Vice - Mini review / Vice - Mini recenzja.

As the elections are coming up in Poland soon, this is a good opportunity to remind you of a film from 6 years ago. Especially since the director of Vice does not bother to polite his message.

Lately, I have been lucky to watch "almost good films". Vice is a slightly different case than Creator and The Substance. In this case, the main problem is that the production was poorly planned. It would have been possible to fix it if the film had been 3 hours long, maybe 3.5. It would have been even better if it had been divided into two parts - the Nixon era and the Bush era. Especially since the director himself focused primarily on these two periods. Normally I would complain about it, but I watched it on a free day and I know (or at least recognize) most of the names, names, situations that were mentioned in Vice. However, this does not change the fact that I was tired after the screening.

The film tells the story of an American politician, Dick Cheney. His political career began in 1969 in the administration of President Richard Nixon. Then he worked until 1976 in the White House and became Gerald Ford's chief of staff. It all ended when Ford lost by a relatively small margin. Dick had to fall back to the position of a Congressman. From March 1989 to 1993 he worked as Secretary of Defense in the cabinet of George Bush. Then he started working in the private sector, as is usually the case among American politicians. This lasted until January 20, 2001, when the young Bush chose him as his vice president...

At the foundation of politics, after removing all the more or less important "excrescences", there are above all two questions: What can you give me? And what can you do to me if I don't give it to you? Adam McKay, the director of this film, knows this too. Why? Because it is one of several messages that he directs to the audience. Another is that politicians and basically all people, fight their own wars, invisible to almost everyone. These result from various reasons, but are limited by various factors. In the case of some professions, they can afford to do more. High-level politicians, on the other hand, can make the entire world a battlefield. In some cases, literally - see Cambodia and Iraq. The effects of his rule are felt to this day. Terrorist attacks, destabilization of the region, murder of many people, orphaning of many children, destruction of the everyday lives of those who survived. In addition, pitting people against each other, gradually limiting their freedom, earnings... This is standard in the world of big politics.

It's hard for me to say anything more about it. I mean, sure, I could try, but it would be pointless. If you're over 30, you've seen at least some of these things yourself, if not on TV, then on the Internet. There you'll also find much better materials that will explain it incomparably better than I can. It's a pity the film didn't do that. After watching the film, I had a conversation with a friend. In our opinion, this is because the producers didn't want to split it into two parts due to the increased budget or the lower popularity of the second part. It's a pity, because this resulted in various cuts and squeezing in as many events and plots as possible, which makes the viewing tiring, even if you know what you're watching on the screen at the moment.

When it comes to acting, the main star of this film is Christian Bale. A month ago, I saw American Psycho for the first time in my life. I won't compare these roles, because they are different, but in both, Christian did a great job of showing an intriguing personality. Vice has long portrayed Dick as a typical dick who has no regard for other people and cares only about power (sorry, I couldn't resist that childish joke). He is driven by such extreme cynicism that the cynics we perceive as evil aren't actually that corrupt. How surprised I was when it turned out that this man has a soft underbelly. It is so sensitive that for the happiness of one person, he is ready to give up part of his ambitions. You can see that the actor prepared for the role. All the gestures, characteristic facial expressions, appropriate accentuation of vulgarities and that great make-up! The film absolutely deserved the Oscar in 2019 for hair and make-up, and Bale the Golden Globe for best role. Now I think that if it weren't for him, I would probably have abandoned this film halfway through.

Although it also features actors and actresses that I like (Amy Adams, Jesse Plemons and Sam Rockwell), they didn't make a big impression on me. I don't know if it's the director's merit, but apart from Christian Bale, no one made an impression on me. Not even Amy Adams, who played the wife of the titular Vice. The beginning gave some hope - I like the plot of "behind every man's success there is a strong woman", or rather closer to the reality: "A man is the head of the family, and a woman is the neck." In the end, nothing came of it. Killers of the Flower Moon, the Yellowstone series, Lioness or a few others presented this idea much better. Here, the potential was exhausted at the very beginning in my opinion.

To sum up, I have some difficulty in assessing this production. I liked it, but I like black humor, politics, and even if I don't understand something at all, I can somehow connect it with other facts or explain it in other ways. If it weren't for my hobby, the film would be gibberish to me after the first half. The second half goes too fast, and the director throws us facts, relationships with characters and other "important things" that he pushed not with his leg, but with both knees. With his thighs tense, as if he was exercising his legs and back on an atlas with a heavy load. Nothing saves him, a well-written script, actors, direction. It's not a complete failure, but definitely wasted potential. Fortunately, the further I am from the premiere, the less it bothers me. From me 6.5/10. A properly made film with several advantages, which could have been much better, but the director and producers lacked motivation.

Jako że niedługo są w Polsce wybory, to jest dobra okazja do przypomnienia Wam filmu sprzed 6 lat. Tym bardziej, że reżyser Vice nie bawi się w ugrzecznianie swojego przekazu.

Ostatnio mam szczęście do oglądania "prawie dobrych filmów". Vice to trochę inny casus niż Creator i The Substance. W tym przypadku główny problem stanowi to, że źle zaplanowano produkcję. Dałoby się to naprawić, gdyby film trwał 3 godziny, może 3.5. Byłoby jeszcze lepiej, gdyby go podzielić na dwie części - erę Nixona i erę Bushów. Tym bardziej, że sam reżyser skupił się przede wszystkim na tych dwóch okresach. Normalnie bym na to narzekał, ale obejrzałem go w trakcie wolnego dnia oraz znam (lub chociaż kojarzę) większość nazwisk, nazw, sytuacji, które zostały wymienione w Vice. Nie zmienia to jednak faktu, że byłem zmęczony po seansie.

