Bardock - The Father Of Goku ☄ TV Special [ENG | ESP]
Freezer fears that one day the Saiyajin will rebel against him. An old, worn-out legend has it that a Legendary Super Saiyajin will appear. Although the Saiyajin have worked very hard for the Emperor, he believes it is best to wipe them out to avoid any future threat.
"Bardock. The Father Of Goku", "Freezer's battle against Goku's father", in Latin America is a special episode of the Dragon Ball Z TV series. It premiered on 17 October 1990 between episodes 63 and 64 of the popular anime based on the manga by Akira Toriyama. At that time we still had the first opening, with Cha-La Head-Cha-La but without the Goku Super Sayajin scenes. To this day I think it's a more nostalgic opening. At a time when Goku's friends still had a lot to show in the plot. But seen with the eyes of an adult now, I find it a bit funny that Goku turns his back on Chaozu and Ten Shin Han like that. Details that would be corrected in the next opening, which would be the same but with new scenes.
Freezer teme que algún día los Saiyajin se rebelen contra él. Una vieja y desgastada leyenda, indica que apareciera un Legendario Super Saiyajin. A pesar de que los Saiyajin han trabajado muy duro para el emperador, este cree que lo mejor es acabar con ellos y así evitar cualquier amenaza para el futuro.
“Bardock. The Father Of Goku”, “La batalla de Freezer contra el padre de Goku", en Latinoamérica es un episodio especial de la serie de televisión Dragon Ball Z. Que se estrenaría el 17 de octubre de 1990 entre los episodios 63 y 64 del popular anime basado en el manga de Akira Toriyama. Para aquel momento aún teníamos el primer opening, con Cha-La Head-Cha-La pero sin las escenas del Gokú Super Sayajin. Al día de hoy pienso que es un opening más nostálgico. En un momento en el que los amigos de Gokú aún tenían para mostrar en la trama. Pero visto con los ojos de adulto ahora me causa un poco de gracia que Gokú le dé la espalda de esa manera a Chaozu y a Ten Shin Han. Detalles que corregirían en el siguiente opening, que es sería el mismo pero con nuevas escenas.

Bardock and his comrades embark on a mission to conquer the planet Kanassa. During the battle, Bardock received a blow that triggered in him the ability to see the future. These visions included the imminent destruction of his home planet at the hands of Freezer and revealed the fate of his son, Son Goku, showing him not only the life that awaited him, but also the feats that would mark the legacy of our protagonist.
Meanwhile on the planet Vegeta, we see a newborn Goku being examined by doctors at what appears to be an analysis and recruitment centre. The doctors consider him to be a low-class warrior, due to the little power he emanates, and decide to send him to a planet where there are no powerful individuals, so that he can be conquered by the little Saiyajin.
Bardock y sus camaradas se embarcan en una misión para conquistar el planeta Kanassa. Durante la batalla, Bardock recibir un golpe que desencadenó en él, la capacidad de ver el futuro. Estas visiones incluían la inminente destrucción de su planeta natal a manos de Freezer y revelaban el destino de su hijo, Son Goku, mostrándole no solo la vida que le esperaba, sino también las hazañas que marcarían el legado de nuestro protagonista.
Mientras tanto en el planeta Vegeta vemos a un Goku recién nacido siendo examinado por los doctores de lo que parece ser un centro de análisis y reclutamiento. Los doctores estiman que es un guerrero de clase baja, por el poder que poco poder que emana y deciden enviarlo a un planeta donde no haya individuos poderosos, para que así sea conquistado por el pequeño Saiyajin.

