G20 mini-review / G20 mini-recenzja
When Amazon released the initial information about this film, I ignored it. Then they uploaded the first trailer, and with the simple title in mind, I looked at the cast list. I saw Viola Davis, Antony Starr and thought it was going to be a cool show. Something like Die Hard, but done a bit differently. During the screening, it turned out that my predictions were right - both films have a few things in common.
I will return to this topic in the next paragraph, for now a few words about the director. This is not her debut in this position, but Patricia Riggen does not have much experience either. According to IMDB, she is one of the leading Latin American directors and well, it is hard to disagree with that. Although I was more convinced by Babadook by Jennifer Kent (due to the atmosphere, plot, gradual revealing of her layers - of course I am talking about these aspects only from a director's perspective), looking at the films as a whole, G20 presents itself better. On the other hand, it's no wonder, Patricia has a bit more experience and is making a film for Prime, who probably ordered to fix those microscopic mistakes in editing etc. Of course I'm not comparing both productions, it's pointless due to different genres. I just thought of this horror from 2014, when I praised Patricia for the 3rd time.
Why did I compare this movie to Die Hard? Because of the similar idea - terrorists have taken control of a building filled with wealthy hostages who can be helped by one person (in the case of G20 - a group of people), who play cat and mouse with the kidnappers. Additionally, during the screening, a certain bond is established between the protagonist and the leader of the terrorists. As for the rest of the script, it is simple. A group of bandits have taken over a wallet filled with bitcoins, and immediately after that they fly to the G20 countries meeting in South Africa to take world leaders hostage. Then they force them to share their data in order to create fake news. The attackers want to use it to destroy the world economy, and as a result, they play for losses, while watching their wallet increase in value.
When I was looking for information about this movie, I came across many critical reviews. I can agree with individual comments, but most of them I consider excessive nitpicking or whining for the sake of whining. G20 is a casual action movie. It's not an ambitious production that you've been waiting for for a long time. The creators also didn't advertise it as a show that you simply have to see. No. G20 is a movie at the level of a B-class production on VHS, but with better direction and maybe a slightly bigger budget, but apart from that, it's still a loose movie that's meant to relax after a hard day's work. Then we don't want to watch anything complex that requires thinking, just something that's simple. As long as it's fairly coherent, so that nothing disturbs our sweet laziness.
When it comes to acting, my opinion is a bit more critical. I don't know about Homelander, because I only know him from the series The Boys, but in my opinion Viola Davis could have shown herself from a slightly better side. Although I think she did what she could. She had a bit of limited room to maneuver as the President of the USA and a former Marine + she used most of the airtime as much as she could. Either way, G20 is average in this respect and doesn't stand out in a positive or negative way.
It's hard for me to say anything more without repeating myself, so I'll limit myself to the minimum. It's a simple film that is supposed to provide simple entertainment. G20, despite its simplicity, is not an illogical production. Just watch it and forget it. I liked it there and I don't understand the criticism.
Gdy Amazon udostępnił wstępne informacje na temat tego filmu, zignorowałem je. Potem wrzucili pierwszy trailer, a ja mając w pamięci prosty tytuł, spojrzałem na listę aktorów. Zobaczyłem Violę Davis, Antony'ego Starra i uznałem, że zapowiada się fajne show. Takie coś w stylu Die Hard, ale poprowadzone trochę inaczej. W trakcie seansu okazało się, że moje przewidywania są słuszne - oba filmy mają kilka wspólnych cech.
Wrócę do tego tematu w kolejnym akapicie, póki co parę słów o reżyserce. Nie jest to jej debiut na tym stanowisku, ale Patricia Riggen nie ma też dużego doświadczenia. Według IMDB, to jedna z czołowych Latynoamerykańskich reżyserek i cóż, trudno się z tym nie zgodzić. Co prawda bardziej przemówił do mnie Babadook od Jennifer Kent (z uwagi na klimat, fabułę, stopniowe odsłanianie jej warstw - rzecz jasna mówię o tych aspektach wyłącznie z reżyserskiej perspektywy), ale patrząc na filmy jako całość, G20 prezentuje się lepiej. Z drugiej strony, nie ma co się dziwić, Patricia ma odrobinę więcej doświadczenia oraz tworzy film dla Prime'a, który pewnie sam nakazał poprawić te mikroskopijne błędy w montażu etc. Oczywiście nie porównuję obu produkcji, to bez sensu z uwagi na odmienne gatunki. Po prostu pomyślałem o tym horrorze z 2014, gdy po raz 3 pochwaliłem Patricię.
Czemu porównałem ten film do Die Hard? Z uwagi na podobny pomysł - terroryści przejęli kontrolę nad budynkiem wypełnionym bogatymi zakładnikami, którym może pomóc jedna osoba (w przypadku G20 - grupa osób), która bawi się w kotka i myszkę z porywaczami. Dodatkowo w trakcie seansu, nawiązuje się pewna więź między protagonistką, a liderem terrorystów. Jeśli chodzi o resztę scenariusza, to ten jest prosty. Grupa bandytów przejęła portfel wypełniony bitcoinami, a zaraz po tym lecą na zlot krajów G20 do RPA, by wziąć światowych przywódców za zakładników. Następnie zmuszają ich do udostępnienia swoich danych w celu stworzenia fake newsów. Napastnicy chcą ja wykorzystać do zniszczenia światowej gospodarki, a co za tym idzie, grają na straty, obserwując jednocześnie jak ich portfel zwiększa swoją wartość.
Gdy szukałem informacji o tym filmie, natrafiłem na wiele krytycznych recenzji. Mogę się zgodzić z pojedynczymi uwagami, ale większość uważam za przesadne czepianie się lub marudzenie dla marudzenia. G20 to luźny film film akcji. Nie jest to ambitna produkcja, na którą czekało się dłuższy czas. Twórcy również nie reklamowali tego jako show, które po prostu musisz zobaczyć. Nie. G20 to film na poziomie produkcji klasy B na VHS, ale z lepszą reżyserią i może z nieco większym budżetem, ale pomijając to, to ciągle luźny film, który służy relaksowi po ciężkim dniu pracy. Wtedy nie chcemy oglądać nic złożonego, wymagającego myślenia, tylko coś co będzie proste. Byleby było w miarę spójne, żeby nic nie zaburzało naszego słodkiego lenistwa.
Jeśli chodzi o aktorstwo, to moja opinia jest nieco bardziej krytyczna. Nie wiem, jak w przypadku Homelandera, bo kojarzę go tylko z serialu The Boys, ale moim zdaniem Viola Davis mogła pokazać się z nieco lepszej strony. Chociaż tak sobie myślę, że zrobiła co mogła. Miała trochę ograniczone pole do manewru jako Prezydent USA oraz była Marines + wykorzystała większość czasu antenowego na tyle, na ile potrafiła. Tak czy inaczej, G20 pod tym względem prezentuje przeciętny poziom i nie wyróżnia się w pozytywny lub negatywny sposób.
Trudno powiedzieć mi coś więcej bez powtarzania się, więc ograniczę się do minimum. To prosty film, który ma zapewnić prostą rozrywkę. G20 mimo swojej prostoty, nie jest nielogiczną produkcją. Ot obejrzeć i zapomnieć. Mi się tam podobało i nie rozumiem krytyki.
