I lost track of this but I was reminded today that now all of the canon of Sherlock Holmes is free to use. Under U.S. copyright law on January 1, 2023 the last remaining copyrighted work in the canon written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle on the Sherlock Holmes character lapsed into the public domain.

That's great for Sherlockians but what about me? The 56 short stories and four novels in the canon are public domain but all the other depictions of the characters published after 1927 are still copyrighted. You know what I am talking about. The best portrayal of Professor James Moriarty there has ever been by Daniel Davis. It will be decades until the Star Trek: TNG episodes "Elementary, Dear Data" and "Ship in a Bottle" will also be public domain.

I am not going to go into the reasons why I haven't been following the Star Trek franchise as much over the last few years. What I will state is that improvements need to be made by Paramount and this is where it can start. Paramount shouldn't just make references to Moriarty in one of their newest series. Now that the Sherlock canon is completely public domain Professor Moriarty should be released from the Matrix...I mean external memory cube and fulfill his holographic destiny of matching wits with his Victorian intellectual rival. How long would it take for Sherlock to deduce the existence of Section 31? There is so much potential in extending the Professor Moriarty arc.