In another scene, which I must admit is one of my favourites. We can see a little Vegeta, training in a room against some Saibaiman, whom he defeats without much effort. We can also see a young Nappa, still with his hair. Scene that would be kept for the Dragon Ball Z Kakarot videogame, in one of its story expansions.
En otra escena, que debo admitir es de mis favoritas. Podemos ver a un pequeño Vegeta, entrenando en una sala contra unos Saibaiman, a quienes derrota sin el mayor esfuerzo. También podemos ver a un Joven Nappa con aún con cabello cabello. Escena que se conservaría para el videojuego Dragon Ball Z Kakarot, en para una de sus expansiones de la historia.
Next, we see the Emperor with his aides-de-camp, Zarbon and Dodoria. Zarbon informs Freezer that the planet Kanassa has been successfully invaded a month early by a team of Saiyajin. Dodoria claims that the Saiyajin race has improved quite a bit and that they are getting better and better, especially Prince Vegeta, who carries the vengeance of Freezer, and who has a power that is uncommon in children of his kind. Zarbon immediately warns that if the Saiyajin continue to build up their strength, then they could get into serious trouble. So Freezer makes a decision to wipe out all the Saiyajin before they become a problem. Years later we would learn that it would be the God of Destruction Bills who ordered Freezer to wipe out the Saiyajin planet.
Seguidamente, vemos al emperador junto a sus edecanes, Zarbon y Dodoria. Zarbon informa a Freezer que el planeta Kanassa ha sido invadido exitosamente y con un mes de adelanto, por un equipo e saiyajin. Dodoria alega que la raza de los saiyajin ha mejorado bastante y que cada día trabajan más, especialmente el príncipe Vegeta, quien lleva la venia de Freezer, y quien tiene un poder que no es común en los niños de su clase. Zarbon inmediatamente advierte que si los saiyajin siguen aumentando sus fuerzas, entonces podrían meterse en graves problemas. Así que Freezer toma una decisión, acabar con todos los saiyajin antes de que se vuelvan un problema. Años después sabríamos que sería el Dios de la destrucción Bills quien le ordenó a Freezer acabar con el planeta de los Saiyajin.
Later we see Bardock in a recovery chamber, being healed after the fight and the blow he received on the last conquered planet. The doctors are impressed by his abilities, as "despite being a low-class warrior", he always comes out of battles with a good airing.
Más adelante vemos a Bardock en una cámara de recuperaciones, siendo curado tras la pelea y el golpe que recibió en el último planeta conquistado. Los doctores se impresionan de sus capacidades, ya que al “a pesar de ser un guerrero de clase baja”, siempre sale aireado de las batallas.

While Bardock recovers, his companions set out on their next conquest, the planet Meat. When Bardock awakens, he tries to catch up with them, but when he arrives he finds that they have been annihilated by a squad of Freezer, commanded by Dodoria who were responsible for the massacre. He fights them, and defeats them, but when he tries to fight Dodoria, the fight loses balance and Bardock is defeated. Dodoria, who believes his work is done, returns to Freezer's ship, who heads to the planet Vegeta to destroy him. But Bardock is still alive in the wreckage and goes to the planet Vegeta to try to warn its inhabitants and organise a revolt against the Emperor.
Mientras Bardock se recupera, sus compañeros salen en su próxima conquista, el planeta Meat. Cuando Bardock despierta, intenta alcanzarlos, pero cuando llega se da cuenta de que estos han sido aniquilados por un pelotón de Freezer, comandado por Dodoria fueron los responsables de la masacre. Lucha con ellos, y los derrota, pero cuando intenta pelear con Dodoria, la pelea pierde el balance y Bardock es derrota. Dodoria quien cree haber terminado su labor, regresa a la nave de Freezer, quien se dirige al planeta Vegeta para destruirlo. Pero Bardock sigue vivo entre los escombros y se marcha al planeta Vegeta para intentar advertir a sus habitantes y organizar una revuelta contra el emperador.

But when they reach their planet, no Saiyajin believe Bardock's words, and they begin to mock him. He curses them and hopes they all go to hell. A line I loved from the film, as you can feel the raw frustration of the Saiyajin. Who resolves by engaging in a direct battle against the emperor and his minions.
Pero al llegar a su planeta, ningún saiyajin cree las palabras de Bardock, y empiezan a burlarse de él. Este los maldice y espera que todos se vayan al infierno. Frase que amé de la película, ya que puede sentir en carne viva la frustración en carne viva del Saiyajin. Quien resuelve emprendiendo una batalla directa contra el emperador y sus secuaces.

