A Geeky Guy's Guide To Superman
I have been looking forward to this movie for over two years. I LOVE James Gunn's movies. The three Guardians of the Galaxy and the Suicide Squad movies are in my upper echelon of super hero movies. Plus there is one more I'll save for later.
But for right now let's concentrate on Superman. Although it was not as good as Gunn's previous movies, it was still incredibly entertaining. It had action, humor and music... just not as much as Guardians of the Galaxy or The Suicide Squad. But I do not blame Gunn for this. The previous movies were built around fringe super heroes whose comic books were centered on humor. Superman is THE superhero. You have to be respectful when you are taking on the responsibility of putting him on the big screen. And I truly respect Gunn for respecting Superman so much. Actually it goes beyond that. Gunn showed great reverence for the hero who started it all over 70 years ago. He had some serious guardrails to adhere to. He ha an established character with a very well known origin story. Because Gunn is a genius when it comes to super hero movies, he had to put his own spin on that origin but he did it in an awesome way and also did it very quickly.
The last thing we needed was another Superman origin story. So instead of making that, Gunn found a creative way to put his spin on the origin story without wasting our time. This left plenty of room for action... and comedy.
Gunn can't make a movie without some humor. And that is why I love him (plus the heart... but that comes later). this time, Gunn found that in Crypto, the super dog from Krypton. That character is essential to the Superman story. it is no coincidence that it is also the character that has always been missing. Gunn knows that fans deserve some humor when watching a hero run around in their underwear saving the world. He uses Crypto as that comic relief, and it is brilliant!
What is mot intersting about this movie is that I didn't really start to like it until about half way through the film. There were no "oh wow!" moments. There was no scenes that stood out as truly original or jaw dropping. And that is ok. It is not that kind of movie. Instead it is a slow burn where you have to see the entire movie in its entirety to truly enjoy it. And by the end, me and every person in the packed theater had come to the same conclusion that the movie as a whole was great. It was a super entertaining story and a great launch into James Gunn's DC world.
I left there wanting more... which was really the main goal. The movie is entertaining, funny and full of action. If you like those things, g o see it on the biggest screen possible ASAP.
And now back to Gunn's best movies. After seeing this with my son, he asked "What's your favorite Superman movie?" Because he knows I'm a child of the 70s, he knows I am an expert who has seen everything from George Reeves on TV to Christopher Reeves in the theater in the 70s to Henry Cavil and his disappearing mustache. When it came to answering his question, I surprised him. My favorite Superman movie of all time is Gunn's "other" Superman story... Brightburn. If you have not seen it, I highly recommend it. But remember what we are talking about here. A baby comes from another planet and gets super powers that make them a god.
If you want more on that, I wrote about it many years ago.
Has anyone seen Superman yet? What did you think?
My buddy took his son to see it while we were camping this weekend and he said it was really good. He was frustrated that so many critics are picking it apart because in his words, "it was fricking awesome".
"Critics" drive me nuts. Not everything is supposed to be Citizen Cane. That is why I always try to stick to "is it entertaining and worth your time or not".
Yeah, I am kind of the same way. I think a lot of the criticism these days tends to lean towards the political and that is even more of a turn off! Just watch something because you enjoy it. I thought Skeleton Crew was great even though it was clearly geared towards kids.
I haven't seen that new Superman movie, but I hope to see it soon and give my humble opinion, although now I'm more eager to go for the good references that it gives us, my friend. That director gives it that touch of humor that is always needed in all movies to de-stress us.
I have also seen the Superman movie, but as you have now mentioned, his other films have also come out and are much more interesting and a much better and more interesting film, so I will also try to watch this film.
I can feel the excitement! James Gunn really knows how to bring heart and chaos together in the best way. The Guardians and Suicide Squad are top-tier picks — now I’m curious about that mystery one you’re saving! 👀
I haven't been to the movies for years, but I'll try to see it on some of the platforms that exist, and well, always watching movies, let's say from our childhood, with different actors, as well as the script will be fantastic.

Beautiful. Glad you enjoyed it.
As a child, we used to think that all these characters were real and that something similar would happen in our lives too
I loved it. I am so happy that Superman was kind. Finally we have the perfect Christopher Reeve successor.
Yes, I've already seen superhero movies. They've been my favorite since I was little, and they still are; they're stress-free. I also love watching action movies, and one of my favorites is Superman.
