This film is a prequel to the animated series, set in a time when humans and dragons were at war. La mayoría de los personajes de acción en vivo son muy similares, incluyendo al protagonista Hipo Horrendo Haddock III (interpretado por Mason Thames). Característica similar entre la serie animada y de la película de Scooby Doo.

Esta película es una precuela de la serie animada, ambientada en una época en que los humanos y dragones eran enemigos, estando en guerra.