As the ship flies over the planet, Bardock blasts all of the Emperor's warriors, and none of them can resist him. Freezer, frustrated, decides to put an end to all the commotion by stepping out of the ship. Bardock says a few words to them, and immediately throws an energy sphere at him, claiming that this will be the end of Freezer. But Freezer laughs at our anti-hero and launches a gigantic energy ball, which annihilates Bardock and destroys the planet Vegeta.
Cuando la nave sobrevuela el planeta, Bardock estalla contra todos los guerreros del emperador, y ninguno puede oponerle resistencia. Freezer, frustrado, decide poner fin a todo el alboroto, saliendo fuera de la nave. Bardock les dedica unas palabras, y de inmediato le lanza una esfera de energía alegando que será el fin de Freezer. Pero este se ríe de nuestro antihéroe y lanza una gigantesca bola de energía, que aniquila a Bardock y destruye el planeta Vegeta.

Although the end of this special is full of melancholy, we can see the last premonition of Bardock, who observes how in the future, his son will face Freezer. Then we see Goku arriving on Earth, and being "rescued" by Grandpa Gohan in the Paoz Forest. Thus ends this fabulous special that shows us a little more of the lore of Dragon Ball. It's actually one of my favourites, I hadn't seen it for a long time, and I really enjoyed it again. This episode is also known as "The Last Fight" in Spain. In Latin America, it was part of the canon until the appearance of the manga Dragon Ball Minus.
Dragon Ball Minus is a special one-chapter manga created by Akira Toriyama. It was published in Japan on 4 April 2014 as an extra to "Jaco, the Galactic Patrolman". The story serves as a prequel to Dragon Ball and tells how Goku escaped the destruction of the planet Vegeta. In Dragon Ball Minus we get our first glimpse of Bardock and Gine, Goku's parents.
The movie Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018) is connected to Dragon Ball Minus. After this movie, the manga Dragon Ball Super and its saga "Prisoner of the Galactic Patrol" follows. But we'll talk about that another time.
Aunque el final de este especial está lleno de melancolía, podemos ver la última premonición de Bardock, quien observa como en el futuro, su hijo enfrentará a Freezer. Luego vemos a Goku llegando a la tierra, y siendo “rescatado” por el abuelo Gohan en el bosque Paoz. Así termina este fabuloso especial que nos muestra un poco más del lore de Dragon Ball. La verdad es que es de mis favoritos, tenía mucho tiempo que no lo veía, y lo disfruté mucho otra vez. Este episodio también se conoce como “El último combate” en España. En Latinoamérica, formó parte del canon hasta la aparición del manga Dragon Ball Minus.
Dragon Ball Minus es un manga especial de un capítulo creado por Akira Toriyama. Se publicó en Japón el 4 de abril de 2014 como un extra de "Jaco, el patrullero galáctico". La historia sirve como precuela para Dragon Ball y narra cómo escapó Gokú de la destrucción del planeta Vegeta. En Dragon Ball Minus podemos ver por primera vez a Bardock y Gine, los padres de Goku.
La película Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018) se conecta con Dragon Ball Minus. Después de esta película, sigue el manga Dragon Ball Super y su saga “El prisionero de la Patrulla Galáctica”. Pero de eso hablaremos en otra oportunidad.

Thanks for getting this far, I'll try to keep doing reviews of these films. Which I haven't seen for a long time, to review if they are as good as I remembered them as a kid, to see if my opinion has changed with a more adult look. For now... I really enjoyed this special. This is one of my favorite Dragon Ball special episodes, I like the dramatic and serious tone of Bardock's story, I think it is much better than in Broly's movie.
Despite its short length, one thing I like about this episode is that it takes time to tell the story. Something that is sorely missed in Super and the new films.