U podstaw polityki, po usunięciu wszystkich mniej lub bardziej istotnych "narośli", są przede wszystkim dwa pytania: Co mi możesz dać? I co mi możesz zrobić, jeśli ci tego nie dam? Adam McKay, czyli reżyser tego filmu, również to wie. Czemu? Bo to jedno z kilku przesłań, które kieruje w stronę widzów. Kolejnym jest to, że politycy i w zasadzie wszyscy ludzie, toczą swoje własne, niewidzialne dla niemal wszystkich wojny. Te wynikają z różnych powodów, ale są ograniczane przez różne czynniki. W przypadku niektórych zawodów, mogą sobie pozwolić na więcej. Politycy wysokiego szczebla mogą natomiast sprawić, że cały świat stanie się polem bitwy. W niektórych przypadkach wręcz dosłownie - patrz Kambodża i Irak. Efekty jego rządów odczuwamy po dzień dzisiejszy. Zamachy terrorystyczne, destabilizacja regionu, wymordowanie wielu ludzi, osierocenie wielu dzieci, zniszczenie codziennego życia tych, którzy przeżyli. Poza tym skłócanie ludzi między sobą, stopniowe ograniczanie ich wolności, zarobków... Ot standard w świecie wielkiej polityki.

Trudno powiedzieć mi coś więcej na ten temat. W sensie pewnie, mógłbym spróbować, ale byłoby to bez sensu. Jeżeli macie więcej niż 30 lat, sami widzieliście przynajmniej część z tych rzeczy, jak nie w TV, to w internecie. Tam też znajdziecie znacznie lepsze materiały, które wyjaśnią to nieporównywalnie lepiej ode mnie. Szkoda, że film tego nie zrobił. Po seansie odbyłem rozmowę z kolegą. Wg nas wynika to z tego powodu, że producenci nie chcieli dzielić go na dwie części z uwagi na zwiększenie budżetu albo mniejszą popularność drugiej części. Szkoda, bo przez to doszło do różnych cięć oraz wciśnięcia jak najwięcej wydarzeń i wątków, przez co seans jest męczący, nawet jeśli wiecie, co obserwujecie w danej chwili na ekranie.

Jeśli chodzi o aktorstwo, główną gwiazdą tego filmu jest Christian Bale. Miesiąc temu zobaczyłem po raz 1 w życiu American Psycho. Nie porównam tych ról, bo różnią się, ale w obu Christian świetnie poradził sobie w pokazaniu intrygującej osobowości. Vice przez długi czas pokazuje nam Dicka jako typowego kutasa, który nie liczy się z innymi ludźmi i zależy mu wyłącznie na władzy (wybaczcie, nie mogłem się powstrzymać od tego dziecięcego żartu). Kieruje nim tak skrajny cynizm, że cynicy których postrzegamy jako złych, nie są aż tak zepsuci. Jakie było moje zdziwienie, gdy okazało się, że ten mężczyzna ma swoje miękkie podbrzusze. Jest ono tak wrażliwe, że dla szczęścia jednej osoby, jest gotów porzucić część swoich ambicji. Widać, że aktor przygotował się do roli. Wszystkie gesty, charakterystyczne miny, odpowiednie akcentowanie wulgaryzmów i ten świetny makijaż! Film absolutnie zasłużył na Oscara w 2019 za fryzurę i charakteryzację, a Bale na Złotego Globa za najlepszą rolę. Tak teraz myślę, że gdyby nie on, pewnie porzuciłbym ten film w połowie.

Mimo, że występują tam też aktorzy i aktorki, które lubię (Amy Adams, Jesse Plemons i Sam Rockwell), to nie zrobili na mnie dużego wrażenia. Nie wiem, czy to zasługa reżysera, ale poza Christianem Bale'm, nikt nie zrobił na mnie wrażenia. Nawet Amy Adams, która wcieliła się w żonę tytułowego Vice. Początek dawał pewne nadzieje - lubię wątek typu "za sukcesem każdego mężczyzny stoi silna kobieta", czy raczej bliższą stanowi rzeczywistemu: "Mężczyzna jest głową rodziny, a kobieta jest szyją." Ostatecznie nic z tego nie wynikło. Killers of the Flower Moon, serial Yellowstone, Lioness lub kilka innych przedstawiły ten pomysł znacznie lepiej. Tutaj potencjał wyczerpał się moim zdaniem na samym początku.

Reasumując, ocena tej produkcji sprawia mi pewną trudność. Podobał mi się, ale lubię czarny humor, politykę i nawet jeśli czegoś kompletnie nie rozumiem, to mogę to sobie jakoś połączyć z innymi faktami lub wyjaśnić na inne sposoby. Gdyby nie moje hobby, film po 1 połowie byłby dla mnie bełkotliwy. Druga połowa idzie zbyt szybko, a reżyser obrzuca nas faktami, relacjami z postaciami i innymi "istotnymi rzeczami", które dopychał nie nogą, a dwoma kolanami. Mając napięte uda, jakby ćwiczył nogi i plecy na atlasie z dużym obciążeniem. Nic go nie ratuje, sprawnie napisany scenariusz, aktorzy, reżyseria. Nie jest to zupełna porażka, ale na pewno zmarnowany potencjał. Na szczęście im dalej jestem od premiery, tym mniej mi to przeszkadza. Ode mnie 6.5/10. Poprawnie zrobiony film z kilkoma zaletami, który mógł być o wiele lepszy, ale reżyserowi i producentom zabrakło motywacji.
