A Geeky Guy's Guide to The Accountant 2

I am a movie fan but I am also a special education teacher so I have two different takes on The Accountant 2.

First, as an action movie, it was pretty entertaining. Although there was nothing very original about it, the action sequences were still pretty exciting. If you have not seen the first movie, they both star Ben Affleck as a former member of the special forces who has now become a very highly paid professional hit man. The gimmick of both movies is that Affleck's character, Christian Wolff, is on the Autism spectrum. As a result, he has a lot of the cliche abilities that Hollywood thinks all people with Autism have. Fort example, he is great with numbers... hence him also being an accountant.

Instead of just running back the exact same plot from the first movie, they decided to add Wolff's brother to the mix. Wolff's brother Braxton is played by Jon Berthnal who does an absolutely awesome job as both an action hero and straight man for some of the jokes in the movie. It was especially great to see Berthnal get to flex his action muscles considering the last movie I saw him in, The Amateur, completely wasted his talents. In addition to being a great sidekick, he also gets to help the audience understand a little bit about how Autism affects Chris.

So from purely and action movie perspective, The Accountant 2 is not great, but it is entertaining.

Now on to the second part. I am a special education teacher. As a result, I have a soft spot in my heart for people on the Autism spectrum. Any time I can see them represented as strong, smart and capable, I love it. This is one of the reasons that Drax for the Guardians of the Galaxy is one of my favorite Marvel characters. the Accountant 2 really tried to portray people with Autism in a realistic way. They worked in some scenes between Chris and his brother where they discuss how Chris's emotional responses are limited by his concrete and practical view of the world. I honestly think it could help someone understand people with Autism a little bit better. But I could also see why people with Autism and those who love them could be offended by the portrayal in this movie. But that is not the writer's or director's fault. Ben Affleck is simply a terrible actor. I am not saying he is not charming or entertaining, but he is objectively one of the worst actors who keeps getting work. As a result, his portrayal of a person with Autism comes off as hokey and almost comical.

Where the movie redeems itself is through the recasting of Chris's handler. Their is a British woman who Chris speaks to on the phone to set up jobs and get intel. But now we know it isn't a British woman at all. It is the text to speech device that his handler, who is on the Autism spectrum, uses to communicate with him. Allison Robertson, who is an actor who also happens to be on the spectrum, does and amazing job of portraying Chris's handler Justine. Instead of constant stimming for no reason the character stims in high pressure situations. Affleck might not be the best role model for people with Autism, but Robertson is... as long as you overlook the fact she is using her brains to set up hits. But this is an R-rated action movie, not an after school special so the audience should know what they are getting.

Its a pretty mindless and fun action movie so it is not a complete waste of time if you are into that... and I am.

From a cinematic perspective, the film is entertaining as an action movie even if it doesn’t offer anything new.
The point you mentioned about the character ‘Justine’ is very important as she presents a more realistic model while also adding credibility to the portrayal of people on the spectrum within the story.

If your opinion is that it is an entertaining action movie, you have to see it to draw your own conclusions. The most important thing from my point of view is to enjoy it and try to understand the plot, otherwise it will be very difficult to watch

I've never seen either of them, but I understand what you are saying. It's always a bit annoying when some mass violence incident happens and they feel the need to point out that the person is on the spectrum or has autism. It's reckless and sensational and adds pretty much zero context. Bernethal is one of my favorites. He totally nailed Punisher I think, so he is always a bit special for me.

avatar

I really loved him as Punisher but I wanted more action. And yep, the press drives me insane with how they cover these things.

To some extent, it's meant to express how well-represented people with autism are in the film. To understand it, you have to watch the first film, or maybe it's not necessary.

I imagine that, as a special education teacher, this film particularly caught your attention, as you know all the attention and care your students need.

You captured both the fun of action movies and the deep aspects surrounding autism beautifully. I really liked the mention of Jon Bernthal and Allison Robertson's work, it's clear how important authentic performances are.

I dunno. The first one is head and shoulder above it and it felt like this one was cashing in. It was trying to be too comedic and he wasn't half the bad ass as he was in the first one. Give me "Nobody" any day.

avatar

I LOVED Nobody. I still haven't seen the sequel yet but I'm going to.

It's really admirable to present an important subject like autism through a mainstream action movie. Although I think Ben Affleck's performance didn't fully convey the depth of the character, the realistic and positive representation through the character of Justin arouses curiosity in the audience.

me too when I see someone with autism, in my eyes they are strong to me. thanks for this.

It is not easy to teach children. You have to work very hard to tell the truth to them. This field is also not easy. Many of my friends are involved in this field and they keep telling their stories. It is good that you keep watching movies to change your mind. You also learn a lot from it. In action movies, we always see that the fighting is very interesting. It is also a fact that when we watch a movie, our interest in other things disappears and we get absorbed in the movie. For a few hours, we forget everything and become engrossed in the movie. So, I will try to watch it.

Good morning. I would like to see this movie. From what you say, it sounds quite exciting.

I actually enjoyed the movie, yes, partially because I can identify with some of the behaviors, but also because it's "a pretty mindless and fun action movie" as you stated. I'd probably watch it again after a while, but I also generally tend to like movies with Ben Affleck, specifically the later ones.

Btw I stumbled across this because your username caught my eye 😄 I'm a big Star Wars dude myself

This is one of the reasons that Drax for the Guardians of the Galaxy is one of my favorite Marvel characters.

Oh wow, I never made a connection between Drax and the Autism spectrum. This makes so much sense.

He's also been one of my favorite characters in Marvel. My wife and I frequently repeat his "Nothing goes over my head" line.

Interesting take! I like how the review looks at both the action side and the Autism representation. It’s good that the movie can be entertaining but also start conversations, even if it’s not perfect.

Teachers have a lot of experience spending time with children, so this film is definitely special to us, which is why you recommended it to us
