wants to see that movie.
Good joke about what goes with bourbon :) I often drink 3 cognacs before a movie instead of popcorn.
popular in some asian countries
I loved the way you combined humor, drinks, and the movie experience. It's not always about age, it's about the feeling, and you captured that beautifully.
Greetings friend, and well, although I'm not a big fan of K-POP (my ex was), I'm somewhat familiar with it, and well, watching a movie after enjoying 3 Bourbon Old Fashioneds makes it even cooler.
My daughter made me watch this horrendous film. Kids movies are progressively getting worse.

Whether you are older or younger, husband and wife should enjoy each other in the same way. This was a very interesting film, which you have mentioned. After watching the artistic things, our mood also changes
Thank you for this review. I already watched it three or four times with my daughter and even if I'm a huge metal fan, I love it. But I was always a fan of animated films, especially with dynamic fighting scenes. It has some really epic parts, sometimes hilarious and the music is extremely catchy. I think Kpop demon hunter is perfectly styled through and through and I'm waiting for my daughter to ask, if we can watch it together again 😈
