[Movie] Review: The Devil Wears Prada 2

Why are sequels almost never better? They always end up disappointing you. In the world of cinema, this is inevitable; some people are satisfied, others are totally disappointed; it’s hard to please everyone.

I’d seen a few trailers for this movie, and the sequel didn’t look as interesting as the first one; however, I was still curious to see it so I could form my own opinion. I’ll tell you that I only finished watching it so I could write this review—I was dying of boredom.

The Devil Wears Prada, Part 2—if you saw the first part, you know that this movie is based on the fashion industry and how everything is run from a famous magazine, led by an eccentric woman, the famous Miranda Presley (Meryl Streep), along with her assistants, but in this second installment, we’ll see the same characters, refreshed and changed, some with a new direction in their careers, as was the case with Andy (Anne Hathaway), Miranda’s former assistant, and her other assistant, Emily (Emily Blunt).

We clearly remember that in the first version, the main character was Andy, a disheveled woman who had no idea about fashion or dressing well, but who, over time, learned and improved. This helped her launch her career as a journalist. In this second installment, she remains the center of attention—now a bit more mature, with greater knowledge of the fashion world, and focused on her career as a journalist—except that in this case, she’ll be writing articles obviously related to fashion.

With the help of her loyal friend Nigel (Stanley Tucci), Andy will go back to working with Miranda—no longer as her assistant, but as a consultant for the magazine’s advertising department. This is really interesting; it’s a great job—you get paid to write, give your opinion on certain topics, and, as a bonus, travel to attend fashion shows. It’s not much different from the first version; everything’s going well—so far.

However, I remember that in the first part of this movie there was a little more spark, a certain charm to the characters. In this second version, as I said, they seemed more mature—too serious for my taste. I didn’t really understand what the plot was about in this part—what the point was. Was it to show us a Miranda who had fallen from grace, who had lost her love for her work? Even though she said it herself, she was tired, and you could tell from her performance—a woman who no longer saw any meaning in her magazine or her job. I don’t know; that was my impression.

While in the first part we saw some darkness in his attitude and his gaze, in this second part, it kind of felt like that was missing—besides the fact that, as I said, the previous version had a story to tell, something to show; in this one, I didn't see it, I didn't fully understand it, only at the end did it start to make some sense, and even then, I felt like something was missing.

Without a doubt, it’s a movie I wouldn’t watch again; I only finished watching it so I could find out the ending and decide whether or not it’s worth it. If you have nothing to do or are having trouble falling asleep, I recommend it; it’ll make you sleepy right away, hehe.

But that’s just my opinion; maybe others do like it—good for them. The important thing is to enjoy what we watch and do.
